@@rialbb A great review of Dustin. Let me tell you something. It's not the price always that tells you the good of the lens. Before I make my order I always use to look for reviews. Just compare Tamron and Sigma with Canon when you are looking for lenses. Tamron and Sigma lenses are quite good lenses with good qualities and more than $1000 cheaper. My next Macro lens will be the Tamron 90mm F2.8 Macro (F017) for Canon after my research and reviews. Hope my hints are helpful. Regards from Curacao Island.

Very nice review. Tamron really stepped up their game in terms of build quality. Mine feels and looks fantastic. I found mine to be a little jerky on the focus ring though. It's very smooth to turn overall but when it comes to fine adjustments, the focus ring tends to jump slightly. I don't know if I bought a lemon but the slight jumping in focusing is noticable in filming at macro distance where the depth of field is so narrow.

I have the F004 and it is definitely a good lens. However not sure whether my copy of the lens or the design was flawed, I have dust went in into the lens from the front element after just 2 days of use. Since small aperture has to be used during macro photography, the resulting image was ruined. I sent the lens back for cleaning, but was forced to add a UV filter so no more dust will ever get into the lens.. Kind of annoying though.

Wow, another excellent review from Dustin. Very informative especially for us who are looking to buy a macro lens (and will be my portrait prime also). For us shopping, the first question is how does it compare to the gold standard (Canon 100mm L) and you have answered that question. I would have liked to see more footage of the actual usage like how fast the AF is. I have the new 35mm and the speed on that is average. Having said that, I would compromise on speed to have better precision. To your credit you did mention that the 2nd Gen 90mm was already good and this new one even better. I don't think you mentioned if the AF was accurate but if you had no complaints on the previous one and this new one is better then I am assuming no problems there. Keep up the awesome work. Looking forward to the printed article.

I realize your interest is in this lens' use in still photography, but I'm wondering if you could comment on the dynamic behavior of the F017's VC compared to the F004? I noticed a bit of ratcheting in the framing of the shot where you tested for flare from direct sunlight, an effect I've seen in some optically stabilized lenses intended for still photography. I find the stabilization in the Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 VC works well for handheld video, and would be interested in which of the two 90mm f2.8 VC versions you think would perform more smoothly for video shooting?
@DustinAbbottTWI8 жыл бұрын
The upside of this lens is that you can actually tweak the behavior of the lens' VC for video in the Tap In Console. If you choose the "Viewfinder Stability Priority" mode it is designed specifically for video work. I find the Tamron lenses in this mode work well for video.

When framing a shot - with AF & VC activated - if I release the shutter button (e.g. to reframe the shot) the image in my viewfinder shifts position slightly. @DustinAbbottTWI4 жыл бұрын
That's a complicated subject that a lot of people are confused by. ALL macro lenses have a changed effective aperture at close focus distances (that's physics). For some reason, however, Nikon bodies actually show the closing down aperture on their bodies...but only for the Tamron lens. The physical aperture size doesn't change, however, and is still F2.8. The amount of light that can be gathered at macro focusing distances does change.

The earlier version of this lens could not get within 50 feet of f2.8. When focused closer than that, the widest aperture it could reach was f3. Any info on whether the new Tap-In Console version shares this limitation?
@DustinAbbottTWI8 жыл бұрын
I used the previous version extensively and never saw what you are describing. I can show you very close focus shots that are still at f/2.8. ALL macro lenses have a much smaller effective aperture value at macro distances. Look in the manual of a Canon/Nikon macro lens and you will probably find a section that describes that even if your camera doesn't show it. The Tamron behaves just like other macro lenses - just the camera doesn't hide it.
@QuicksilverSG8 жыл бұрын
Perhaps the particular lens (F004) I tested was defefective? I tried it on D5200, D750, and D500 cameras, and in all three cases it stayed at f3 until just before the manual focus indicator reached infinity, and only then did it open up to f2.8. I measured the f2.8 focus threshold distance at about 50 feet. If you still have the F017 version from this review, could you test it for the closest f2.8 focus distance?

