2012 LML here, 130 thousand. Currently in shop. Out of nowhere lost power, engine stopped running while driving. Thank god not on a highway. It wouldn't start. Towed to dealer. No codes were thrown. Tech thinks its in the fuel system but still investigating. Any input would greatly appreciated. Love the truck but the repairs, not sure they're worth the hassle. Too many way to be left stranded. Which is BS for what we pay for these trucks. Thanks for videos they are great info.

Just a note on the TCM - my brother-in-law has an '07 Duramax that started having the intermittent shift issues. It looked, smelled, and quacked like a failing TCM, so he replaced the TCM. It fixed it for all of one day, then the problem came back. A few days later his son noticed that something looked queer with one of the speed sensors on the transmission. Replacing that speed sensor fixed the shifting problem. Don't forget that with most electronic control systems, you need to check both the sensors and the actuators, as well as the controller and the wiring between everything.

Would disconnecting the battery trip the “lost communication to tcm” code to trip? I recently did a full egr delete and upgrade overhaul and upon first start up it ran fine but scan showed that code. We reset everything and went for a drive, the truck shifts fine, but has a slightly “tight” downshift at times of you press the pedal to overtake someone. After a good drive i scanned it again and the code never came back so idk what tripped it the first time?

Yes it was the idler and belt tension pulley that got me stranded. Tension-er seized up at 70 MPH and you were right Scary. No brakes,or power steering.

Own a 04 LB7 since new ,use Howes fuel conditioner since new 276k on the truck , still running factory injectors , no smoke , no fuel in crank case , always use the best fuel filters every 10k . Great truck

I have had my LLY since May 2013 with 178k miles.....the only major problem was a fuel regulator switch 2 weeks after I bought it. The dealer charged me over a $1000 for the repair. That's the only major problem I've had.....now have 296k miles with just basic maintenance. I love my LLY!!!

@@danielellis2271 I had the same deal , pressure regulator replaced it myself also did the water pump and my egr cooler was plugged up nothing easy to fix but not to bad if you have some ability.

A couple things on the LLY tractor comment. I cant remember the millisecond necessary to trip your engine into the mode where it cancels out 4 cylinders but it is minute. I dont agree with not bracing the wiring harness, on your FICM, by cutting the wire ties. Those wires are small as all get out and need the stability. What I did is cut a rubber hose to the length needed and split it up one side. Put it around the harness and resecure the harness back to the bracket. It wont rub through and reinforces the harness as a whole. Also on the left front side of the engine, on #2 cylinder, there is a wire that runs down the front of your engine that is connected to your injector wiring harness. That wire is not secure and stresses your #2 injector plug. Stabilize that wire with a wire tie so it doesnt allow it to rattle the harness when going over bumps. If #2 detects that lost contact it will cancel out #2, 8, 3, and 5. If #7 detects lost contact it will cancel #1, 7, 4, and 6. Either will give you the tractor effect. On #2 and #7 I took a plastic tooth pic, the flat part, wedged them into the connectors on the back side in the plug, cut them off flush, and tightened the fit of the contact. Have not had that problem again for over 200k now and I didnt have to cut the harness to fix it.

I'm not a mechanic but speaking from experience on my Duramax and had this issue time and time again. FIRST place I would check is this..check the fuel filter/head assembly. For some reason mine seems to collect contaminants and foul up the filter/head assembly. Remove the fuel filter. If that is the issue you will certainly see all the buildup on it and know it needs cleaning.

From watching this video, looks like im going to do a little bit of insurance shopping with this Ryan's shop just to have in the glove or tool box. Such as getting a spare TCM, and replacing the idler pulleys etc. Great video. Seems like the LBZ dodged a lot of the problems mentioned here, although we are not immortal 100%. But its encouraging no less.

I have a 02 with 298,000 on it an 3/4 of them miles are towing a 32' gooseneck, injectors, front end rebuild, rear axle seals an now a new key switch ignition, an another set of infectors, only things done, more fuel, air, tuned has been a good truck.i bought with 20,000 on it. Always carry a spare belt an one or two idler pulley in the tool box

I bought one of these a few months ago. My TCM failed today idling in a parking lot. Was able to get home going about 40mph. No highway so that was good. I'll change it out tomorrow. No down time!! Thanks guys!

Test drove a 2009 GMC Duramax the other day with only 70,000 miles on it and previous owner only used for towing 5th wheel. First time I got on it check engine light came on and transmission was stuck in seemed like 3rdish gear. Dealer called next day and said low battery caused the issue. Ever heard of this?

