Just a bit of trivia! Dusty lived on my Police Beat many years ago, and she lived only a few doors away from another 60's female pop singer, Sandie Shaw. There is a Memorial stone dedicated to Dusty at St Mary's Churchyard, Henley-on-Thames - Oxfordshire, a town local to me. Her ashes were scattered in Henley and in Ireland at the Cliffs of Moher.

'Dusty' was a nickname she acquired in her childhood when she would play with her brother and his friends. They apparently called her Dusty because she would get happily get 'dusty' playing their games! This was her only UK no.1 hit, the words written in a hurry because they had to record it in short time. 'Son of a Preacher Man' is perhaps her other best known recording, that I would recommend. Her real name was Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brian!

Dusty was amazing and one of a great crop of female artists from the UK in the early to mid sixties Sandie Shaw, Cilla Black, Petula Clark and Shirley Bassey. The other great voice is Judith Durham of the group The Seekers, though Australian they came to the UK and had a string of UK chart hits. You have just heard one of the most influential singers of the last 50 years.Dusty started as a folk singer then transitioned into a single pop singer around 1963( I OnlyWant To Be With You was a Top 10 hit) She became a fixture on variety shows in England and America in the 1960’s and was being thought of as a singer that the parents liked. That changed when Dusty recorded Dusty in Memphis. She merged her stylish voice with Memphis Blues and the Delta soul sounds. This combo was a revelation and this with her look made her a symbol. Female singers that were popular were either counter culture hippie chicks( Janis Joplin) or fashion models( Diana Ross) Dusty was an approachable stylish modern woman. She had the look of a young baby boomer confident woman. Her look and sound paved the way for the modern female pop singer. After you become familiar with Dusty you will hear her voice in many and this includes recent singers like Amy Winehouse. This incredibly talented woman was considered to be the first white female soul singer. The artists that she enjoyed listening to were many of the black artists of the 60s. Dusty had SOUL. One of her last before she departed was a song called "What have I done to deserve this" with the Pet Shop boys. A wonderful dance song. Really one of the best. Dusty was a pioneer in many ways , true blue eyed soul. She brought many Motown artists to the UK in the 60s citing them as her influences . At the heart of Apartheid in South Africa she was due to appear in concert,the caveat in her agreement was she insisted on playing to a multi racial audience, when she arrived she discovered that the powers that be would only permit a white only audience , she refused to perform and returned to the UK. She has an awesome back catalogue, my personal favourite is The Look of Love , sexy sensual and so soulful.

Great great singer, numerous classic dramatic hits and one classic album 'Dusty in Memphis'. Apparently she suffered from nerves badly and went to record it at Muscle Shoals but was so intimdated by them they had to record the backing tracks and Dusty went to NYC to sing over them. She had a very difficult time with her sexuality and her private life but made a comeback with the Pet Shop Boys in the 80's and sadly passed in 1999, something of an enigma really she was shy and retiring but hugely respected by everyone.
