I have gotten excellent results having it for over a year and a half shooting birds and wildlife AFTER I calibrated it with the tap in console. It fixed issues from both back and front focusing from different distances and focal lengths that cannot be corrected with the only one setting adjustment my camera body gives me. The new firmware seemed to help it work better also. Stopped down to f8 it is very sharp, and good contrast. Even better than my older 300 mm f4 Nikkor. The main body being metal and it's 10 ring weather sealing, using it in a splashy kayak, is why I bought it over the 200 - 500mm Nikkor.

Good morning Mr Abbott. One thing I noticed having had myself the 150-600 G1 is the fact that on the G2 not only the mfd is lower but also the intermediate distance for the focus limiter is much better, 10 meters vs 15 meters it was before. I used it on not so large soccer fields and it wasn't easy keeping 15 meters between (on side tribunes) and the players. This is instead a definitely nice step forward useability.

Ive used the G2 in a shop in Tokyo, on a D7200 body (so very high res FF equivalent), it was soft at f/6.3 at 600mm, but manual focus improve it a fair bit, but I am not sure I nailed focus even with manual focus. The D7200 live view feed back lagged badly, and the problem with this lens on manual focus is the focus throw is very short making it hard to MF accurately at the long end. Good news is it might be very sharp wide open if you calibrate the autofocus, or use micro AF adjust etc. As I shot it at f/8 AF and it was very sharp at 600mm.

Daniel Lee You're exactly right about manual focus. Spending time calibrating this lens to get the best performance out of it will be very wise.

G'day From Australia Dustin. I have a Canon 80D and wanting to get into Bird/Wildlife Photography. The only zoom I currently have is the standard 55- 250mm kit lens - Not fantastic! - I have been watching your reviews on this the Tamron 150-600mm but have also been watching the reviews on the 100-400mm. With the Canon 80D being a crop sensor camera, is the 150-600mm just as good as the 100-400mm for sharpness. Or with the 400 equating to 640mm am I better going for that. I guess my question is, will I lose out on sharpness with the 150-600mm? Paying that bit extra for the 150-600mm for that extra zoom is enticing. But want my sharpness. Cheers. Stephen
@DustinAbbottTWI5 жыл бұрын
If you really want that amount of reach, go for the lens that covers the focal length you want. It does take more technique to learn how to get the best out of long glass, but the 150-600 is capable of producing beautiful images.

@b.g.42778 жыл бұрын
I picked up this lens a few weeks ago and so far I have to say the lens can be pretty soft wide open, especially on the short end. For example 150 at F8 in my experience is worse than 600 at 6.3. Was curious if your experience has been similar and if you notice it is really now geared towards the long end?
@DustinAbbottTWI8 жыл бұрын
That doesn't sound right. MTF looks good at 150mm. I didn't see anything off there myself, though I shot it more on the longer end during this review. Have you calibrated the focus to your camera? That can make a big difference.
@b.g.42778 жыл бұрын
I have never done adjustments on a lens, but guess I will need to read up on it and make adjustments here. Like you most of my shots have been on the long end and I am generally pleased with the results. I noticed the soft images at 150-200 this weekend and did some tests this morning. The short end was much softer than the long. Looks like there maybe some front focus there as well so hopefully the adjustments will help. I am looking forward to your comparison to other lenses, specifically the 100-400ii. I am still within my exchange window and may move up to the Canon since it is suppose to be sharp wide open across it's range. More compact and closer focusing will be another plus. Losing 200mm on the long end would be the only con, possibly a big one.
@DustinAbbottTWI8 жыл бұрын
Brian G. The 150mm end is pretty much as sharp as the Canon, so calibration is definitely your need. Most lenses need at least a little calibration. I checked a few of my 150mm images and they look very good. What camera body are you using? If it has Live View, shoot a few control shots with that (it usually removes focus issues from the equation) and see what you get.
@b.g.42778 жыл бұрын
I looked back at the samples and posted some here earlier: www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4069534 150 was actually better than I thought, soft at F5 and sharp by F8. Larger DOF can cover up slight miss in focus though so hopefully that is the case and the adjustments help. Thank you again for your input and keep up the great work on your channel!