I have got to add a commentary if Ryan isn’t a chip off the block I don’t know what. You can tell this young man has spent some time in his dad’s shadow and has definitely learned a thing or three. It’s great to see a young man who has some of his old mans style. Me and my brothers used to break balls by saying “Oh, you’re just like dad!” We smile at each other now and say thank you because we had a great dad. I know they drive us crazy when we’re teenagers I mean who’s dad didn’t come off with a “don’t make me put a foot in your ass or I’m looking for a place to park my foot and your ass is looking pretty good!” but they are doing everything because they love us. Great video guys! I would definitely like an LMM specific video on Fuel Pressure issues and Limp Mode. I have almost a million Kilometers on my 2007.5 stock and only started having problems recently. Got rid of the old exhaust and put just pipe and muffler on. Runs much better now but still goes into Limp Mode a lot due to Low Fuel Rail Pressure.

Put a lift pump on it like FASS or AirDog. It’s leaking air into the head unit of the factory fuel filter primer pump. The gaskets get old and leak air and drop fuel rail pressure and put it into limp mode. Replace those gaskets also.

I’m expecting delivery of a new Chevrolet 3500 High Country L5P powered dually next month that I ordered in March and a dual remote oil bypass system from Amsoil first thing and then figure out what the best route of tuning/deleting to go but look forward to the journey and getting all the knowledge I can gain in the process!!!! I got an alarm on DEF. My shop replaced a sensor upstream of the regen box because it was wasting diesel. It would not reset the panel. Turns out the outlet sensor was slow to react and had to be replaced to allow the panel to reset. Took my shop almost 2 weeks to hunt this issue down.

Gonna be on the road so will take off with all sorts of preventive items. ...some of the stuff in your description that was used on the truck Mods. ...and tools, spare parts, rescue stuff, name it. TCM definitely. Was going to get the GM TECH 2, but now I have seen this video, I am holding off. I am new at this shtuff, thankful to get any information to consolidate my understanding. ...aware of the CP4 Achilles' heel! ...and the fuel pre-filter issues, and how bad fuel can destroy a DURAMAX! My 2011 6.6 LGH Express 4500 (Cutaway minibus) is not roadworthy. LGH is the fuel friendly 'detuned' DML - 260hp instead of 365hp 160K runs well, cranks instantly (when it cranks)... has intermittent black-outs - coast and park on roadside a couple of minutes and it cranks again... that's dangerous and needs to be fixed. The [ short nose/van dog house setup ] is murder on accessing anything without taking apart the house(roof, walls and foundation) to reach anything. ...and a lot of this stuff requires new fasteners since they don't survive dismantling!!! I am definitely contemplating turning the front-end into a removable GLAVAL-like reverse hood/fenders style, so the engine can be accessed freely! REGEN: One thing about the manual regen tools (CTS 2-3) I do not like is that the engine is made to run at high rpm while standing(no load on the engine); I think is a bad idea. I once had a magnificent Pontiac Bonneville, that was used but could be placed on a dealers lot and sold as new, 55K miles. I made the mistake of over-caring for it and let a shop run the-horrible-giant-stinking-cloud-loud-as-smitten-engine-racing-as-if-is-going-to-blow-up-process, trusting the procedure is ok, as it is recommended periodically... within 6 months the engine blew up... a perfect car I had driven for years with ZERO problems! not even a light bulb... yeah! 'pissed' does not come close! I say much better to do this under load, vehicle on an express-way with little traffic! SCANNERs: OEMtools - Connected Automotive Systems carries a scanner that is laptop based(WIN10) oemtools.com/about-us/ Is it overkill, will the tools in this video suffice? I am wondering how that compares to the scanners mentioned in the video? Anyone ? who might have info on, knowledge on that? CTS original no good!? CTS 2 and 3 good for regen... I would never do under no-load. Edge does that see all issues in all modules? Is it bidirectional besides resetting codes? ...good to clear the limp code, as temporary rescue. Hmmm! If the Edge ends up costing an arm and a leg, why not get a Thinktool Pro S and have it all? ...or the OEMTools solution?

I own 2 Duramaxes, 1 is a 04 with over 260,000 miles zero engine/gear issues, the other is a 15 with 120,000 miles, installed lift pump, converted CP4 to CP3, had exhaust issues twice, problem fixed now, no more issues.

My son and I each have ‘03 LB7s in mid-200K’s. I did fuel injectors and lift pumps on both (tough work, but I’m not a mechanic and I got it done) and they’re both strong trucks. Yes, old diesels need maintenance, but few gas trucks will last this long at all, and the LB7s get great fuel economy compared to gas. If you don’t want to but a new truck every 10-15 years, diesel is king.

