I have had the "G1" since release in the Uk and use it on a Nikon D810. Having calibrated that with focal I'm really happy with the images I get, although you do need good light to get it performing at it's peak. Given the price point against the proprietary lenses I think it's fabulous value for money, especially at it's current price point. I really enjoyed your detailed analysis here and, for the moment at least, I'm sticking with the "G1". Sometimes you have to use what you have, after all, it's the photographer who takes the picture, not the lens. Thank you for another really good review.
@DustinAbbottTWI8 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right, Tom. I didn't move my own G1 in favor of the Canon 100-400L II because I was disappointed with the image quality at all. I liked the form factor of the 100-400L better and found that I wasn't often shooting long telephoto shots and didn't often miss the extra reach.

In regards to short focus softness perhaps using a short extension tube to bring the focus closer while the lens' focus mechanism is set to a farther distance may improve things for that usage.

Thanks for the review. I just played with the Tamron G2 and Nikkor 200-500 today at our local camera shop and liked them both. I took a few shots and felt that the image quality and AF were very pleasing. However the weight of the nikkor really puts me off. Your review really swing my decision to the G2. I will get it as budget allows.

Thanks Mate (i'm from NZ !!) for a good rundown on the G2 ..i recently bought a G2 and sold my G1 i loved the G1 on my 7D2 and mine was a good very sharp copy and pretty sharp at 600 too (960MM) the main reason i got a G2 was i splashed out on a 5DIV so wanted the improvement for the 5DIV as every little improvement helps with 30 Mpx !! the G2 has slightly better colour, contrast and sharpness its not night and day but the improvment in IQ is there, i think more noticable on the 5DIV than the 7DII .My wife uses a Canon 100-400MK2 with her 7D2 so ive tried them both out on both 7dII and 5DIV i have seen quite a few say than the 100-400MkII with a 1.4tc mk3 outperforms the G2 i personally have not found this ! at 400mm yes the 100-400 II is a little better than the GI and G2 (and so it should be..its a great lens and costs a lot more !) but the Canon at 560mm(with 1.4T/c) compared to the G2 at 600 i still feel the G2 has a very very slight edge on both 7D2 and 5DIV (which in fact says a lot for the 100-400MKII with the 1.4T/c mk3 as its nothing short of excellent with the 1.4t/c ie very little loss of sharpness ) when i want 600 i will use the G2 !! up to 400 i would i flog my wifes 100-400 MK2 when shes not looking if i didnt have my 70-200 F2.8 MK2 with me !! thats my 2 cents worth !! blessings everyone Alan

I'll directly compare those two in my next go-around. The difference may not be huge between the G1 and the G2, but just a little improvement makes it one of the best.

I agree and thats why i upgraded without hesitation !! by the way i can handhold the G1 and G2 at 960mm on 7D2 with VC on quite satisfactorily mind you ive been a rifle shooter for 45 years that thats helps in squeezing of the shot at the right moment !!

Hi Alan, on the 7d MK II can you use all autofocus points when zoomed all the way in? I know that all AF points are available on f5.6 lenses, and only the center point on f8 lenses (like when using a teleconverter with the Canon 100-400mm f4-5.6). I'm having trouble finding clear information about what happens in between that range though like this lens where it is max f6.3 at the long end. Thanks for any info you can provide!

I own the G2 since a few months (use it on a 7D MK1) and I don't regret to buy it. Having in mind that a professional 500mm or 600mm lens costs several times more than the Tamron, the preformance of the Tamron is really on a surprisingly high level. When I compare with my professional Canon 70-200 f/2,8 L IS2 Lens, of corse the contrast is not the same Level (it would have been utopical to expect that) but it's not that far - and it's nice even, so it's not a big deal to add a bit sharpness by Lightroom or Photoshop. I'm really surprised how good this Lens preforms.

It's true - the level of image quality these type of lenses provide for the money is pretty exceptional.