I admire to see Tamron progressing on its gears quality... nothing serves us better than vendors competition! Recently I bought their 10-24mm 3.5-4.5 VC and enjoy a lot! Next buy to consider is T150-600mm G2! Still thinking of this versus N200-500 but seems like weather sealing and tap-in console functionality will win this match for Tamron... trully no w/s seems like design failure at Nikon... how many indoor events exist for 600mm reach... maybe at Nikon glass production facilities ;-)

Very nice review! I have had this lens a couple of years with my D7500 and it drives me nuts from time to time and I see that a lot of other users feel the same. Sometimes it just doesn't focus properly. Sometimes I can blame it on light, my photographing-skills, camerashake, shutterspeed,, heatwaves and so on but there are so many times when it should have focused right but it doesn't. Very close distances are more seldom a problem though if I should search for a pattern. I have tried a Nikon 200-500 which is much more consistent with the focusing. Just the other day I took bursts of a bird about 10m away sitting still on a branch and all photos were out of focus. I had good stability and shutterspeed of 1/800. Nothing was in focus. I don't have these problems with other lenses I have. I see someone has upgraded from a D7500 to a D500 and that did improve but it's too much money just to try. I have mostly tried VC1. The contacts are cleaned.
@DustinAbbottTWI3 жыл бұрын
Have you ever done focus calibration via the Tap in Console? Very often that is required to get peak focussing performance
@fredrikfindahl11843 жыл бұрын
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks. Yes I have tried that. Also with the reikan software. I didn't notice a lot if difference and the thing is that when the focus works like I want I get sharp pictures. Ok often the best pics are at short distance from the subject.

It looks like it has really gone after the Sigma Sport, which I must say I love partly because of its weight as it helps me with my physical difficulties. But that is far too complex to explain, but I have a battery grip and use it either on a Gimbal Head or on my scooter so no true hand shooting involved. I really like both Tamron and Sigma they make exceptional lenses at reasonable prices and as such I doubt I will get any lens envy. I like the idea that both these companies are pushing the boundaries and always looking for innovative improvements by listening to their customers. As always Dustin a very honest and thorough review, and your skin can shine as much as you like with your post shave products as you certainly shine out like a beacon amongst reviewers.

great review Dustin..what are your thoughts on the omission of the VC on the Sony Alpha mount ... will it be a great loss... and will the Sony IS be as good as the Tamron VC... and does the omission make it less value for money..?
@DustinAbbottTWI8 жыл бұрын
I do think that Sony shooters lose out. There is some argument about which form of IS is better, but I tend to feel that IS custom designed for a specific lens (particularly one that REALLY needs it like this) is going to work better than a generic IBIS. I know that running both IS systems at the same time would cause big problems, but I'm sure that a lot of Sony shooters would at least like the option of turning on their favorite IS system and turning the other off.
@warwickwolf39998 жыл бұрын
Dustin Abbott cheers for that...I get the option with my current lens...Siggy 150mm -500mm... and mostly use the lens IS... Although I've never actually done a direct comparison between the two... Thank you for the reviews of the G2. They have been very helpful in my decision process for adding some long glass to my bag. I am largely concerned about the performance on the long end and I looking to compare the performance of the Tamron zoom against a 400mm prime + 1.4 TC. I've figured that if the Tamron is best out to about 550, the 400+1.4 TC would be a comparable focal length. Do you have any experience with a 400 prime + 1.4 TC in comparison to the G2? I am extrapolating some here, but if the G2 is comparable to the 100-400+1.4TC (on a full frame), am I safe to assume that the Canon 400 f5.6 +1.4 TC would be at least as good - if not marginally better? Would it be fair to further extrapolate that the 400 f4.0 DO + 1.4 would be again slightly better? As a tangent, from your experience, would the G2 be better than the Canon 300F4 +2.0 TC? Mahalo!
@DustinAbbottTWI5 жыл бұрын
I suspect the 400mm + 1.4x is marginally sharper in theory, though in practice the lack of stabilization is going to mean that your keeper rate would not be nearly as good, plus you are operating at a maximum aperture of F8, meaning that you will take somewhat of an autofocus hit on many bodies. The DO lens combo is probably better in that regard. I doubt the 300F4 + 2x is better in any regard. It's image quality, IS, and autofocus performance will be a step down, and will cost you more money to boot (if you have to buy the 2X)