We have a 2011 Chevy Silverado HD 2500 which I believe is the 6.6 LML engine. My understanding is this is the first year of the LML series. We are the original owners and the truck is very well maintained and has less than 40K miles. We use the truck for hauling a gooseneck horse trailer and now going to begin pulling a fifth wheel RV. Give the age of the truck, and what is now know of the vulnerability of some components as well as aftermarket systems (pumps, filters etc.) that can improve reliability and performance, what would be a list of items I should or could have done. Don’t want to be stranded, and would like highest possible reliability and performance. Love your videos, if I were in Wisconsin, I would be pulling into your shop! I would appreciate your input! I've got a low mileage 67k 2015 LML Duramax. Have went into reduced power mode twice towing heavy with no warning. First time was a bad DEF temp sensor at 45k and second time was 9th injector failure at 65k. I was able to clear the code a couple times each and drive to my destination. However both times were freeways speeds on grades with traffic. The pucker factor is huge when you hear a ding, get a reduce power message and go from 70 mph to 20 mph right now.

I love the Duramax talk especially about the older models in 2005 she been talking about the 2006 is and 2010s I'm looking at buying me one so I need to know as much information that I can possibly get cuz I own it a Ford and they kept on breaking down the 6.0 the 6.2 the 6.4 stayed in the shop so I'm looking at a GMC instead of buying a new model 2020 I rather work with a older model and do majority work myself instead of being in the shop all the time and upgrade that engine like I want to so I appreciate everything you talking about continue to do what you do doing a wonderful and amazing job

Talking about the TCM fault mine was when I went to go crank my truck and it wouldn’t fire just crank over. Had a crank sensor fault and and TCM fault. Come to find out my crank sensor and MAF sensor was shorting out the system. Had both replaced and no more issues.

I have a 2013 LML. It has a mini max and deleted with 4 inch exhaust. When I first bought it it would run like a scalded dog in performance mode (like spin the tires at 60mph when punched kind of fast) I have since added an air dog 65gph lift pump, egt and tranny temp gauge and exergy fuel system saver and have now noticed it doesn’t “seem” or sound as fast, it still runs fine as a daily driver though and for towing but won’t spin the tires at all (I did put new tires on though so that may be part of it) . It Also it used to make a loud hiss as it cycled the turbo during start up that now doesn’t do it as loud at all. I am leaning towards either time for a new air filter (or has the AFE power air filter) or maybe some metal shavings got into the turbo when I drilled the exhaust for the egt probe...or it’s the fuel saver (I’ve heard others say they removed them because it robbed power). Anyway, what are your thoughts on this? Thank you in advance.

Here is another tip on Duramax cooling systems. You are dealing with a lot of aluminum in the system. Its highly susceptible to corrosion. You want your coolant to have a neutral PH. Most tap water water is acidic. Distilled is the best. First off get rid of that red coolant!! That garbage clogs things up. Second, after switching to green, put in 2 bottles of Napa Cool 4056. It will stabilize your coolant PH. I have taken out water pumps and not had to change the housing because there was no corrosion on systems that were neutral. You can check your PH with a guage or litmus paper that you can pick up at any plant store.

Ha, and here I thought you would just talk about DEF, which I already understood. I envy you truck guys who really know your stuff!! With my super sensitive nose I can smell something sweet in my engine near the driver's side near the tire well but coming from the engine. So now I've learned that I need to check if the coolant is leaking a bit. I'm hoping it's a minuscule leak or just normal burn off for the first 1,000 miles it is being driven? I'd been foolishly hoping it might be a brake pad that was new and burning off residue, but coolant seems to hit 100% on a google search. I'll be towing my family & our 9k lbs. travel trailer next week over 8-10 high western US mountain passes, and in our 100 degrees summer heat am hoping everything is ok with my new truck. On the dash I can scroll through all my current engine stats and nothing stands out at all, including all engine temps & brakes. Still, I'll try to get some time to check my coolant level manually just to keep an eye on if it starts going down at all. This truck hasn't been driven 1,000 miles yet. My truck is a brand new 2022 GMC 3500 Sierra Duramax, it is a 4WD AT4 single rear axle, here are my engine"s specs (taken from GMC's site): 6.6L Duramax Turbo-Diesel V8 engine 445 hp [332 kW] @ 2800 rpm 910 b-ft. of torque [1220 Nm] @ 1600 rpm 3.42 rear axle ratio Allison® 10-speed automatic transmission Can anyone tell me which of the things in your video would apply for my vehicle? I hear you speaking about a "5" or "L5" and other engine models or something, but have no idea where mine fits into that so I can get my feet under me and follow along here. Love this type of video, I have a 02 lb7 with 192000 on it . It still runs good but I'm getting nervous. I've owned it 8 years and never had one issue so I know something is coming. Its completely stalk other than a 2 in suspension lift.

