@@HTX_Son Why? I am not "wealthy". No, it is the domain for those trying to find something deeper and longer lasting. It is not an easy landscape though, it is full of diversity and detail.
@neovxr11 ай бұрын
@@HTX_Son we need to deconstruct "wealthy" into people that look down on us and treat us like they treat their herds of cattle, and others who are humble and just take a lot of responsibilites for the sake of something productive, and to maintain bigger things that exist and are good. Tiffany knows her responsibilities, but foremost wants to be human among humans, and do what she can the best way she can.

@@HTX_Sonlive classical music performance still is but the playing of classical music and listening of recordings has certainly been completely popularized. To limit one’s conception of what classical music is or what it’s for to any particular form or function is sophomoric.

Why is it that no matter how long ive been a fan of Schumann and Poon that they both still surprise me and bring tears of joy?
@pasadenaphil88046 ай бұрын
That is why classical music doesn't disappear. All of the timeless classics have been played thousands of times by the most brilliant musicians of every generation and yet a few very talented artists always seem to find a way to breathe new life into them. So the magic doesn't get lost. We have no recordings of Brahms, Beethoven, Mozart nor any of the other great masters themselves do we don't really know what they sounded like. So it may be the fear that we will never know that attracts new artists from every generation in a pursuit to really understand them that keeps them alive?

No, it looks that way but not at all. She is very versed in social media compared to 98% of other pianists, she has been an active youtuber from the early days of youtube . She is among that younger elite of pianists who have grown with a youtube audience sharing thousands of their inner feelings on cameras weekly for years. She is naturally nervous by default, it is tied to her personality of being tremendously demanding to herself. She understands that solo pianist career in this age is more than just being a private person appearing on a stage. Like many Asians she is extremely ambitious and i think she thinks she has not met her self imposed goals. But her musical education is the most golden path possible, She is a 100% Julliard product from child and has won some international competitions. I think she is a bit upset with herself that she has not risen to a more prominent established person in music. Pianist is about one of the most competitive career out there and out of 10,000 pianist 9,900 will not live from performing only and maybe only a handful will be somewhat recognized worldwide. The struggling artist life is what she is experiencing despite being at such a very high level. By trying to make classical music more mainstream she hopes to open more opportunity of success for her pianist career. The next best thing for a pianist who struggles to live from performing only is to become a professor in a top academic university. A few famous pianists juggle both lives. My guess is that she might eventually enter the academic profession but even that is extremely competitive because there are sooooo many super talented pianists everywhere applying for everything and more pouring up every year.
@imqqmi11 ай бұрын
@@ericastier1646 Well then she must be a great actress to feign nervousness that well then lol! Putting your opinion and relationship with a composer as a person out there to the general and highly critical public in the music world is scary, at least that's what I would feel like. I can't speak for Tiffany Poon directly but I can fully imagine it'll be something that takes courage. I've heard from many performers that nervousness is always there and there's always apprehension about opinions and critique afterwards. Goes with the territory, no matter how long you've done it. I do agree with you Tiffany seems to be a professional dealing with tension and exposure like that, she handles herself very well in that regard, even though there must be days that are quite hard to deal with 'the internet' at times.
@ericastier164611 ай бұрын
@@imqqmi Ok, you misunderstood my first reply. She is not feigning any nervousness she is nervous ! and i agree that it is unavoidable and comes with the profession. That is not the point. No, what i replied to you for is that based on having known her youtube antics for a good part of a year, opening up herself and spilling her inner thoughts regularly to a large audience hundred of times for years, she is used to do that, she even likes it. it did not require her to be especially "brave" (she is by default), and that she certainly does not felt "exposed" as you wrote. Actually most pianist are extroverts and don't mind sharing what music evokes to them deeply or what connection they feel with the composer. No her nervousness in her case comes purely from her highly self critical nature regarding her performances. She always appears nervous in her thought process and is known for wide mood swings it's not anything to do with this interview. She has extremely hefty goals and her concern is quite the contrary of what you think, she'd want to be more exposed, more covered and followed like a star. She is nervous about not being enough on that path.

Tiffany serves the music with her heart. I once listen to her practicing, while I could not hear any difference, she criticised her execution "this note too strong, that note a bit out of sync... Very demanding of herself, so her performance is a polished work, the music just carries into my heart.
@colinm942311 ай бұрын
I'd be willing to bet this is what she meant, at the end, when she was reflecting on her performance: She said "Too many wrong notes (19:35)". To me; and, I think, to many, this would mean too many ACTUAL wrong notes (e.g. hitting a B instead of a C). but, for her, I think it means, as you say, a note being too strong (or weak), or being out of sync, etc. Like you say, her performance sounds polished (actually to perfection), and it carries to my heart also. Like she always says: we must continually 'strive'.

Tiffany does seemingly possess a direct communication with the spirit and intent of Schumann. I find myself as a versatile not just a musician, rather complete artist. Luckely, thanks to some circumstances, a lots of self struggles, luck, God and a lot of different people I made it. I also teach pupils, play solo and with solo singer, also compose my own music for the piano and chamber music which I really like to play, learning foreign languages (speak 5 languages, soon 6th), learning solo singing, improvise and arrange the music... Very correct i followed her around 2014 , and it is what i remember. She has tragedy and pathos built into her personality but she draws a tremendous amount of energy from it, and it does not affect her abilities at all. I can see how she feels a sympathy for Schumann. I remember how she talked so uncertainly about herself when she flew into a piano competition but won first prize no problem which stunned me. That is certainly humility but yes she is very hard on herself. The world is a harsh place.