@DustinAbbottTWI8 жыл бұрын
Since you are already invested in your 100-400L II I would recommend getting the 1.4x TC. That being said, you will have more autofocus flexibility by moving to Tamron and not having to have a TC in the mix. On the 7D2 you will be limited by how much focus points you can use with the TC combination; you wouldn't with the Tamron.

I had a G1 series Tamron and was using it with a Canon 6D and was so dissatisfied I sold the lens. Wanted to focus/track Florida birds and that combination was not the ticket. Canon 6d is great for landscapes though. Not into the video, just photo! Have you used any of these lens with a mirror less camera? I am fascinated with what I am seeing with the Sony A7iii and the promises of the new Canon M50 said to be announced in March. I would love to hear of any experiences of these long tele photo lens with Canon M5 or M6 or Sony AIII. The Tamron G2 does come with a Sony mount but have not seen much on it. I would love to hear your thoughts. Really enjoy your video's and learn something new each time, keep up the good work. John Tillard, Spring Hill, Florida
@DustinAbbottTWI6 жыл бұрын
John, the Sony mount, unfortunately, is an A-mount, not an E mount. My experience thus far with long telephotos and adapters has not been positive. Autofocus is sluggish at best, and not fast enough for capturing action. Part of your previous problem for tracking is the fault of the 6D. It has a solid focus system for many applications, but tracking action is not its strength.

I expect the Nikon 200-500 to have slightly better image quality because it has a much more narrow focal range. It also has a 1.5x rather than 4x zoom range, so you lose a lot of versatility, and it costs far more. I think the upgrades to the G2 make this a much harder decision than before.

in uk the version 1 is £749 canon fit version 2 is £1303 canon fit so at almost twice the price it better be better.

That's a big jump. I suspect market forces will bring that down by next year.

Looking forward to the second part of your review! What I'm wondering is how the Tamron 150-600 G2 stacks up against the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary (Sport version is too heavy) and the Canon 100-400 L ii. The interesting things would be build quality, focusing speed, image quality, and practical use in the field.

I love the 100-400L II, and it suits my purposes well (I rarely need extreme reach, and can extend out to 560mm with an extender). It's a very expensive combination, though, by comparison. I'd take the G2 over the Sigma C any day of the week.

Once the new firmware for the sigma 150-600mm sports lens comes out can you do a review ?
@DustinAbbottTWI8 жыл бұрын
Probably not. My review schedule is extremely full, and going back to lenses I've previously reviewed isn't really in the agenda.

P.S A firmware update isn't going to make it lighter or more easy to handhold, and that was my only real objection to the lens. It's one of the most difficult lenses to handhold that I've ever used.

Yet another fantastic review! Can`t wait for the next part. PS: You look a little shiny in the outro part. :)

I had recently shaved, and use essential oils on my skin. That unfortunately equals some shine

Awesome Dustin, I'm really happy to see this review coming through. Thanks for doing these. Comparing this to the first generation is great, but I hope you will also compare it to the Canon 100 to 400L IS II as well. - Question, is this lens compatible with the Canon teleconverters or will we need the Tamron versions? I'd really prefer to only need to own one set. Thanks again for these reviews, I know they are a ton of work.

Those questions will have to wait for my second round with the lens. I had the lens for too short a period (less than six days) to do everything I wanted in the first round.

The first version, i found was "soft" ... beyond 450 mm ... How's the G2 version (sharpness) ??

I honestly don't care that much what it looks like our what it feels like it can be made of carbon fibre plastic,metal it's all the same what I do care about is glass quality and autofocus.

That's fine...for you, but understand that not everyone feels the same.
