Honda Shadows and other Honda motorcycles use the same or similar turn signal, or indicator switches. These switches get gummed up and are hard to operate. Rather than replace your Honda turn signal switch, learn to disassemble it, clean and lubricate it, and have it working good as new.

Hi Dennis, thanks for the video. After being garaged for a couple of years my Honda VTX 1800 needed a new battery then fired right up. The only part of the bike that was ailing after that downtime was the turn signal switch. I followed your procedure and it did the trick. Even after 2 years, your video is helping people...good-on-ya mate! Cheers, and thanks!

Hey Dennis, Great video. The switch on my '04 VTX 1800 got so bad I considered taking it to the shop to resolve before I watched your video. Once I saw how easy it was to disassemble the housing and remove the switch assembly, I knew this would be an easy fix. I expanded on your steps to clean the switch by popping off the black contact plate from the white plastic frame of the switch, so both the copper contacts on the slide and the contact points on the black plate (wires attached) could be thoroughly cleaned and lubricated with dielectric grease. Works like new again. Thanks again!!!

Huge thank you for making this video. I had taken the right side apart as my 07 Honda shadow has been having intermittent headlight issues and a friend of mine at a place called Fast Lane out here in Boise told me about Honda being notorious for having headlight and starter issues since they’re through the same button as to say the headlight is linked to the starter Button, and when you turn the bike on the headlight should be on press the button, the headlight you starting the bike and then the headlight comes back on. For a couple of months now, I’ve been trying to find someone that was knowledgeable that would be able to just take care of it for me. Let me Pam with no luck so then I went to KZbin eventually about a week or two ago. I found your video had a little bit difficult time getting a hold of the cleaner and the grease, as I wasn’t finding the exact stuff that you’re using at O’Reillys over here, but I got something close to it and just before five mountain time I went through the throttle side and fixed up the starter button and then right after that went through the clutch side and near The same stuff that you did in the video turn signal and I almost couldn’t put it back together because I forgot about the little copper disk with the notch in. It went back to your video saw it and knew where I needed to put it and was able to put everything back together together. Jinx myself, but my headlight would always be really finicky when turning on the key and as soon as I put everything back together after cleaning it and greasing it, the headlight is now on immediately when I turn on the key and then stays on until I hit the starter button and as soon as I let go, headlight comes back. I was honestly about to just sell the bike with the issue and buy a different one and I saw your video and thankfully was able to get that stuff done even though I procrastinated for about a week. I really love this bike and riding so thanks again for posting the video. It definitely saved me a lot of time.

Hi Dennis. This is a follow-up to my comment from a couple of weeks ago. Recall that my signal switch lever was broken at the 90 degree bend. So surprised that Honda does not sell this as a separate part. After the clutch cable and the gear shift lever, it must be one of the most used parts on a bike and, therefore, prone to failure. As previously mentioned, instead of dropping $150 plus Canadian, on an entire housing assembly with wiring, I MacGyvered a nice repair. The lever was soldered and filed smooth at the break. I then flattened out a 12/2 cable strap with a hammer and recreated the oval opening with a drill and round file. The strap was then snipped and trimmed to size and bent ninety degrees. It was then glued and clamped to the top of lever with JB cold weld, steel reinforced epoxy [advertised strength of 5020 psi]. I let it cure for a full day. After removing a bit of excess epoxy I filed everything smooth and lubricated it with dielectric lubircant. I replaced the original top washer with one approximately half as thick, in order to compensate for the additional thickness of the lever with the addition of the modified 12/2 cable strap. I just installed it and everything works like a charm. The switch has never worked this well in the eleven years I've owned this bike. Cleaning and lubricating everything were critical to that result. Hopefully, the repair proves to be sufficiently robust to endure. Once again, thanks for posting a very informative and helpful video. 🦅🏍✌

Thank you, Dennis. I was hesitant to do the repair, and I was planning to take the bike to a mechanic until I found your video. I had the grease and the parts cleaner. You saved me about $150 ($50 switch and $100 labor). The only addition I would make is when replacing the completed housing, make sure to rotate the housing until it snaps into place, and then the cap will fit flush.

I have to say, great job on the instructions and the video/camera job. You explain it calm and easy to be understood by everyone. There is only one thing I could ad to all of this. In stead of buying a can of electrical cleaner you can also use WD40. It cleans even better and is also save for electrical connections. Adding to that, it also disperse water because it doesn't evaporates like the electrical cleaner. Bonus with the WD40, most of us already have that product laying around. So zero cost. Another bonus is, you can clean chrome and leather with it as well. It will not damage the leather in any way or form. On the contrary, it'll feed the leather because it's oily. And it'll give back A beautiful shine to it.
@cedicol
@cedicol 2 жыл бұрын
O and also... Use it on black plastic. You'll be amazed how those plastic's will turn out. For example. The plastic covers on a car's/truck engine. Only downside would be. You're going to want to clean every plastic bit under the hood because now the look crappy.😅😅

Great video and I was all excited to clean my turning signal switch but was not able to do it. The throttle side screw complete stripped. Tried everything to get it out and no luck. I'm going to have to order an entirely new unit and somehow break apart the old one to replace it. I was able to clean it some by spraying contact cleaner into the housing and letting it dry out. Works better, but still a little sticky. Regardless, your video was helpful.

I'm glad you were able to get it cleaned enough to work well. Hopefully the new switch assembly will take care of it. Thanks for watching, Roberto!

This is a great informative video. The only thing I could ding ya for is saying a Phillips in the beginning. Japan's Phillips aren't really the same I can't remember the name off hand.

Yep, you're right! They are JIS, rather than Phillips. Good catch! Thanks for watching and pointing that out, Matthew!

Good job. Used your video to help clean mine. One suggestion: use a Q-tip with contact cleaner to clean the points inside the rocker switch. It gets in there good.
