Het woord "hoor" gebruik je ook vaak om de ander gerust te stellen en verbinding te maken met de ander. Stel iemand vraagt of je koffie wil en je zegt: "Nee, hoor". Dan zeg je daarmee zoiets als: "Dat hoeft niet, doe maar geen moeite". Alleen "nee" als antwoord op die vraag, klinkt voor Nederlanders anders nogal bot. "Je hoeft niet te schrikken, hoor", is ook als geruststelling bedoeld.

There's a line in the old (but well known) American TV sitcom "Beverly Hillbillies" theme song - "Y'all come back now, y'hear?" I've often thought of the Dutch "hoor?" this way. "y'hear?" literally means "do you hear?" and is used for emphasis.

I’ve always wondered what hoor meant. Always hear it at the supermarket when they ask if you want a receipt. ‘Nee, hoor’ is the usual answer. I started using it, but hope the girl on the till didnt think I was calling her a whore.

Dat was weer en heel mooie video. Bedankt, Kim! Ik ben Duits en ik woon in de buurt van Keulen. In onze dialect zegt men ook "eens" in plaats van "mal". "Hör ens" (dialect!) betekent "Hör mal". Ik denk dat de beste vertaling voor "eens" in het Duits "mal" is. En ik denk ook dat ik het Nederlands tamelijk goed begrijp omdat het op onze dialect lijkt. Taalkunde vind ik echt interessant!

Hi Kim (moi uur Grunnen!), just a curiosity! In the beginning of the video you say "Een ding DIE ze allemaal gemeen hebben...". Shouldn't it be "een ding DAT ...", since it's "het" ding? Obviously I'm not questioning your grammar hahah I'm just curious if there's a specific reason why, or in spoken language sometimes the de/het related words like die, dat can be used somewhat fluidly. Hartstikke bedankt!
@giusax89
@giusax89 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the quick reply!! Really I was just wondering about that to take pressure off myself about getting them always right, since as you very well know DSL learners tend to obsess about de/het a lot and get anxious when speaking (instead of trying to just have fun chatting!!)

Super cool, thank you, Kim. As a German speaker, three of the four words are easy to begrijpen for me: "weer" is a cognate of our "wieder", "eens" is like "eins" and I see an overlap in expressions like "Verdammt noch eins!" especially in dialects. "Wat" is like German "was" which in German flat also is "wat". In some German dialects the usages are similar to Dutch. But what about "hoor"? How can I enter it into my system? I never knew until this video. Only now I understand it comes from the root "hören/hear". So a "hoor" at the end of a sentence is like a little "do you hear me?" phrase. Aaah! You live and learn.

Dat accent 😆 woardjesss, hoar, wear (weer), ggraan (gaan). Minst mooie accent van het Nederlands (goois??) . Is niet het gangbaarste accent. Kun je ook gewoon ABN praten (middel Nederlands, wordt t meest gesproken in midden en zuid Nederland) ? Zo leer je mensen wel een apart accent aan, met deze uitspraak lessen

The worst thing about those words is that they seem very out of place in the sentence. I try to translate it to English and find any sense why these words are there, but it's very hard. It's like one word can have hundreds of meanings.