Thank you for your excellent review Dustin. I have recently sold my Sigma Sports lens and was about to order the 100 to 400 canon lens for my 5d mark 4 body. After seeing your review I am having second thoughts. The Tamron 150-600 G2 has some great features that could work for me.
@DustinAbbottTWI7 жыл бұрын
I think the big question to ask yourself is how many of your shots you are taking over 400mm. The 100-400L II (which I own) is a fantastic lens, but requires an extender to reach past 400mm. Your 5DIV works well with the 100-400L II + Canon 1.4x III combination, though. The G2 has a lot of the features of the Sport but at a much more manageable weight and balance. It's a nice lens. I haven't directly compared the two lenses yet, but will be doing so soon.

At 600mm on my 760D/T6s I get quite a few soft images below 1/800 even at f8. It's only soft for distant objects. There's some occasional backfocusing (unfortunately no microadjustment for the 760D) but I think the main problem is the VC (the viewfinder image seems quite clear). Up to 500mm I get good images even wide open. I like the fact that I can still use f5.6 at around 400mm unlike my previous Sigma 150-500 which would change to f6.3 around 300mm. I think the Tamron is much sharper at the focal lengths of the Sigma which is quite soft even at f8. Do you know where I can get the Tap-In Console in Canada?
@DustinAbbottTWI7 жыл бұрын
The Tap In is definitely what you need, as it won't matter whether your camera can do AFMA anyway. You can get the Tap In here: store.amplis.com/p/tamron-tap-in-console. Use code AMPLIS52016DA to get 5% off
@FrankyboyLegend7 жыл бұрын
thanks for the info. It seems the discount code has expired though. What focal lengths can the focus be adjusted for using the Tap In? For the most part the autofocus seems to be fine but today it kept front-focusing on a target 10 meters at 600mm. Maybe the target (a hummingbird) was too small to focus accurately. Using the live view focus seems pretty accurate so I suspect it's my camera's phase detection acting up in certain scenes. Also it seems there's certain focus distances where the lens is softer at 600mm, even using a tripod and manual focus. Another quirk I noticed is that the VC sometimes turns off completely by itself unless I restart my camera.
@DustinAbbottTWI7 жыл бұрын
I've been assured the the coupon code will still work (use the phone if necessary). You may benefit from a firmware update on the lens via the console.
@FrankyboyLegend7 жыл бұрын
Is this code still active? I wasn't sure whether to buy from amplis or if a store close to my area (BC) would have it. I've had no luck as such. I was told Kerrisdale Cameras can ship it but they still get them from the east. Also, as I bought this lens overseas, I am not sure if Tamron Canada would honor its warranty. I'm not sure if its just me but the VC isn't quite as sharp as that of the Sigma and seems to leave fairly thick white edges. I know Tamron advised not to use regular VC for panning or high shutter speeds but these were not an issue with my Sigma. The main reason I changed it was because its VC started to jitter if I panned slowly diagonally upwards.

That is going to depend a lot on your camera. F6.3 isn't a ton of light, so a better camera will do a better job focusing in low light.
@KaiHinLkh8 жыл бұрын
But again, comparing the image quality at f/8, are there any noticeable differences between them? The first version wide open at 600 mm has always been mediocre, but stopping down to f/8 improves it significantly. Given the light transmission decrease, it seems that you get the exposure of G1's f/8 with G2's f/6.3 anyways...
@DustinAbbottTWI8 жыл бұрын
Stopping down to f/8 still provides a notable increase in sharpness. In fact, it is very sharp at f/8 - 600mm now.

@alivenesscyclingroadcyclin26738 жыл бұрын
Yes, i totally agree with you: impossible to give up the 100 - 400 L II! It has superb build quality, amazing optics, can be hand-held all day and the MFD of 975mm also makes it a very nice complement to a macro lens when shooting details like flowers. Something that I did not expect when I first got the 100 - 400 L II. So it can not be a replacement. But, the extra reach would give capabilities that many of us could otherwise never afford. I would love to occasionally do some BIF photography with the Tamron 150 - 600 G2 - possibly even with an extender (does the Canon 1.4 III work with the Tamron?) and on an APC camera (How about the AF points with extender? 80d or 7d II - otherwise the 7d III will most probably be able to focus on all points with f8). Having this possibility on the horizon is exciting! Many regards, Dirk

It is controversial, isn’t it. I’m often surprised by that. In this case, though, I didn’t compare the lenses side by side, so I can’t say conclusively which one works better. Hi, i am planning to buy this lens for Wildlife photography, specially birds. I will be using it with a canon 7d mark2 body. Will it be a wise option for the same? i have a doubt about the focusing speed of this lens ?
@DustinAbbottTWI8 жыл бұрын
Focus speed is actually quite good, and the 7D II has a good focus system. Should be a nice match.

