DUP MP Sammy Wilson was interviewed while holidaying in the EU about comments made by the Irish government when it came to the restoration of public services in Northern Ireland. Sammy said a "foreign country" shouldn't be interfering in Northern Ireland and blames Leo Varadkar and his government for the mess Brexit is in...

About 50% of people of Northern Ireland are Irish citizens or identify as Irish. So foreign or not, the Irish government has a right to be concerned about the welfare of their citizens in the North. And am sorry but Northern Ireland is not on Britain, there are British people in Northern Ireland but the day of it being a "protestant country for a protestant people" with a clear cultural British majority is long gone. This is just pathetic!

Though quite a few of those have dual citizenship meaning they identify as both UK and Irish citizens. I agree with the point that the Irish Government is perfectly entitled to offer an opinion on what should happen. I don't think anyone argues Northern Ireland is part of Britain though, just that its part of the UK.

@dorkangel1076 How do you know that "quite a few" of those Irish citizens identity as UK and Irish citizens both? Also technically ALL citizens of NI have dual citizenship as they are entitled to both under the GFA.
@MichaelDoran23
@MichaelDoran23 10 ай бұрын
@cjm3109 I think what he ment was they held both passports. Some only hold 1 passport Irish or UK, but there are alot who holds both. There was a poll done in 2018 asking northern Irish people how they identify and many said both. I am a dual citizen under the GFA, but I would never hold a British passport, that's no because of hatred to Britain, its just I am Irish. However, A good example would be people just trying to go on holidays, if they could get the british passport faster they might do that but still identify as Irish, they just wanted to go on holidays. Many people done this during covid and brexit because the Irish passport office was overwhelmed.
@Gillemear
@Gillemear 10 ай бұрын
@cjm3109 I know due to the 2021 census records. And yes, technically that's true but ardent Unionist or Nationalist would never identify as Irish or British respectively. Besides, it just reinforces my point- the Irish government has as much a say in the welfare of the people of NI as the British government has for citizens in Ireland.

The problem for Northern Ireland IS the DUP and their supporters. Henry Joy who was executed for his part in the Rebellion was a Presbyterian (Protestant) . something happened on the way to cause many like the present day Sammy Wilson and his crew to be going on with such absurdities more than likely the influence of the Orange Order which has continued to be the most divisive Protestant sectarian organisation in the UK..i

If Ireland is a foreign country, how come the British government meet the Irish government to discuss issues concerning N.I. Whether Sammy likes it or not, the Irish government has skin in the game. @jmo8934
@jmo8934 10 ай бұрын
He’s delusional. The island of Ireland has been the same country all the way until 1922. People there can have citizenship of Ireland, Britain or both as they see fit. NI was as we all know gerrymandered to ensure a Protestant majority forever. That is gone. Sammys party campaigned for Brexit and the majority of people in NI voted against it. Once implemented the way they wanted Brexit meant checks had to go somewhere. Guess where that had to be? Bojo signed a deal with the EU. Nobody in Britain cares about NI and the DUP in that context are non entities. Sammy thinks that people there actually care what he or his party or headbanger followers think. Britain are counting down the days to be rid of it which is why the provision exists for a poll that can cut it loose. Sammy and his followers are the type of people posing with Trump banner, talking about climate change as no big deal, and bringing evangelical Christian stuff into everything. They are mental cases and as soon as the likes of him shuffle of the better.

Sammy Wilson can say it's foreign if he wants but that won't change the fact that Irish people live in all nine counties of Ulster, always have done. He doesn't get to decide that splitting a province with a border drawn up by a committee 100yrs ago that literally cuts some people's gardens from their houses makes the people "foreign" to each other. An English person is more foreign to Ireland than any Irish people from any part of their own country will ever be no matter what county they are born in. Sammy doesn't like that the placenames are Irish eg. Tyrone: Tír Eoghain (Eoin's land) and that Ireland's patron saint is buried in Downpatrick, and he celebrates the Battle of the Boyne (now in the Republic) every year

I don't think he is afraid of the Mé Féin..... Sorry..... I meant the Dole to Dáil party..... FcUKing it up. If Sinn Féin wants a United Ireland, the Party needs to promote a United Ireland by staying well clear of anything that will tarnish the image of a United Ireland in the eyes of people in the North, let Paul Murphy rant about the Housing Crisis & Neutrality, they can agree with him but drop it like a debate about organised crime donations to Political Parties.