@DustinAbbottTWI8 жыл бұрын
Fallen Star Features I think you would be better served by putting this question to Tamron. I can't tell you more than I already have.
@QuicksilverSG8 жыл бұрын
Here's Tamron's reply to my inquiry. I asked if it was typical for the aperture of the F004 90mm f2.8 VC macro lens to open no wider than f3 when focused on objects closer than about 50 feet: This is only an issue with Nikon lenses/camers. This is not only true for our lenses in Nikon mount, but all of Nikon's macro lenses have the same behavior. The physical aperture size does not change in the lens, however because the lens’ focus group moves forward when focusing towards the 1:1 magnification ratio, the amount of light reaching the sensor is reduced a bit. Canon cameras maintain the aperture value correctly at f/2.8, but vary the shutter speed accordingly. From your brief description of the issue it appears your lens is performing normally. Sounds like when the lens is close-focused, the lens' effective T-stop decreases enough that the camera interprets it as a reduction in F-stop. Unfortunately, this occurs not just at macro focus distances, but as far as 50 feet from the camera.
@dmay11008 жыл бұрын

Hi Dustin! I am thinking of trading in my trusty Canon 100 2.8L IS for this Tamron. If I understand your correctly, I will be just as well off as before, including IQ and focus, just gain additional weather sealing, correct? Any reason to still prefer the Canon? Also, do you think we can expect a new Tamron SP 180 macro sometime soon? Greetings from Spain, Dirk

+Canigou Cycling - Girona & Pyrenees Road Cycling I've heard nothing about a new 180mm, but that doesn't mean much. I didn't know this one was coming until the announcement. Image quality on the 90 (F017) is definitely as good if not a bit better. I haven't used the Tamron long term, but during my head to head comparison I saw nothing to indicate that your conclusion is incorrect.

Dustin Abbott Thank you for your quick reply! Honestly I will make this switch mostly for the neatness of my kit, lol Canon 16-35 4L, 24-105 4L II, 100-400 4.5-5.6L II plus all four new Tamron SP primes. Sweet! It took about 1 1/2 years to move to this kit from the last gen. Canon trinity 2.8L plus the 100 2.8L Macro. So much more creative possibilities by keeping the zooms at f4 and having some fast primes instead! The current Canon 2.8 zooms are just overpriced and it was great to see how much I could still get for my old lenses! Now, this final move of the Macro lens is basically free! Thanks for opening my eyes and enjoy Arizona ;)

Oh well, just one day before the Tamron 90 Macro arrive, my Canon 100 2.8L IS Macro fell out of my bag onto the floor. No visible damage at all, but AF & IS no longer function. I am afraid the repair will be quite expensive ... Does anyone have experience with this? Better to repair and then to sell, or is it possible to sell the lens like this?
@alivenesscyclingroadcyclin26738 жыл бұрын
The Tamron SP 90 2.8 Macro arrived and I absolutely love it! Yes, I can confirm that the VC on this SP lens is louder than on the new Tamron 35, the 45 and the 85. One downside to this lens is the filter size of 62mm. The other three SP primes (35, 45, & 85) have a more common 67mm filter. It really would have been much more practical to have this set of four Tamron SP VC prime lenses with all being the same filter size 67. Additionally, maybe with the bit larger opening, this Tamron 90 Macro would have been as bright, or brighter than, the Canon 100 2.8L IS Macro? I like how you point out this filter size issue on your latest Canon M lens review!

Third-party lenses are the way of the future. First party lenses are slowly becoming a thing of the past. A lot of people are focusing on the camera war i.e. mirrorless versus D-SLR. what we should be focusing on is our lenses and it seems like that issue is bypassing every camera manufacturer. Reason I say this is because the performance that Sigma, Tamron and even Samyang have given us, are also giving us very little reason to go with the first party choices. In these recent cases we get just as good build quality, just as good or very close to the same optical performance as the first party choices and in some cases, at almost half the cost. I sold my Nikon 50 f/1.4 for a Tamron 45mm 1.8, I am far happier because with the Nikon 1.4 was soft in the center, maybe just my copy, and I always found myself at 1.8 anyway. In contrast, the Tamron at 1.8 gives a very good performance. For macro I currently own the Tokina 100 2.8. The optics effortlessly reach those of the Nikon 105mm 2.8
@DustinAbbottTWI8 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting perspective. I definitely agree regarding the 45VC. Love the lens!

+Dustin Abbott I feel like the third parties are mere years from reaching first party quality in terms of build, AF, and optical quality. I don't know if you've ever used the Tokina 100mm Macro, but the optics mean serious business. The AF and build quality are nowhere near that of the Nikon but they do well enough for pro gigs. I have come to rely a lot on your reviews, I'd like to see your take on the Tokina 100mm Macro. I am far from a beginner so I don't follow the popular KZbinrs. However, I've compared your results to my first hand experiences and I found myself rarely disagreeing with your reviews, if at all. Ultimately, I decided to subscribe because of that. Jammed aperture blades is a common problem for us, we use our macro lenses during monsoons in Western ghats to photograph frogs and snakes and the humidity manages to jam the aperture blades. Amongst my group of herpers including my 100L, my friend's 100mm(Non L) and other friend's Micro Nikkor 105mm have had this issue. And a trip to service centre to get those jammed blades repaired is not a cheap one. I had mine repaired in last August but now in couple of months time Monsoons will arrive and I am worried of the aperture jamming again so I am planning to sell my 100L and replace it with this new Tamron 90mm VC.
@DustinAbbottTWI8 жыл бұрын
Chaitanya Shukla I can see what you are talking about. The more robust weather sealing on the Tamron should make it the better lens for you, then.
@ChaitanyaShukla25038 жыл бұрын
Dustin Abbott That's what I am hoping for, the better weather sealing would mean more reliable service during monsoons. When I talked with Tamron India, they said this new Macro lens will arrive in mid May giving me enough time to sell my 100mm L and just in time for monsoon's arrival in 1st week of June.
@DustinAbbottTWI8 жыл бұрын
+Chaitanya Shukla Perfect. I do believe the weather sealing is at a higher grade than the 100L. I have rarely been in a situation with mine that stressed it, but you've got a serious issue to contend with. Tamron is making a smart move in setting their products apart with enhanced weather sealing.

