Dear Viewers! Your concerns on feeding the dog are much appreciated! We brought enough food for him with us, as we dont allow him to ' hunt' his own. He wouldve survived without it too, as it is natural for canine's to not eat for a while.. But since we make decisions for him, we thought it was best to stick with his home routine and have dogfood there when he wants it! Also, the dog is Super happy to go out exploring with us and loves to be out as much as possible! thanks for watching guys! Smooth Gefixt

These are my thoughts on this video (part 1 and 2) Very refreshing to see a survival video with nothing. Most youtube "survivalists" go camping and call it survival or bushcraft. It was nice to see some truth (failing at fire and being cold the first night) The bugs....people don't seem to realize how they can drive you mad...it was nice to see some truth there as well. You guys remind me of my brother and I the way you just went for it....if you suffer,you suffer and THAT is real!! Well done guys,great video!! Cheers from Canada!!!

Well that's a situational thing, cause they could be walking past where they put the camera anyway so other than bending down to pick it up, no major amounts of wasted energy, also it's more amusing they do what you said only to find that it fell over as they got to where they wanted to be xD, if you were being sarcastic ignore most of this

Haha, these little quotes from these guys are so great to me. Not sure if you've heard of Fandabi Dozi (another survival KZbinr, but he focuses on survival as a 16th century Scottish highlander) but he's got a lot of great little quips too. Like, uh, one was "I'm so highlander I use my sword as a pillow." These sorta things are just so...I don't know! I like to think that our ancestors really did have little jokes like this from time to time. Sorry for the long-winded comment, just so excited by this channel and others like it!

I think going on lower amounts of food is just something you have to get used too. It is initially hard going and I do not blame the guy for wanting to pack it in. I think next time, push a bit harder and then more so. They had water and shelter, that's the main thing just a bit of bad luck foraging for some food.

yeah i also believe that it is some kind of practice to have some days without food or with only little amount of food, and i am sure that there still would ve been some food around you.. so yeah, i would also like if you just watched for it more carefully the next time, however i also understand the decision to go back home and plan for the future, for example by going on studying edible plants or such knowledge

Real survival is no joke and can be very very tough. Y'all are cute but if you do not get enough calories and water to survive in the first day or two you are pretty much dead. I would challenge you to be a vegan and live off cattails for a week and see how that goes. Veganism is just crazy to me because inherently by Nature humans are carnivores that is why our eyeballs are in the front of our head and we have canines. if you do not survive on protein and fat you will not survive at all because eventually you will break down and your body will not be able to use what you are putting into it. you are a very trim man but you don't look that healthy to me just an observation. Our ancestors survived on a very high protein and fat diet for Millennia and now we think that we can sustain ourselves on bunny food... WTF... Feed that beautiful dog of yours carrots for about 35 days and see what happens to him or her. Not good. if you really want to get serious about survival you will stop the whole vegan shit because that is not how humans are built.. it's just science bro. but great video anyhow you guys are cool and I like the fact that you have the balls to go out and try stuff like this good for you.

@ 11:08 -- Walking for 2 Hours & you found nothing to eat . -- Actually , you walked over Tons of food without realizing it . No matter where you are in the world , ALL Grasses are edible , either raw or cooked . Young shoots of Grass are best , plus you can eat the roots . Older Grass , after it's gone to Seed ; gather the Seed (lots & lots of Seeds) , grind it , and make Grass Seed Flour , use the Flour to make crude Bread patties .

This is a great life for the dog. Even if they didn't bring food, a dog can go without food for 72 hours easily with no real issues (so can humans although we might have a harder time). I like hiking through nature with my dog too but I've never camped or went on a survival trip with him. It's definitely on my list though as I'm sure he would absolutely love it! @Stevie. Good to read that you mention those other guys by their name, being Dutch Bushcraft Knives, and not mistake them for me ;) When they began their channel I did send them a friendly message telling them that the name Dutch Bushcraft was taken and could cause confusion. And it did. They did not want to change it. I guess they have pretty big ego's being from rich parents and living in the backyard but also never leaving it. And they also never review a Dutch Bushcraft Knive also, what I would expect if that is the name. And there are Dutch knifemakers making bushcraft knives, but I guess they watch or check youtube also and might not want to be a part of this editing stuff with no real testing let alone testing out of their comfort zone, being their backyard, where mom probably bring them milk and cookies :) I give them credit for being good at editing, but that's all. Now these guys from Smooth Gefixt did not only came up with a unique name but are out there where it counts, in the bush. I can hear they are from Holland because I am and recognize the 'accent'. I do not care that they did not finish or one of them is vegan. The vegan guy did eat fish bcs he was honest about needing some food and protein. Showing that you can not be picky when living of the land. The other guy tapped out and they did film it and even decided to show us. They could have gone home, have a shower and good food and return and than edit claiming they finished. They choose to stay honest. Kudo's. I do like these guys. Asd the founder of the Bushcraft Associations I would hire them in a heartbeat. NOT the DBK guys bcs I don't want to bring nappies on the trips ;)

