I remember stories of people applying in the 90's when the lottery started when no one knew about it. You had to mail in your application but it was super easy to get selected then as in every third person got selected 😄

@simon The number of entries stated in the visa bulletins is for ONLY QUALIFIED entries. In other words, actual total entries will be much higher since quiet a number of entries are always disqualified.

Would be cool to see how many that apply for the lottery from Sweden. Around 130 people get selected I think where as around 50-70 of these get the VISA.

Hi Simon, useful info as always... On another video of yours I asked if there is a way of going over the probability of winning selection for a couple based on region and Vs odds over entering over multiple years. Any video on this would be really awesome. A dissection of the math would be gratefully appreciated, I used chat-gpt to do most of it for me lol but might be useful to the broader public knowing the increased odds

Something to be aware of is that regardless of how many years you enter, your chances remain mostly similar. There's no preference of previous entrants versus new entrants. Imagine flipping a coin 20 times where you get 13 heads and 7 tails. You would be mistaken to think that you have a better chance of getting heads again. It's random. Past random data should not be relied upon to forecast future events. Being a couple doubles your chances, but in the grand scheme of things, 2 pebbles amongst 5,999,998 other pebbles still does not produce a huge advantage, but an advantage nonetheless. I take it that the chance of winning each year is completely memoryless however wouldn't you increase your lifetime odds of winning if you entered every single year? Would the math look like 1-(probability of not winning) to the power of (years entered)? So it's quite significant

@@raineypeter Oh yeah, I guess there is an increase in chaces in the sense that if you only entered once your chances are very low compared to entering every year, because of your anual entries. But for each DV year, your chances are the same from one year to the next (unless the US government make changes to who qualifies and who doesn't and less people are able to apply or be selected).

​@@viorel- ah okay thanks yes I think that we are both on the same page now. I checked the math over 5 years for entering as a couple in Oceania and it looked incredibly good. So I was wondering if my math was off or not (20.09% chance of 1 person in a couple winning within five years entered)

If a couple each entered for OC region for 5 years, I would imagine the chances one would be selected is higher than the 20%. Of course that can change as we can see the example of DV2024 where Fiji just got a massive increase in selectees - so the number of entries must be changing there.

Hi Simon, I just came across your video today. I found out about the dv program 2 days ago and I have some questions. Not sure if you have already answered them in other videos. How does it work regarding finances. If selected will I need to already have secured a job in America prior to applying for the program, or will I be given a time frame in which to do so or to prove financial independence? Also how soon would I need to move if successful?

It is a lottery, anyone can enter. At the interview they consider your ability to avoid becoming a public charge. Having good job prospects can help, or having savings or someone in the USA willing to help. When you get the approval you get a one time use immigrant visa, and that has a 6 month expiry date to enter by then, but of course, once you enter you are free to stay or leave. No need to overthink it.

After submission of your entry, quit the browser don't press the resume button or the back button because it will attempt to submit another entry again by default.

It's not a problem. It is simply catching the potential problem of duplicated entries, but it is caught before any damage is done.

There are various methods. They use photo recognition technology, data searches and so on. They are looking to remove duplicate entries, fraudulent entries and so on.

There are some years where there is a second draw. It only happens when there is a low number of selectees. The last time it happened was DV2018.

OC1 is the lowest number. In DV2024 case numbers have been reported up to OC49XX, but numbers above 2000 are somewhat high and numbers above 3000 are very risky.