+Anthony Martin I think he meant that if you're looking for a good macro, then you could go with this instead of the first party lens. If you have the first party lens then you're fine. I personally use the Tokina 100 2.8. Optically, it easily contends with the Canon 100 L but no IS and the AF is noticeably slower. In my case selling my Tokina may be a good option because of the lack of IS/VR/OS/VC and slower focus speed. That said, I haven't had issues with focusing speed when I do weddings as I don't use it when a lot of subject movement is expected, the only incentive for me would be the VC. You get the point.

Very detail and excellent review as always, Mr Abott. Greetings from Jakarta. I own Canon mirrorless M5 and would like to check this lens bokeh, autofocus and sharpness with Canon adapter. Does this combination makes any diffrence in performance? Do you ever heard any issue on this lens with that combination (mirrorless + adapter + Tamron sp 90mm macro)? Thanks...!

I've not experimented with that combo. The only one of those factors that would be affected, however, is autofocus. The adapter has no lens elements, so optical properties are not affected as long as the adapter seats properly.

hi, after these time of using both canon and tamron, can you advise on which is still better since the canon and tamron one is now both in a very equal price.
@DustinAbbottTWI8 жыл бұрын
One big plus for the Tamron is the compatibility with the Tap In Console - it allows you to tweak a lot of the lens' behavior. The Tamron is a little bit sharper and has better weather sealing. First party lenses tend to have less glitches when you trade camera bodies, though. I honestly don't know which one I would buy if I didn't already own the Canon.

My god!!! Exactly the same thought i'm having. Really don't know if i should go for first or third party fro resale value.. Arghh.. Thanks a lot anyways... =)

Hi DustIn , Video Is Very Helpful Thank You For Doing It. My Question I shoot with a nikon d750 an i'm looking for a macro lens.. would you say this would be the best lens to get or would you recommend another lens..

Great review Dustin, as always. I’m really caught up on these two. The only problem is focal range. Is the Tamron really at a disadvantage?
@Loawks5 жыл бұрын
When it comes to macro. Can you achieve closer photos with the canon?
@DustinAbbottTWI5 жыл бұрын
That really depends on what you want to do with it (in terms of focal length). 10mm is a not a huge difference, however. Both lenses are 1:1 macro, so they both have the same magnification.

Dustin Abbott thank you for your reply. I appreciate you and your channel allot. Not everyone replies to their comments. I’m just interested in getting close and filling the frame with subject. Wanting those macro images of an insects eyes and all the details. I’ve been looking at quite allot of vids on KZbin, and I saw techniques like reversing the lense, extension tubes etc.... I’m surprised because I thought these macro lenses would be able to the job and zoom in more.... Macro, Tamron or canon.... lol. Thanks again

Great review Dustin! Wanted to know what is the closest focus distance that you can be while keeping the aperture at 2.8 before it starts dropping?
@DustinAbbottTWI8 жыл бұрын
+Edoardo Marino (Dodi) Technically the aperture will always be at f/2.8 no matter the focus distance. I've heard that rumor before, but it is baseless. The physical aperture does not change. The amount of light that reaches the sensor at very close focus distance might, but not the aperture.
@EdoardoMarinoDodi8 жыл бұрын
That's great! Not that I would consider shooting minimum focus at 2.8, but having this lens be with fixed aperture will act as a great traditional prime with a huge focus advantage. Also, have you thought about Tamron's moist and dust sealing construction be the cause of the Canon winning over with a higher light transmission?
@DustinAbbottTWI8 жыл бұрын
Edoardo Marino I don't know why that should affect light transmission. This is one area, though, that places like DXO frequently knock Tamron lenses.

Hi Dustin, How is this lens bokeh performance compared to the Canon 100mm f2.8L Macro?
