Het volkslied zoals dat werd gezongen bij de doop van Sophie was ‘Wien Neerlandsch bloed door d’ad’ren vloeit’, gecomponeerd door Johann Wilhelm Wilms op tekst van Hendrik Tollens. Het Wilhelmus was tot 1795 onder stadhouder Willem V in gebruik geweest maar de katholieken vonden de teksten verwerpelijk wegens calvinistische propaganda. Pas in 1932 nam koningin Wilhelmina het aloude ‘Wilhelmus’ weer in gebruik.

"Great has been the reign of our Queens" said Churchill when our dear departed monarch Elizabeth II ascended the throne in 1952. He could have been referring as well to the triumvirate of Wilhelmina, Juliana & Beatrix, who reigned over the Netherlands for over a century with such grace & dignity. King Willem Alexander maintains that tradition too. Such a pity we don't hear this song more frequently, along with the Het Wilhelmus. Lang leve Nederland!

het was pas in 1817 officieel ingesteld als volkslied, niet in 1795. Wel een prachtige video!

Prinses Sophie werd geboren in 1824. Die kleding lijkt me uit een wat latere periode, 1840-1850?

Does anyone know why the Netherlands National Anthem was changed from this beautiful song to the current "Het Wilhemus?"

Most of all, the tekst is not inclusive. "Whose native Dutch blood flows through the veins, free from foreign taints" is the first sentence. Excluding all non white people from whatever place on earth. Not really a good way to start. Queen Wilhelmina was not a fan of this song preferring the much older Wilhelmus in which her forfathers where praised. She named her only daughter after the mother of William of Orange, Juliana van Stolberg. In 1932 the Anthem was replaced.

@@1336mg dat kan ik dan aan jou adviseren, want het is algemeen bekend wat Tollens met die regel bedoelde. Dat jij het thans zo opvat is het probleem jouws hoofds.
