i have been using this lense on my 6D for portraits for about a year now. it is extremely sharp and never misses the focus. at normal portrait distances, 1/30th of a second works with the image stabilization. because it is a macro lense, it is able to resolve amazing detail in portraits. especially headshot type. resolving detail and being sharp is NOT the same thing. once you use this lense for headshots, you will understand. i also recommend it :)

Jesús López Hi friend, This lens has a system that is called or described as a “Shift Compensation System” that includes a gyro which to me is like a primitive 2 way gimbal.., ( I copy and paste the next statement from Tamron itself)... “An accelerometer that has been newly integrated into Tamron’s highly accredited VC to compensate for shakes on the x-y plane. The accelerometer in unison with a gyro sensor detects and enables motion compensation for camera shakes for a maximum efficiency in image stabilization optimized for distance ranges from infinity to macro.” Now, that system, in turn causes a weird feeling and noise in the lens when is constantly in use.., I believe it does it even when you are handling the lens by itself as well... but anyways, it does not cause any problems whatsoever with performance. It’s an awesome lens, so.., Enjoy it!

A suggestion, if I may. Since different lenses have different maximum apertures, could you make different bokeh tests between f1.4 through f2.8 [f4.0]? This lens might have a more attractive bokeh than others, but because of it's limitations, the bokeh doesn't look as good as an f1.8 lens at 1.8 but looks better at f2.8 than the f1.8 lens.

I am thinking to purchase Macro lens and due to budget, would like to buy this Tamron lens over Canon macro lens. However, I noticed Tamron has 90mm pld version (F004), the version before this, with much better build quality than the first version of 90mm AF. Definitely this oldest version is not my pick. Now, as the Tamron 90mm SP is double the price than the F004 model, what would your suggestions on F004 model compared to the newest one? In terms of image quality and the likes. Thanks a bunch! @DanielSetiawan226 жыл бұрын
A 50mm 1.8 is a good starting point to learn about possibilities of a prime lens and fast aperture, since it is quite cheap for an initial investment Bear in mind with APS-C camera, it has an equivalent FL of 80mm, some sort of telephoto lens which is great for head-and-shoulder potrait yet too tight for indoor usage
@TheMetalButcher6 жыл бұрын
Look at his videos on fast zooms, ultrawides, tele lenses, super zooms, etc. If you have a huge range of lenses you're considering you don't know what you want yet and you shouldn't buy. Go out, take some photos/video, and see where you are limited. Is it light gathering? Is it bokeh? Do you constantly find yourself needing more range? Do you find yourself switching from wide angle to narrow angle shots frequently? Do you shoot moving objects such as people, or wildlife? All of these questions and a whole bunch more are going to limit what lens you need. If you can't answer them, you might need to spend some more time with your kit lens. For example, I do a lot of video work where the 18mm end of my kit lens is just a bit too narrow and to dark. I'm on a tripod, so I don't need AF or image stabilization. Therefor the best lens for me is the Rokinon cine 16mm F/2. On a full frame, a 24mm F/1.4 would be the ultimate lens for my needs.

Hi Christopher, thank you for this and all your other camera/lens reviews to date. I was wondering whether it may be possible for you to review something called the "Neptune Convertible Art Lens" system which had a kickstarter campaign a while back and is now offered for sale by Lomography? I have been unable to find any video reviews worthy of note, with the only prominent youtube presence being commercial sales-type material. Given your track record of reviewing the weird and wonderful in addition to the mainstream lenses, I thought you may be the person to ask. I'm not really in to the whole lomography thing but thought that this lens system offered some interesting potential for both stills and videography but get the impression it may be much style over little substance. Again, thank you for the reviews you do and the work that goes in to them. . . and apologies for the length of this message.

Hi Chris, thanks for the review. My copy of this lens arrived last week, and I have to say, so far I´m blown away with it. It's built like a tank, and the autofocus is snappy. The image stabilization is great, and the images it produces are sharper than a surgeon's scalpel. I bought it from Adorama, who threw in the Tamron Tap-in Console for nothing, which is cool. As $649 is an absolute fortune for me, hardly was the lens out of its box than I slapped on a (Tiffen) UV filter, simply to protect the front glass. Do you think this would have an effect on the image quality, however slight?
@MikeTaylorPhotoArts2 жыл бұрын
Personally Peter, I haven't ever seen the need for a "protective" lens filter. The chances of an object connecting with the front element (especially if you have the lens shade installed properly) is extremely low. I use a series of Polarpro filters in the ND and Polarizer offerings when needed. Otherwise, every one of my Tamrons have the shade attached. If you like the 90, you may also like the 45 and 17-35 versions in the SP lineup. All are wonderful. As far as having any effect on image quality, the only way to know is to do a methodical comparison test. Generally, the more expensive filters produce better results than the budget versions. This is the main reason I went with the Polarpro. Test and see what you find out. Cheers.

