Yup, if you can afford the space and have both the physical ability and the time. It's a nice idea, but it's never going to work to just do for ourselves. We need communities of people helping each other. Maybe pairing a homesteading family with an apartment building in the nearest city somehow? I live in Southern California and have 2 chickens in my backyard. However I am up to date on all my vaccines, including the latest flu virus for this year. I would recommend people to boycott the chicken industry until this is under control. Having chickens is easy and they lay an egg everyday! Also they are nature's famers, great for the soil. My mother, niece and niece's daughter had all the symptoms last week but weren't diagnosed with bird flu, but they weren't tested for it either. That was in NC. Apparently the symptoms include nasty eyes and lungs but not a severe sickness. They had all of them, starting with the eyes and later the lungs.

There is a reason we learned about Louis Pasteur as a medical hero in school. Raw milk was the source of many illnesses & deaths before pasteurization. There is a reason most dairies still pasteurize milk even after the regulations were lifted. And, yes, masks are a good idea when dealing with animals to which the bird flu has now spread. Zoonotic diseases have led to catastrophic pandemics in the past. The 1918 "Spanish" flu, which really started in a pig farm in the Midwest USA, is a classic example of widespread human death from a zoonotic disease