Reunification* Ireland was united in many ways before the Norman/Anglo invasion of the 1100s and united linguistically, lawfully, culturally and socially right up to the 1700s before British rule took hold. Ireland was actually more unified in the 17th century than Britain is in 2023. 1. Ireland was united before the coming of the Brits/Normans in 1169 as we had one law for the whole island i.e. *Brehon Law* This particular law was in place for 1000 years and was first set down on parchment in the 7th century. This law was operational in Ireland even until the completion of the English conquest of Ireland in the early 17th century. Brehon Law is seen today as very advanced for that time. Brehon Law is hugely important and not to be overlooked as insignificant. *Brehon Law was very advanced for that era and was even in use right up until the 17th century before the Brits took hold* 2. The whole island was *united linguistically as we all spoke Old Irish* The Irish language is around since the Bronze Age and is about 2,500 years old. We all shared the Irish language so were linguistically entwined. 3. *We were united both culturally and socially, too all the while operating under one law and conversing in Irish* One's culture is based firmly around many different parts of everyday life and pre-Norman invasion, Gaelic Irish style of dress, music, dance, sport, social gathering, architecture, and art was nationwide. 4. We had unity albeit political unity, but where and when, even today, has politics ever been united!? Are the folks in Westminster united? Are the folks in the Dáil Éireann united? I think not. Conclusion: The truth is the British invasion destroyed our laws and language therefore creating division - the invasion tried to divide the people and successfully partitioned the island. Ireland was united in many ways before the British arrived and will be reunified when Britain leaves.

Do you think we fought British rule for centuries for the laugh of it or something? When people fight, they fight for a good reason and when a nation fights it's because something was taken away from them! After the Norman/Anglo Invasion of Ireland in the 1100s, we then had Planters arrive as per The Plantations in 16th- and 17th-century which involved the confiscation of Irish-owned land by the English Crown and the colonisation of land with settlers from Britain. We fought back: 1. The two Desmond Rebellions took place in 1569-1573 and 1579-1583 to *fight against the threat of the extension of the English government* over the province. 2. The successful Battle of Clontibret was *fought against the British* in County Monaghan in 1595. 3. The successful Battle of the Yellow Ford was *fought against the British* in County Armagh in 1598. 4. The Nine Years' War, sometimes called Tyrone's Rebellion took place in Ireland from 1593 to 1603. It was fought between an Irish alliance to *fight against English rule in Ireland.* 5. The Rebellion of 1641 took place when Irish Catholics were being threatened by expansion of the anti-Catholic English Parliament and Scottish Planters and they *rebelled against English and Protestant domination.* 6. The Irish Rebellion of 1798 was a major uprising *against British rule in Ireland.* (The Society of United Irishmen was led primarily by liberal Protestants). The Irish wanted an end to anti-Catholic discrimination, greater Irish self-governance, and to roll back the Plantations of Ireland. 7. The Irish rebellion of 1803 was launched by Irish republicans *against British rule in Ireland* 8. The Young Irelander Rebellion was an Irish nationalist uprising led by the Young Ireland movement, part of the wider Revolutions of 1848. 9. The Fenian Rising of 1867 was a rebellion *against British rule in Ireland*, organised by the Irish Republican Brotherhood. 10. The Easter Rising of 1916 was piloted by Irish republicans *against British rule in Ireland* with the aim of establishing an independent Irish Republic. 11. The civil rights movement in the early 1960s challenged the inequality and discrimination against ethnic Irish Catholics that was perpetrated by the Ulster Protestant community. 12. Derry activists' marched on the 5 October 1968 in Derry, but were attacked by the RUC and loyalists. THAT IS A SNAPSHOT OF HOW WE HAVE FOUGHT AND RESISTED BOTH BRITISH RULE AND DISCRIMINATION BY THE UNIONIST COMMUNITY!

The DUP got played - that's why they are angry. They tagged along to support the Tories (or more accurately, the ERG's) plan of Brexit in a promise that it would harden the border, forcing deeper integration of NI with the Kingdom, thus supporting Unionism. They actually HOPED that it would run into the GFA and would maybe cut into it or even abolish it in the fervor that Brexit caused. But for most people in Ireland and the UK the memory of "the troubles" is way to recent to just trash the GFA, not even with pro-brexit voters. So now the DUP is left in this wierd gap that they can't say that they WANTED the GFA to be a problem, but they also want the GFA to be a problem...
