Hi Rebecca. I really love how both of these skeins turned out!! Very cool, very unique, very pretty! I am so very glad you have such a passion for dying yarn! Your yarn dying passion has been very educational for me!! Thanks!!

Thank you for sharing, I love seeing the colors “in the flesh”.like this. I liked the blue purples but berry crush was new and exciting to me It really doesn’t matter what colors you do next, I would watch anyway. I would like to see you swatch the blues. There are so many blues! Personally I want to see the turquoise’s teals, cyans and aquas. The reds would be very interesting. I find the greens and bronzes fascinating as well and always wonder which I want to consider ordering. .yellows? Neutrals? Just go with your instincts! It is all good
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
The issue I have with reds is that they are all so close! I swatched a bunch for the watermelon video, and some of the differences are so subtle I think I'd need to do a 1% DOS of each to really see the difference. I'm excited to do more!!

This experiment was so helpful! it's amazing how different the purples can be, even when they are named the same. I like the pan with blue purples but the Dharma amethyst is my favourite of all the colours today, even though it's not really a true purple. I'd love to see a red group.

Glad it was helpful! I think on of my favorite parts was seeing what was unique for each brand and what colors were super similar to each other (at least in this dry powder form!)

I'm neutral as to which colour group you should do next, but I'd love to see you include a dab of food colouring in with these colour groups! So if you do blues, maybe include a few drops blue no 1 as one of the colours etc.

This isn't a bad idea to do at some point! Maybe I could try to match the color right colors with acid dyes at some point to see what they're dupes for.

The Greener Shades 'amethyst' purple is more muted because Greener Shades doesn't make a good cool red or magenta. It's just as pigmented or as dark. But it's not as bright or chromatic. The presence of some yellow in the hue mutes the purple (opposites on the color wheel). Fun fact: in the art world blue purples (blurples :) ) are called violet. The redder shades can be referred to as purple or even red-violet. These dye companies likely all source from the same manufacturers, so that's part of why many of the shades are so similar between brands. If you can't afford all of the shades you really want, I would suggest purchasing a rainbow of clean colors and making your own muted shades when you want them by adding tiny amounts of the complementary color. Looks like the purple pop has extremely tiny particles in the pink portion of the dye--because of the way it really likes to whoosh out! That's an amazing color! I wonder if it's fluorescent?
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
Oh cool!!! Purple pop is very fluorescent! THe pink pigment in there at least is.

Can we get a fiery jump into orange? (deep dive doesn't seem apt for orange, lol) There's your citrus orange, terracotta, brown, yellow, pumpkin, and more red tones. I'd also love to know if you follow my hunch about cadmium in orange and yellow acid dyes. I'm specifically thinking about Dharma Monarch that has a cloudy particulate that's hard to keep in solution and smells the way that I remember cadmium yellow and orange acrylic paints smelling.
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how helpful I'd be RE smells or stock solutions with the crude swatching, but I think that colors that look super dusty at first and then the pigments bloom with heat/acid a bit are likely ones that may be hard to make a stock with. I like firey jump! lol.

At what temp are you heating the yarn? STove top or oven? I tend to favor reds so I like the pinker swatch. Would love to see the reds. I tried using Jacquard (or Dharma) salmon and was surprised by how bright red it was.

I try to aim for just below a boil on the stove top, but sometimes things get a little hotter than that. I check frequently and adjust by feel mostly. I don't really use my oven often.