The 200D doesn't have a particularly robust focus system. It would work, but it definitely isn't going to give you your best performance

Distinct, would you choose this over your Canon 100-400mm V2?
@tomdunlap5098 жыл бұрын
Geez, spell correct changed your name😒
@DustinAbbottTWI8 жыл бұрын
Not for my personal use, no. I really like the size of the 100-400L II. It's easier to transport, and it's rare that I shoot really long telephoto, anyway. I throw an 1.4X extender (or an 80D) on it when I need more reach. This combo works really well on the 5D Mark IV, which I'm mostly shooting with now. If I didn't already own the 100-400L II, though, and was considering price, that might be a whole other discussion.
@maxx39978 жыл бұрын
Love the 100-400 II, would never consider a third party again, had the V1 twice it was not even close to the 100-400 II under any circumstance & can't imagine the V2 being that much better than the V1 as far as panning & focus speed compared to the MK II:) The MK II is it....enough said:)

I have always been skeptical about these super zoom lenses because they do not deliver outstanding image quality, but your review is really tempting me to get one :)
@DustinAbbottTWI8 жыл бұрын
This isn't really a "superzoom" (it is only a 4x zoom range), but your point is valid. All of these 150-600mm variants are surprisingly good, though.
@jaimeduncan61678 жыл бұрын
Something to add: They are no match in terms of performance , subject isolation or image quality to one of the Super telephoto primes from Nikon or Canon at a comparable focal length, but we know how much that kind of lens costs and the lack of flexibility.

Dustin, I have the Tamron 35-150 EF currently using it on an RP and there are times I'm frustrated with shots that are clearly not in focus that I thought were. You mentioned about "Calibrating" your lens for the camera body. I'm wondering if that might solve my problem. What is the best way to calibrate your lens? Thanks, Sean
@DustinAbbottTWI3 жыл бұрын
You shouldn't have to calibrate focus on the RP. That's reserved for DSLRs. I'm a little surprised that you aren't getting accurate focus on the RP. Perhaps you should reach out to Tamron and see if there is a firmware update. Also, what adapter are using?

Dustin Abbott no I haven't tested it yet, but I think I'm going to trade in my nikon 1.4 III for the tamron, it may very well be that it'll focus better with the Tamron 1.4. Have you tried your Canon extender to see if you saw a difference with the Tamron? Thanks.

Funtastic review.... thanks a lot... Even after almost 4 years this review makes sense. I have a question though. How does it compare to the 100-400 is ii. I know they are both different. But a friend of mine told me that when shooting birds in flight the tamron 150-600 g2 is obsolete and we can always crop the image from 100-400 instead. Is it true. By the way I am going to use it on a 90D body for bird photography....
@DustinAbbottTWI4 жыл бұрын
I don't really agree with your friend. Why then buy a telephoto at all? Just deeply crop your 24-105mm... I always recommend that if you regularly shoot a certain focal length, buy the lens that covers that natively. I do think the Canon is the better lens overall, but it certainly isn't better at 600mm. Still, on a 90D you may find that the 400mm reach is enough, and you can always supplement that with a 1.4x TC when you need a bit more reach.
@karthikr1774 жыл бұрын
@@DustinAbbottTWI wow...That's a fast and beautiful reply. Thanks a lot ... With the extender it will be more than doubles the cost of the tamron. Also the focus and sharpness also takes a hit. I am as of now using the 55-250 along with 18-55 and 50mm on my 80D and am finding the 250 as a bottle neck a lot of time. If you are saying the 150-600 is good for birds in flight then I think that's the lens i should pair with my next cam the 90D. Its coming next month. Hope the focus and sharpness is good. Again thanks a lot for the quick and detailed reply. Thanks a ton - Karthik from India

