I’ve been having what I call the fisherdwarf’s curse. Every time I task a dedicated fisherdwarf to do that job after some time of building up my fort, initially not having them do that job because we were busy getting plants and vegetables as fruits to go as substitute food and drinks, they ALWAYS get murdered violently by a werebeast. And the collateral damage is also a dwarven child.

Hell yes. Dwarf Fortress has been my favourite game for about 15 years. It is, with no irony whatsoever, the most ambitious, visionary game I have ever seen. So many hours making mods, firing up forts and adventures, and witnessing the most entertaining stories videogames can offer. I can also second the Kruggsmash recommendation. Start with the legendary tale of the walrus man adventurer and his merry band of badgerpeople.

Dwarf fortress always brings back good memories for me, I remember a fortress by Jefmajor, what must be well over a decade ago by now, some above ground monstrosity of towers. I remember specifically how that let's play ended with all the dwarves gathered on the sky bridge before being dropped many Z levels onto the ground. Dwarf fortress always has amazing stories and I feel privileged to have listened, read, played and watched many over the years even as the years continue to make me more jaded Dwarf Fortress always brings a smile when I recall all the stories and experiences.

The fact that you refer to the SA Let's Play forum as being from 'back in the days' makes me feel old. I am not one of the true elders, but I believe I was there in the forum when Boatmurdered happened... wow, it's been an age. Also, Tex? I'm of the opinion that Dwarf Fortress is a perfect fit for you. You say that you are not good at video games, but DF is not about being good. It's about the journey you go on, and the stories you produce along the way. Having been marathoning some of your LPs recently, I can confidently say that, whatever skill you may or may not have? You are excellent at stories.

1:00:00 I've only ever once built a doomsday device in DF, a titanic water cistern as tall as the game would allow with a drawbridge at the very bottom that would explosively flood the map if opened. I was so proud of myself, until I had to use it and discovered I had missed a single roof tile somewhere and everyone drowned. Everyone but a single dwarven vampire who for some reason was a legendary swimmer. I headcannoned that he sabotaged that roof tile to claim the entire fortress and it's riches for himself when the floodgate inevitably opens. Good times.

Thanks man, I really needed this today and didn't even know it. This game is indirectly referenced in one of my favorite books of all time, "You" by Austin Grossman (I always say it is sort of like Ready Player One for smart people who actually know a thing or two about gaming history and development) - The company in the past hit hard times and their savant-ish co-founder wrote some stock prediction software to sell to corporations in order to turn a quick profit. Later, they find out that the back end of the software generating the economic models was actually a dwarf fortress like game, where the dwarves living their lives and going about their business were generating the data which was then presented in a professional looking front end. It ended up being a bit of a disaster due to a persistent bug in the game engine which is a great part of the story on its own. One of the few books I have read more than 3 times, very much an underappreciated classic.

The way cats adopt Dorfs in DF is not really that surprising, at least to me, or anyone else familiar with how cats were domesticated. Short answer is they were not, they self domesticated. Longer answer: Feline domestication began as humans settled down and began farming. This meant those newly settled farmers began storing food, as well as killing or driving away large predators that might be a threat to either them of their livestock. With all that stored food (relative to the wild anyway) vermin moved in, rats, mice and so on. The cats followed the rats and mice, and just stayed. Human farms were relatively safe, larger predators were kept away mostly, there was plenty of food in the form of the vermin, so they just... stayed, and eventually began to move into our homes. I also have a whimsical outlook on the domestication of dogs as well. I am absolutely positive that at least part of that process was a couple of kids wandering out to explore, and finding a cute fluff ball of a wolf cub. Bringing it back to show mum and dad they then began the refrain that parents still dread even to this day. Muuuuum, daaaad, can we keep it? While I do not think that is the whole story of how our best friends came into our lives, I firmly believe t is PART of that story. Us humans have not changed that much in the centuries since. Sure our societies have but we have not. Kids will be kids, that is as true today as it was 15000 - 29000 years ago when dogs were first domesticated....
@dwwolf4636 Жыл бұрын
Yeah. Fun. One of the bigger HFY stories has cats and dogs going extinct due to a *virus* humans brought back from the first FTL extrasolar expedition. That included all the uplifted dogs, dog boys and cat people. (We like new friends ). After 8000 years and some *fun* we finally manage to crack the problem. ...... Only for Humanity itself to go basically extinct and locked up in the Human built universal backup system ( we lost the keys and forgot it existed ). Cue sad doggos and cats and our other friends. L
@alganhar1 Жыл бұрын
@@dwwolf4636 Read that one. As a father myself I can vouch to the 'can we keep it?'. Both my daughters have pulled that one on me on several occasions. I was the worst though according to my mother, I would collect just about anything, and as my father was military and served Long Tours (2-3 years) we lived in some interesting places... with interesting beasties for me to 'find'.... Was grounded for a month once for bringing a Fer de Lance home! I don't think any of my family were particularly surprised when I went into Marine Biology (specifically Marine Ecology)

Looks like fun so i tried to play (V50.11, no mods). But it does not show the toolbar on the bottom and has also some other HUD glitches in non-ascii graphics mode under Win10 that render it unplayable other than in ASCII graphics mode. While I agree that game-play outweights graphics by far, I am also not used to that any more. A bit easing on the eye (maybe one railroad tycoon 3 or sim city 4 level) is meanwhile also required by me, otherwise I will get too confused. Hope it runs better for you Linux and Mac guys.