Dutch Bushcraft You seem to have jealousy problem. You dont own that name. If you were a real man,you would just back up,there is no need to argue over that. Relax,stay cool and hone survival skills,because that shit will matter when you get eyes in eyes with nature. In the woods,it doesnt matter if you are a millionaire or homeless,either you eat or you get eaten.
@StevanOutdoor
@StevanOutdoor 7 жыл бұрын
+CME In fact I do own that name as a business name. That's how it works in the Netherlands. I have been around using that name as a business name for a long time and have the proof. Just adding 'knives' to a name but being in the same line of business is actually enough for me to go to court and sue their ass and force them to change their name. I did not but I did send them a nice message that the name they are using is already taken and asked them to change their name. They refused. I can still take them to court and make them. I now also have the proof that the names are conflicting by people referring to me as (part of) DBK so I have the proof that it is a conflict in names and confusing for people. It would be more fun now bcs than they can throw all their t-shirts and other merchandise in the garbage and they can not say I never gave them a warning ;) I gave them a warning as soon as they started using that name. I'm not that kind of person though or at least not yet. But I don't like being mistaken for some adolescent guys living with mommy and daddy that make video's in their backyard and were born way after I started teaching bushcraft and survival. Let me give you an example because you seem rather stupid. If they would have been calling their channel Pathfinder Knives. Dave Canterbury would have sued their ass immediately. And they would have lost making video's in English bcs of the conflict. I'm not a jealous guy but when it starts interfering with my business I just might take them to court and sue them for a lot of money illegally using my business name. Now take Smooth Gefixt. They have a great channel and did come up with a new name that does not conflict with any other name. They have my full support. In fact I have already recommended their channel to others. Cool guys with a new name making great video's. So you might have just convinced me to take them to court and make them change the name DBK ;) I sure am not gonna take advice from a guy (I think) with 9 subscribers and 4 video's he did not even make himself. :)
@lazar2175
@lazar2175 7 жыл бұрын
Dutch Bushcraft Then go ahead and sue them. Be a fucking wimp. They don't have to change that name under any circumstances. Imagine if i registered company under the name of "Official","Gaming" or similar. Could i sue everyone for having that in my name. Also,i don't encourage what DBK did,and i don't actually watch them. Also,if you judge me by my channel,go ahead. I don't mind getting insulted.

Next time try leaving the scales on. Works out a lot better for cooking fish over a fire (obviously you don't eat the scales). Also, good idea leaving the heads on. Helps keep the juices from running out and drying out the fish. And like you said, you might just find a extra bite ; ) Great job guys!

You made the right call. Many viewers may miss the point, but the premise was to "Simulate" and "Practice" a survival situation where you only have one tool, not "Create" a survival situation through inappropriate actions. In the 24 hour videos, Julius did a fine job on showing that even a simple change in weather can make everything go from unfortunate to dangerous very quickly. Sleeping on bare earth without a fire can be very cold, and has the ability to lower your core temperature to dangerous levels. Many people do not understand that. It is important to "Practice", but the first rule of survival is don't force yourself into survival situations. If your not feeling confident, back out. You had a 72 hour target, and missed it. I don't see this as a big deal. the best Olympic Athletes generally target the World Record and rarely ever achieve it. That does not make them bad athletes. They are still among the best in the world. The man that lives another day, get's another day to try. I'm certain you both learned a lot more than can be provided through the video, and I can't wait to see your next attempt. I would suggest covering this topic in a future video. Judging by other comments, there is obviously a lot of viewers that don't understand, and possibly less skilled individuals that may try to mimic what they see on youtube. These individuals could be putting themselves in serious danger. You are now in a position where you can help them by providing proper context and education. Much of the education your channel provides is subtle, but obviously there is a large amount of viewers that need it spelled out and driven home. Speaking of subtle, when I heard the story of Jager is it, "the Survival Dog", my first thought was, "From abandoned, to living the golden life that every dog dreams of." It is obvious that he is happy, healthy, and dedicated. He shows no signs of mistreatment or excessive hunger. I understand people being concerned about the well being of pets, but yours is obviously living the good life. It's unfortunate that such an educational video has boiled down to "Do you feed your dog?" comments, but I'm certain this will also be well covered in a future video. Cheers to all three.

