Dusty Springfield was an incredible talent and a powerhouse female performer from England who had many amazing hits during the 60s. This was the decade when talent was real and plentiful, and it seemed as if the never-ending supply of raw talent would never end.

Every time I hear music from the 50's and 60's I realize that I was very fortunate to have been around when the greatest music was playing every day, all day long!!! Love it!!!

@tradde11 I was raised in the late 50s and early 60s, and the level of talent from those days seemed endless. There were so many artists from before the British Invasion and during the invasion that were far superior to me than anyone or anything in today's music altered by pitch correction, auto tune, and half naked dancers to dustract the audience from the fact that there is no talent or originality on the stage in front of them.

Exactly. I grew up in the 50’s & 60’s I used to tell my sons, and now tell my grandkids; If the world is still here in a hundred years, people will STILL be listening to my generations music. NOBODY will remember most of that crap you people listen to. Now that my sons are older they agree with me. They love it all now. They tell their kids (my grandkids) “better listen to your grandpa. He’s right.” Lol

This is one of the great British female singers from the 60's. She had such a beautiful unique voice & covered many genres (blue-eyed soul, pop ,ballads, country, jazz). Her biggest hit was "Son Of A Preacher Man" in 1969. She had a lot of hits such as "I Only Want To Be With You", "I'll Try Anything", "Wishin' & Hopin' ", "The Look Of Love", "The Windmills Of Your Mind", "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" & many more.

Fantastic performance. Back when singers only had the voice to count on, no multiple takes, no auto tune or vocal effects and no lip syncing.

Dusty is the greatest white, female singer of all time. She can sing anything better than you ever thought it could sound. She had it all. Her vocal interpretations are second to none. RiP Dusty, taken from us by breast cancer, 25 years ago today....on March 2, 1999. Listen to her sing Goin Back and Some of Your Lovin by Carole King, and Losing You, written by her brother Tom Springfield for her. 24 Hours From Tulsa, Just a Little Lovin, and Tupelo Honey are just a few gems....and of course Son of a Preacher Man, The Look of Love, and Spooky. She truly was the Queen of Blue Eyed Soul. Her full name is Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien, a woman of Irish Catholic descent, born and raised in London, and who attended convent schools. DUSTY was her stage name. This is an Italian song, with the English lyrics commissioned by Dusty and written for her by Vicki Wickham and Simon Napier Bell. It is a Dusty song, anyone else is doing a cover.

Absolutely loved Dusty’s voice, she used to be with her brother and maybe another guy? She once said about the song “Preacher man” as soon as Aretha recorded it she knew by Aretha pausing for a short breath it would completely blow her version out of the water it didn’t of course we lost her far to early, there used to rumours about her heavy eye makeup, she was losing her sight or wouldn’t wear glasses 💜💜

Speaking as a life-long Dusty fan with every song by her I could find, I have never heard one that I don't still enjoy listening to. She has sung everything from folk songs to Jazz. I have some favourites and they are not necessarily her biggest hits. She can be dramatic as in this one, sultry as in Spooky, The Look of Love or Tupelo Honey or contemplative as in The Windmills of Your Mind. Her earlier solo work, after "The Springfields" disbanded, was heavily influenced by Tamla Motown and she was instrumental in setting up a special edition of the popular "Ready Steady Go" pop music show in 1965 that was devoted to performances by the members of the touring Tamla Motown show which launched them in the UK, during which she performed with some of the artists. Several of the artists in the tour have said how influential that particular show was in breaking them over here. Although I have gone on a bit, I could probably write a thesis on her and her work but relax, I'm not going to do it here. I would however like to refer you to her album "Dusty in Memphis" as a high point in her oeuvre.

You asked, "Why don't people sing like this anymore?" I think this was a hypothetical question, but I want to answer it anyway. They don't sing like this anymore because they don't have to. Today all you have to do is look good in some skimpy costume and sing and then an engineer on a sound board back at the studio will make the song worth listening to. The person who had the worst audition on American Idol could be autotuned right into the number one song in the land and that is just wrong! As a result of this many modern-day singers have gotten lazy. When Dusty Springfield sang this, there was no such thing as autotune and singers had to stand (or fall) based solely on their own voice so they practiced and practiced and practiced until they got it right. These songs were recorded before a live studio audience and all the musicians and the singers were on stage at the same time and were recorded at the same time. If the harmonica was supposed to fade out, the person playing the harmonica would know when to start playing more softly or he would just casually back away from the microphone. This was NOT something that was fixed back in the studio. You were expected to know your part and do it flawlessly and do it in one take. I live in Nashville and I used to go to the taping of many shows and their performances showed singers at their very best because if they made an error they might have to do another take and that was so expensive that their producers would not have tolerated a bunch of mistakes. Also, when we went to see our favorites in concert they were actually singing. If someone had tried to lip-synch, I think the entire audience would have got up and walked out. If we wanted to listen to the recorded version we could have stayed home and played the record on our record player. Young people today don't seem to know the difference between singers who are autotuned and singers who just had fantastic voices so consequently they do not give the respect for these OLD singers that is due them. I hate that.