@Tim van der Leeuw Hello Tim, how are you? I haven't used the tamron on my fuji xt4. To be honest, I tried a lot of lenses with my Canon 5Dsr, and found out that at least with my copy of that camera, Tamron worked better than Sigma. The Fuji 80mm is lovely but not when you want to crop to far in. For those ocasions I do prefer my tamron on my Canon, even if focusing is not that wonderful as with the Fuji camera. As both lenses are a fixed focus, what I usually do is try to make "Focus stacking" even if it's in the field. As an appart note, I tried the Laowa macro lens with the Fuji, and it works beautifully well, even if it's manual, which for me gets rather complicated, as I use glasses and my eyesight is not wonderful unfortunatelly. (I have a blind spot in my right eye) I haven't used the Fringer adaptor yet, Kind of hard to get it in my country of residence, Uruguay. I do hope this helps a bit? @Tim van der Leeuw Sorry for the late reply!!! Concerning lenses, I love the fuji cause it also goes with my fuji xt4, compared to the tamron which goes with my canon 5Dsr, so on one hand I have a stable body, which canon isn't and that makes a huge, huge difference. Concerning photo quality, if you can make a good focus, then the tamron lens plus the canon is amazing, but with insects in real life, in the field, this is harder. Specially with light conditions changing all the time due to insects flying around! Best for you !

My experiences with the older non-stabilized version of the lens cemented my distrust of all Tamron lenses. I went through 2 second hand copies before finally buying a 3rd brand new. That copy was severely backfocused and that I was only able to make use of it for non-macro work when I moved on to bodies that have AF Fine tune. Autofocus was unusable on a D90 body and because I bought it grey market Tamron in Australia wouldn't look at it instead suggesting I ship it back to where I bought it from. I did buy a copy for my Canon bodies as well, second hand at $150. The photographer selling it was fed up with inconsistent autofocus for portraiture, which has been my experience too on both Nikon and Canon bodies. It's a shame because when it nailed focus it was nice, but you might get 2 shots out of 3 with near perfect technique. This new version may be better but it is also much pricier which makes it less appealing.

@Nj Rh The response to me from Tamron was "it's a macro lens, not for portraiture". They just didn't stand behind their product. A real shame. I've never had much luck with their lenses, so I avoid Tamron these days.

You're honestly splitting hairs when comparing sharpness between 90-105 macros from all the major brands, even old ones. Best is to consider the features and budget.

Depends what you need - autofocus and VC on the Tamron lens, or the sharper image quality and closer focussing of the Laowa lens
@wergraphy42204 жыл бұрын
@@christopherfrost Hard question :D Both would be great. Is the Laowa Image Quality so much better than the Tamron?
@TheBobes6 жыл бұрын
I own "this" lens (Pentax-K bayonet). It's great for macro and for portraits. It hunts a bit but at least it has focus limiter. :) There is some colour fringing in direct sunlight, but that can be easily corrected. The sharpness is second to none imho.

Considering only $150 diff on price, which is the better lens: this or the Canon 100mm?
@breathLP6 жыл бұрын
I'd say the tamron has a slightly better build quality, the canon might have a slightly faster AF. Both have weather sealing, IQ wise they also should be on the same level.
@johndyke87356 жыл бұрын
@@breathLP Cool. Thanks for the info. IQ is always #1 imo, but if I can save a few bucks in the meantime, then count me in!

@@johndyke8735 I usually go for first party L lenses (I have the 16-35 F4L and the 24-70 F4L). But I figured that the Tamron would be the better option for me. Although, the price difference is also bigger in Germany (the Tamron goes for €550, while the Canon is €870). So the choice is a bit more obvious.

dxomark says the last version (nikon one) of tamron sp90 would give your more mpix... (24mpix vs 23 on d810, 15 vs 14 on df). as it stabilised (usable even at 1/4 secs) AND weather sealed it wins hands down. gen-1 tamron sp90 is worse (a lot) than tokina. but tokina's af is screw one, on z mount you'd loose AF (until some smart engineer creates ftz for old prong driven af :-))

Tamron has been making a version of this lens since the 70's, so they have practically perfected it. This current version is something like the sixth or seventh generation. They have always been good performers at a reasonable price. Please don't think this is a budget lens. It's every bit as good or better than the Canon equivalent.