Thank You Ryan Drake, for commenting, and taking the time to express yourself! The challange was indeed to test and train ourselves! we could have continued to finish the 72h. this would have ment staying the rest of the afternoon and night. doable for sure but it wouldnt have added anything to our survival skills, except feeling extra hungry and breaking down our bodies (that dont have alot of reserves anyway, lol) so for me it wasnt worth it.. credits to Julius who wanted to stay! We didnt start this channel to show ourselves as survival experts, but more like a way to document ourselves along the way of learning and trying new things. So for sure you will see more, and hopefully, better video's in the future.. not sure about proper context and education tho, id rather do my own thing and let people ask me questions about it. Coming up: 20min video of Jager eating... :) Thanks for watching! and looking forward to seeing you comment on the next vids! :) Take care, Dylan

Exactly as I thought. I really like how you both find the time to respond to your viewers as well, much of the context and education you provide can be found there. Too many people don't even bother to watch an entire video, let alone search for the relevant comments. 20 mins of Jager eating, that made me laugh. It's not often you find a youtube comment that makes you laugh, but like striking gold when it happens. Fantastic work.

Great video but I've done a 7 day fast with no food before and worked almost 40 hours in the week without ever feeling the need to collapse or like it was too much to go without it. Next time practice intermittent fasting before you do a trip like this and you will be surprised you can run the full 72 hours without one bite to eat. Yes you might be more tired than normal obviously but by day four or five your body comes accustomed to running on ketones your stomach growls less and you become almost not even hungry.

Cracking video guys, shame you didn't make it but hey that's how it goes and that's the whole,idea and why it is called a "challenge" But did you feed the dog........only joking 😉some people really need to read other comments and descriptions. I have two dogs and even if I feed them 24/7 they would still look like they where starving as soon as food was on show. Keep on with the great content, ignore the naysayers, at least you guys are out there trying and not doing bushcraft from a armchair 👍🏼 Still sat here scratching my face from part one and the evil swarms of midges nothing worse than been near a water source this time of year, try using a product called "skin so soft" makes you smell a little girly but the little buggers hate the stuff

I’d like to say that I’m very pleased to see two men around 25 years of age that are out and exploring survival skills, that’s just awesome and I subscribed to your channel because I like what you you’re doing but when I heard that one of you didn’t eat to stay one more night, I was stunned! You are not fit for survival. The Vegan is very positive minded which is a crucial part of surviving. One have to stay positive and think god thoughts, if you have problems, solve them, don’t dwell on them and one more night is about 12-16 hours (you’re sleeping the rest of the time. I’ll be soooo disappointed if you leave after two days, that’s really not a struggle and I will not watch anymore of your survival clips if you give up, the reason for that is that you will not survive when it’s a REAL survival mode. Good luck and God bless you! I hope you stay, I enjoy your videos a lot so far. Stay please(?) You’ll make it and it’s en experience few will go through, are you willing to throw that ability away? You’ve worked hard for fire, shelter and food, you’re doing good and now one of you want to quit because he’s hungry or whatever. That’s actually rude to those who’ve been in a real survival situation between life and death and some didn’t make it. Stay for those who didn’t make it, share your thoughts and ideas, you’re actually helping people with your videos. Thank you!

See both points of view. Its very interesting what the lack of food can do not only to the human body in energy levels but the human mind in thought process and whether or not to take a certain risk or retreat to comfort. Hats off to both of you, I'd be lucky to make it 24 hours in that mind set, well done!!