hi dustin, I bought 5dM4 in December with kit 24-105 f4L II lens (before I had Olympus omdem1, then moved to canon 7dmII and now I m on full frame and wont be going anywhere else!) I want to built my lens gear for full frame as I m a hobbyist and photography is my passion. I m not that rich to afford several similar lenses but yes I wanted to & can invest in a good quality lens that can last many years. I am considering to invest in telephoto category and am confused to go with either tamron 150-600G2 (sigma is too heavy for me) or with canon 100-400L II? I do photography for myself because I love to and I don't earn from it. I have tried these on Henry's store but still not able to decide. what would you suggest in my case? just wanted to have an expert opinion for a long term investment. thanks.

Hello, I have Sigma S 150-600. Can you tell me which lens Sigma Sport 150-600 or Tamron 150-600 G2 has better IQ overall? And also better AF? I use C50D. Do you think that AF behaviour changes a lot if I buy Canon 7dmark2 cause now with my Sigma I have a really poor sharp images of BIF and a lot better result with more static situations. And also - adding 1.4 TC with C 7dm2 to S 150-600 Sport gives me still AF? When I was buying my Sigma there was no Tamron 150-600 G2, so I hope that this Tamron has at least a little less sharpness than my Sigma 150-600 Sport cause I will regret my extra weight even more now ;). I walk and shoot handheld and God Sigma S is a bit bulky and heavy. I went for Sigma S cause then it was the best deal if it comes to the sharpness at long end and also I've heard that with Tamron G1 there were some problems like with AF..
@DustinAbbottTWI7 жыл бұрын
I still think the Sigma Sport has the slight IQ edge, but it's not significant, and I do like the handling of the Tamron better (much easier on you!).

Thoroughly interesting and a top notch review. I bought the G1 in England when it was first released and it is my go to wildlife (my main interest) lens and I have been very pleased with it. I can live with the build quality of the G1, but the G2 does look a real step up in quality. When calibrating the G1 (with FoCal) I found the sweet spot was at F/14 which could be restrictive for an already slow lens. I'd be interested to know if you've any feel for the sweet spot on the G2 (accepting that different lenses may vary slightly) as if it were to be around f/8 or better then it may be time for me to upgrade as that extra gain could be a game changer. Thanks again for a great review. PS I still use the Tamron 90mm macro you recommended some time back and still love it). Kind regards from England.

Which is best to buy?? Canon 100 400 is ii Tamron 150 600 g2
@DustinAbbottTWI6 жыл бұрын
That depends on your needs. For me, I own the 100-400L II + 1.4x for the times I need more reach, but I also own a camera that supports an f/8 combination well (5D Mark IV). I prefer the smaller lens. For others, however, an f/8 combination doesn’t work well on their body, and they would prefer the native longer reach. The 150-600 is the better choice for them.

why should we have to "focus in" this lens to our cameras? surely the lens should be programmed to work properly on the cameras it is made for. i take it you mean making micro adjustments to tune the focus....any chance you could do a video on this please....if you have te time - but i really would hope that manufacturers would have tweaked their firmware for each of the cameras in the range.

I have reviewed or used close to 100 lenses, and I have seen next to none of them that did not benefit from at least some kind of AFMA microadjustment. @DustinAbbottTWI8 жыл бұрын
I'm cynical because no matter how much you do, people always ask for more. The number of people who own a 50 MP body is minuscule. The 5DIV has a much higher pixel density than any of other previous generation Canon bodies and is a better camera all around than the 5Ds or 5DsR. I just spent nearly $4700 upgrading, and you are complaining that I should have tested the lens on a more pixel dense body.

The Sigma has a heavier build (perhaps a bit better), but it is a LOT heavier. If you want to mostly shoot handheld it is a serious workout. The Tamron has a nice build but is much easier to handhold. They have roughly equal image quality.
