you mean without a director? they could but imagine you are a trombonist in a corner of the scenario, with the whole (or most of it) orchestra playing at the same time, do you think you would be able to hear the cellos or the violists? would you be aware of how loud are you playing? or if audience is gonna be able to hear you? of if you are matching the musicality of the piece and with the rest of the orchestra? that’s why there’s a director needed

Good orchestras can play most of the music without any conductor. It's even a very good training for an orchestra to try to play a whole piece without the conductor, just as they are making chamber music. But the conductor hast several very important tasks besides "waving the stick". He or she gives the interpretation (even in Mahlers music, where he writes so exactly what he want's the musicians to play, there's plenty of opportunities to do it this or that way - and the conductor takes care, that these multiple ways match together), watches over the rehearsels and gives important impulses in the concert. A very good conductor makes the orchestra play better than every musician on his own could possibly do.