@SmoothGefixt
@SmoothGefixt 7 жыл бұрын
John Wayne himself! Good Question, I thought about what the best approach would be in terms of food for the dog. Thought it was kinda lame to bring dogfood but no food for ourselves. though we (humans) are making a choice to go out and 'survive' and find our own food of the land, meanwhile we expect dogs to 'behave' and follow us so that means that we dont want him to run off after things, and start killing sheep etc. in farmers fields :p So he cant get his own, and letting him starve isnt really fair either, so i decided to bring the dogfood;) Let me know what you think and thanks for commenting!! Cheers, Dylan

Dylan, dog cannot live on water alone since most dog can't hunt for themself. Bringing a dog along is good for company and moral.
@SmoothGefixt

Im sure he would survive for 72h without food.. i dont want to be the one making that choice for him tho!;) he probbably could hunt his own food too, he is fierce ambitious when he spots a deer in the woods;) in a real survival situation he's not only great for company and moral! but also as a alarm for any potential danger, as his ears/eyes/nose are way sharper than mine. plus he could be a great asset for hunting wild game too. Everybody needs a K9 buddy in my opinion:) Goodluck, Dylan

I believe it's fair to end the trip whenever one of you feels undernourished/exhausted. Survival is not easy and it's a matter of habit, the more you do it, the better you're at it. If you guys try this again later maybe you succeed based on new knowledge, quicker fires, better ways to spot edible envoirements and so on. Progress is fun to see, and we enjoy watching you guys. Getting hungry definitely causes mistakes. Swimming where you fish = no fish. Relying on fish and only fishing 2 hours = no fish. If your’e going to fish on as few of hours as possible, try early morning/dawn and before dusk. Trout typically are more voracious at these times of day. Loved your location! Totally beautiful country. Can’t wait for more!

Good effort gentlemen. After reading through the comments that have already been left, I find it a little scary that sooooo many idiots have commented about the dog not eating despite it clearly stating that the dog had food. I appreciate that you had the integrity to honestly depict the way the trip transpired. Here are my two cents: Overall, you guys did a pretty good job trying to use bushcraft techniques. Thank you for showing how difficult it can be to start a fire with a bow drill (even in "good" conditions). You didn't really discuss it, but the heat reflection wall behind the fire was well done. Also, you gave a great demonstration on how to boil water without a pot. The only real criticism I have is that you didn't feed the dog... I'm just kidding. Seriously, though, someone else had suggested that you leave a couple of fishing lines out throughout the night. That might have helped you catch enough to complete your challenge. At the end of the day survival skills need to be practiced, and practice should be fun. There's nothing wrong with pulling the plug early because you weren't enjoying it anymore. Next time, you'll be armed with this experience and I'm sure you'll have a better plan for feeding yourselves (but not the dog, he needs to learn for himself!). Keep up the good work!
@SmoothGefixt
@SmoothGefixt 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot for taking the time writing this well substantiated supportive comment!:) For the bowdrill we actually used a too thick spindle, although the circumstances also weren't to great since it had just stopped raining when we started this challenge and Ireland is actually always damp;) All the best! Way to get out there and learn! I liked the bowl you guys carved out of the log, that's clever. Couple of thoughts: 1. edit the video and put a disclaimer that you had food for the dog (people clearly don't read other comments). 2. make your your bow drill spindle a good bit thinner (about thumb size) and you should have an easier time getting an ember.

Native Americans, at least those in the western part of the U.S., didn't camp near the water (they didn't have mosquito repellant either). They camped a distance away from the water in an area that was open to the wind, which helped keep the bugs away. They also preferred a spot where a lookout could see in different directions for an approaching enemies.

Hi Annette. Not talking about filling your shoppingbasket in the supermarket.;) What i meant by not being able to survive on plants alone, was meant in a wilderness environment (like in the video). i am also talking about long term stay's... we had a hard time finding enough plants for the 2.5 days. for sure if you know a plant rich area it would be better/easier... but it would still be very dependent on the season... the calories of plants do not come close to those of animal meats..... meat has around 140kcal per 100g and for example cattail roots have 25kcal per 100g. Kind regards, Dylan

It seemed a lot of energy went toward getting to shelter and camp where even firewood was a chore to find. Bow drilling for fire might be one's last resort when a simple lighter, or firestarting rod would be a light carry, unless you really just wanted to prove you could start a fire with the bowdrill. Lucky that you didn't get rained upon. It can get uncomfortable really fast when nature plays a rough hand, when bugs, heat, cold or severe weather show out of the blue. The cinematography was great to prove how uncomfortable it all was. In a survival situation one does not simply give up and go home unless one gets rescued. Even the survivalists on TV shows knew their ticket out was waiting in the wings, but maybe the rescue would not come for them right away because the weather socked the helicopter in. What then? The carved log for water boiling was a neat trick, but golly! That expended a lot of energy to pull off. Setting up shelter, finding food, and making shelter in one day just about ran you both down so far you were worthless the second day! But you got it all done!
