They wanted the consequences of brexit to be a hard border on the island of Ireland. That was never going to happen but they couldn’t be reasoned with as usual. Now that the inevitable has happened handily coinciding with Sinn Fein taking the first minister role it’s their excuse to stay out of the executive. That can only go on for so long though and it seems like they want to test the strength of their position yet again. It never works out well.

I grew up in Northern Ireland, moved to the U.S. when I was 20. Still watching what’s happening back there. It was an apartheid state for most of it’s existence. Now with the demographics shifting. The DUP types feel threatened & increasingly isolated. Northern Ireland could have a really bright future, if the DUP would just get out of the way & there supporter would stop teaching their children to hate.

The irony is that the status quo of NI would be safer if the DUP's and UUP's voters switched to Alliance. They (Alliance) claim to want what the democratic majority want, but deep down they are a unionist party but want to make NI a safe and prosperous place and for everyone to be equal. Under those circumstances it would be very hard to get 100% of nationalists to vote for reunification in a border poll - better the devil you know etc. For what it's worth, it suits me if the DUP's and UUP's voters continue to be manipulated by their elected representatives and continue to ignore decent people like Alliance - a UI is the outcome if we continue this way.

😊In a democracy the will of the majority prevails. The DUP are being undemocratic in refusing to apply the terms of the Windsor accord. By refusing to take their places in Stormont they are making a mockery of their partys name.
