A better explanation is that the course is designed with large 'waste areas' of sand and sparse grasses, but the tournament organizers designated these areas to be played as hazards throughout the course. The fact that spectators were allowed to stand in these areas is no different than when they stand in the rough next to more conventional courses. It was not practical to keep spectators away from those areas, therefore the notice was given to all players prior to the event regarding how these areas should be played. If such a notice had not been given, then Johnson may have been able to make the case that he should have been given relief. However, he did not even ask for relief and instead ignored the notice by grounding his club.

@@Randsurfer Your suggestion would have caused more confusion by requiring many 'rulings' as to which sandy areas were bunkers and which were waste areas. The committee did the right thing by pre-emptively stating that all such areas are to be treated as hazards. DJ either forgot or ignored said notice and he was penalized appropriately. The committee did the right thing prior to the event and the officials did the right thing regarding DJ. I really don't see any problem in how this unfolded at all. 0:34 you can clearly see DJ instantly realizes he made a mistake by touching the ground with the clubface. That indeed is a bunker, just look at the borders of it. It IS shaped, therefore it's a bunker, not even to mention the notes at 1:32 , and I'm ready to bet DJ thought exactly about it, just too late.. when he grounded. Imagine if you're first in the tournament, and you either win or end up second if DJ will or will not be given the deserved penalty. I know it feels bad to get a penalty later when you end the round, but that's how it has to be before the cup is given to the victorious. Golf rules must be respected, or the whole meaning of the game just falls apart. ps. Believe me or not, I don't really mind... but in my first tournament to become pro I ended up 11th, first 10 would pass. A deserved and heavy penalty wasnt given to two players playing in front of me, I would have become pro. I lost faith in fairness, I gave my whole life to it and to honest play. I quit playing golf for 12 years. Let golf rules be respected until the cup is given.

They may of made everyone "aware" with a letter posted in the locker room but this decision was crap. You can move your ball no closer to the hole for "ground under repair" or even "casual water" the rules say but a goat path where people have walked all over it and thrown trash down is considered a "bunker" also that letter said or referred hazzards last time I check if grounding your club in a bunker is a two stroke penalty when did a normal fairway bunker become listed as a hazard? If you hit into a creek that disects the fairway you can ground your club if in water, on the bank of the creek etc.. and it's not a penalty and that is considered a hazzard also... they may of posted this rule and DJ should have read / known it but this rule should never decided a winner. Stupid really
@95bochamp6 жыл бұрын
1) The player cannot unilaterally decide that an area is 'ground under repair'. The committee must mark it as such, otherwise it is just like any other area 'through the green'; 2) A bunker is a hazard. Geez....; 3) You can only ground your club in a hazard in certain ways under certain conditions. Johnson's situation was not one of them; Have ever even read the Rules of Golf, or did you just pick up what you think you know from the stiffs where you play?
@95bochamp6 жыл бұрын
All bunkers are hazards, making no distinction between those adjacent to a fairway versus those adjacent to a green. You should read the actual Rules of Golf to know what they actually say rather than relying on what you recall or your own interpretation of them. The rule(s) did not decide the winner. The players did. The player in question broke a rule that he had been made aware of prior to play, so he paid the price as he should have. If his actions were ignored, would that have been fair to the 155 other players who played their rounds without breaking this rule?
