Corpsman to Registered Nurse. Based my entire nursing career on what I learned from being a Corpsman. I hope that you work towards becoming a Registered Nurse and after a Nurse Practitioner. Thanks for your posting.

If I am already an ICU RN with my BSN...should I even bother becoming a corpsman? I have some urge to join the military but I am already 28. I'm considering SARC or becoming an officer. Im not really sure what route is best for me, or if I should just get my masters for anesthesia. Any advice?

Can you enlighten us on how you transitioned from corpsman to the nurse corps. You doo need to have prerequisite classes before you can be even accepted in the nursing school right?

@jtk917 Be a Navy nurse. Why go to all that school to work in a lower skilled job? I'm a former Corpsman and tell you the education and training to be a RN is a higher level. Corpsman is great, don't get me wrong. A lot of what he is talking is bravado. Corpsmen talk a lot of shit. We do a lot, but there is a big difference between nurse and Corpsman. I'm not in anyway putting down Corpsman training. There is a lot of training. Not all transfer to civilian jobs. I worked in health care after I got out. I still had to get certified to actually get a job in a civilian hospital. A nursing license will automatically qualify for a nursing job. Corpsmen are not automatically licensed or certified. You do that on your own.

Fifteen years in, Two ships, Four years with my Marines, Two aviation commands, only spent one year at a hospital, right after Corps school and Field Med. Only regret, didnt get to go to Dive School because of my eye sight. Have had the greatest adventure during my 15 years. Done so many different jobs. I am so glad I went Navy instead of becoming a Air Force Med Tech, like I originally wanted to do.

I'm a retired Navy Corpsman 22 years. I joined right out of high school. Looking back on the day I joined seems like a won the lottery. I did not even know what a Navy Corpsman was till i joined. My testing said I was eligible to me a Corpsman or a mechanic .....LOL. And trust me I was not that smart in school. but i guess they look at your mechanical skills to be a Corpsman. No regrets, the sky was the limit as a corpsman...

I just recently signed for HM. When I went to MEPS they told me no they don’t have any availability but little did they know I had a card up my sleeve. I had a signed letter from my EMT teacher stating that I was enrolled in the class and wouldn’t be done with it until April. This was December I was in MEPS btw. The guy who was getting my rate told me he technically isn’t supposed to be putting me in DEP unless it was a college class, which it wasn’t it was through a local ambulance company, but then he asked me how much I paid for it. Told him I paid the $1500 in full (I didn’t, I was on an installment plan and I had only made the first payment at that point😂) and he told me he would feel bad for me wasting my money on it and told me he will work me into shipping out in April. I signed for it and here I am now still taking the class and itching for that April date to arrive 😅

Gonna unpack here a little.. Delayed Enlistment and went upon HS graduation. 8 years active duty 79 to 87 and got out as a HM2, was an 8483 and 8404. Spent 1st year in training Boot, HM A school and Surg Tech C school (was not a push button) orders to Corpus 1 yr, then 2 yrs Rota. Orders to BUDs in 83 and broke my leg in Hell week and then got cellulitis that I was hospitalized for.. ended up at FMSS and being assigned to Med Battalion and going on West PAC with MSSG11 (best duty ever as “DOC” for the LSB Marines) I was the Beach Evac Team Leader (was an HM1 or HMC position at the time)on landings and had 3 jr corpsmen assigned to me. I completed Mountain Warfare Training in Korea and JEST in the PI with my Marines (never sat in the rear with the gear.. always did the training. I earned the FMF Ribbon (think this is now a pin)and was always a 300 pft guy (top marine fitness score in the 80’s)The goal whole time with FMF was to recover to go back to BUDs. Ended up reapplying and qualifying for orders back to Buds in 87, go back to a Hospital or get out. My wife at the time surprised me with an out of left field ultimatum “if you go the Spec War pipeline.. I’ll divorce you” so faced with that I got out n walked away from what had been a life I really loved and was good at. I ended up getting into Medical Device Sales (Ortho Recon/Trauma and Spine) I just recently retired as a National Director having enjoyed close to a 40 yr career. The bottom line I was successful because of what I learned as a sailor and corpsmen, I was able to apply the lessons learned of ownership, leadership and commitment. I read through many of the other comments and think most us did get something positive from our experience.. and there isn’t anyone of us that served that didn’t know the shipmates that did only the minimum and sat in the rear with the gear, complained about everything, got out and had nothing to show for it. You only get out what you put in.

Hi Brother, my husband is a foreign trained doc and just got atf/hm/bht with e4 after one year so we are very happy with that. A school might be fairly easy for him so he will use that time to try and pass the US exams for foreign doctors then see what he could do within navy from there. He's not a party goer at all though, I hope he will still fit in haha. He's such a nice gentle guy and very serious about study etc, just hope it's not too rough in there for him.

It's hard picking up for Corpsman, but not impossible. You gotta work hard! You gotta put in the work consistently, not just cause it's Advancement or MAP Season. Chiefs see right through that shit. And about 80% of HM are lazy shitbags so it's easy to shine.

I picked corpsman because I sucked too much at the time to make it through BUDS. So I became a corpsman stricky to deploy with marines because it was pretty much the only navy job to still see combat. I did actually focus alot on my medical training so I could perform well, but I was embarrassed at how poorly trained they are. A motivated CLS marine could do the same job. Unless you do 18D as a SARC, its becoming a useless rate with the advancment in medical training for all troops.

Without appearing to be a prick, he's right. Guys are constantly asking about becoming Corpsmen. Of course, the downside is that it has become difficult to advance. For the most part, it's great duty, but it isn't for everybody. There are, in my opinion, too many billets and that makes the Navy bring in people that lack the intellectual skills needed to be effective in the rate.

@@dwkvideos is this true? the youtuber JustYoon is an LS and he said it's alot of hard work and long hours. atleast when he was on deployment. and if i'm correct, LS's spent %60 of their career at sea duty. (sea duty is the same as being deployed correct?)

@dwkvideos
@dwkvideos 5 ай бұрын
If youre saying undertrained to be a doctor? Sure but thats not the point of corpsman. Were EMTs, stop bleeding and send to doctor Sick call isnt our actual job man so you cant really be undertrained when the problem is actually lack of real doctors
