Duriander, I get your message about keeping high cadence to maintain power...Training with a small crank to help spinning more...I was looking at getting a smaller crank on my training bike (the one in my basement I use for speedwork during the week), and keep the normal one on my tt bike the weekend...What you think, is it reasonable to mix? Thanks a lot in advance

Okay so Cadence, that's all clear. and I ask this out of curiosity what gear were you predominantly riding. I've got an 11 - 24t cassette on the back. New bike is due in the next couple of months and that will have 11 - 32t cassette on the back. hills round here aren't long but they are steep.nearly always double figures or there about, frequently 14 - 15% there's a couple around 20% and one I ride sometimes with a 25% gradient. anyway with my current bike (11 - 24 cassette) I can't do high cadence up the hills, it's grind or walk. So the speed you guys were going at what gear do you reckon? also what sort of gradient is that hill on a minimum maximum scale. cause that was fast climbing.
@ivanboesky1520
@ivanboesky1520 7 жыл бұрын
Use an online gear/speed calculator and you can see what effective speed you are going roughly in any gear and cadence. Chris Froome, the TDF Yellow Jersey, was riding a 38 up front (small ring) with an 11x32 cassette in the back the other day up the final climb of stage 9 that had an 11% average grade. That's the TDF yellow jersey and best climber using a 38x32 and he was in the 32 for a good portion of that climb!! Nothing wrong with riding a 32 in the back or even a 36 if that's what you need to get to that 90-100 rpm sustainable cadence. Here is a gear calculator you can use: www.bikecalc.com/speed_at_cadence Plug in your gears and cadence range and hit the calc button and you can see exactly how fast you are going in different gears at different cadences.

My cousin's coach at his elite Italian U23 team (they race about 20 UCIs out of 50 total race days every year in Italy, France, Spain and Portugal) won't let them use power meters because he wants them to get to know their bodies rather than confining themselves to numbers. Since we all know numbers aren't everything, what are your personal opinions on that method?

+glenny oc it helps when you start training. but yes you dont have to have it, and sometimes its good to just ride iwthout looking at the power. Shit, in criteriums i dont ever look atmy power, i just look afterwards and compare to other crits to see how much faster or the amount of work ive done.
@frenchalpscycling5283
@frenchalpscycling5283 7 жыл бұрын
I agree with your cadence, and yes, when at your peek races, high cadence is necessary, but, as there is always a but, what is not understood by many is that high end cadence more so works top end fitness, and basic strength if you ride over hills, so its a given to get some strength, but, cadence at a high rate all the time is not great. It wond develop true strength and a good increase in WATTS. As an example, lance, Jan and many pros do over gear efforts and rolling in the 53 whatever to have around a 50 cadence to build strength on a consistent cycle through early training phases, especially off season base work at steady state intervals; without raising HR too much. Then when one is stronger, you train spinning, if one is stronger from various big gear sessions that are specific then if you can spin at 100 cadence ( by training it at the correct periodised time) 2 gears bigger from the previous season, then you are going to go faster. If you always have to rely on top end fitness its not ideal, I remember in the Lance period people were spinning around like idiots going nowhere as they are not developing strength. As you know fitness at top end on the bike is many facets of development. Aeorobic Base + Strength + High end Fitness + Cadence = Results or better anyway...cheers!

Given that you started at the back, you actually rode a far more impressive climb than the final group of 3-4 you ended up catching before getting dropped. You had to use far more energy than those guys, who were most likely all riding at or near the front from the start, whereas you had to continually work your way around different groups and close multiple different gaps time after time to get up to them. Pretty impressive mate.

You were saying it's not the best idea to sprint out of the saddle, so would you stay in the saddle the whole time when closing a gap? I always get out of the saddle at least while I'm accelerating to close a gap, and usually sit back down once I have enough speed build up.

Okay, Harley, I've been watching your videos for a while and find you 60% entertaining (strawberries), 20% interesting (kiwis), 10% educational (broccoli), and 10% jen e se qua (starfruit), for an oddly tasting, but nutritional blend of cycling edutainment. I've got a real question for you, though, with a little background. I would be happy if you, or anybody else reading could give me an honest and informed response. Here it is. I've been riding for about two years. I've dropped about 12 kg over that time from about 225 lbs to 195 lbs +/- 5 lbs depending on the week. I don't do a lot of climbing, but am looking to do more. My flat average is about 30 kph. ( I know, I'm mixing metric and standard.) My bike is a a 25 lb or so DB Century 2, which is very comfortable, with a compact and 32 on the rear. I've been riding that bike for a few years and just purchased a used 17 lb, CF bike with a compact and 28 on the rear. If I'm looking to start climbing, ignoring the obvious of get stronger eat more carbs and lose weight, which bike is going to allow me to climb with a better cadence, weight and ratio taken into consideration? In other words, lighter bike with 28 on the rear, or heavier bike with 32 on the rear? Educate me banana man!

Matthew Taudevin Make sure you are training with your fully loaded panniers once in a while, 35 kg is a lot and you want to make sure your body can handle it. if ya had the front during the slower part going into it im sure ya pry would have lasted. the accordion effect with group pack accelerations are a bitch and a half if your in the back on a corner or hill. This was a big mistake I made in my career was not positioning myself correctly. I was either at the front the whole time or I hanged to casually at the back and didnt move my way up the peloton during times when effort wasn't really needed to move up. After I learned how to position myself, I would hit the top 7 in every raced I ever raced in rather it be on a climb or in a sprint.