I'm at 210k injectors and upgrades!!! Rebuilding the front suspension, it wasnt sloppy but is 2002 with 210k on it lol. No problems here!!!

Oem fuel filter housing issues. I went through it and ended up adding an LP. Best product I’ve bought for my truck aside from my insite.

Have a lly dually, pressure release valve was releasing at 13000psi causing limp mode. Truck is stock. Replaced fuel pressure regulator and replaced fpr valve with stock piece. Still got limp mode. Now replaced fpr valve with blank plug. No more limp mode. Discovered that injector pump has built in release for over pressure so a second fpr valve not needed. This only works for stock built engines not modified engines. Truck now runs like new.

I put my truck in drive and the service sabilitrack service tracks on control popped on. Low and behold it was a TCM. That was a 13. Now my new 11 has service sabilitrack service trailer brake system.

I’ve had issues with that last year. I hope that wasn’t a warning. What happened to me was I had the wheel well cover off and I drove it 20 miles and got caught in monsoon. I wound up soaking my fuse box.

Man, I love my 07 which hasn't had any engine issues. Seems the lmm is a good design??? I watch these vids and all these other design designation name engines have all sorts of problems. Are these problems from abuse or poor design. I'm at 255k and still performing super well. Good video here.

I had a 98 6.5 for 11 years. No engine or transmission problems. Bought an 01 lb7. Needed new injectors 3 mo later. Truck was under 140k miles.

I work at an indy shop, we don't see too many newer duramaxs but when we do it's nearly always dpf related.. we have a few farmers that let them idle a lot and are not on the highway much like you guys were taking about, these trucks don't like it. I've done a few def tank heaters, couple def injectors, and some egt/nox sensors as well. One of our customers has a 2015 and it's in the shop about every 6 to 9 months because it just won't regen.

I did a cp4 repair under warranty and we had 10k in parts under warranty. Just got rid of mine and it was like a weight lifted off my shoulders. lol

@@jredd801 This was my first 6.0. I've literally had zero problems with it in this first 5 years. I still have an old '93 Chevy 2500 with the 6.5 turbo diesel. But it's a manual trans, mechanical injection pump, zero emissions regulations..the way they should be! 375,000 + miles

I have a 2005 Duramax LLY, I remember because it reminds me of “Lilly”… I have 206,000 miles pulling a 10k lb 5th wheel trailer and now I’m having issues overheating while climbing hills in hot weather. I had to pull over every 35 miles as my engine overheated and low cool warnings came on. I drove 150 miles adding about 10-12 gallons of coolant sometimes after only 5 miles. I made it home but realized I blew a head gasket which I’m not looking forward to paying for the repairs. Just FYI. Time for a new truck I think.

LML Duramax, deleted and tuned thought had ECM/PCM issue, no comms with OBD scanner at times/ stabilitrak, traction control on dash and no crank. Was almost certain ECM was bricked and was going to replace when I took off driver side wheel well and just moved the engine wiring harness around and then the truck would start. It was intermittent and an electrical automotive shop already replaced the fuse box on the driver side a year before for the same sporadic behavior while driving. I used to think it was a fuel rail pressure or fuel prime issue but it was electrical all along. The company that made the tuner is out of business, my concern was replacing the ECM and having to have a different tune installed that's supported because of the EGR delete... Thankfully its not the case, hope no one else has that issue with the engine harness

My wife and I have a 19 l5p dually cclb, are there any problems we should look out for? We also are planning to put the Banks power pack on it too in the near future. Our friends that have diesels are telling us to put traction bars on our truck. Are there any you would recommend? Any advice you can give us would be greatly appreciated. Awesome video. I recently went from a 2005 LLY to a 16 LML with only 41K. The truck needed a EGT sensor which the dealer replaced and the shop did a forced regen. I have driven the truck about 1,000 miles and it has not gone into regen again yet. Most of the miles have been on the interstate. How often should you see the truck regen? Doing Air Dog soon and getting a CTS 3. Never really worried about the LLY that much but all the emissions stuff on this truck worries the heck out of. Thanks for the great info!

I have a duramax with Allison transmission, I have 90,000 miles pull a 14,000 lb 5th wheel. Absolutely no problems, I do keep up with maintenance but it has been a great engine and transmission. 2010.

Transfer case pump rub up through the 07 Classic. Leaking power steering and transmission lines. Glow plugs LBZ. Seals in the fuel filter heads after a period of years.
