This was great, thank you! I have some pastel blue wool shirts that I would never wear but I am thinking of either dying with extreme blue or brilliant blue. Might actually wear them then!

Dharma Sapphire is the one that wreaks havoc in stock solutions. It's my starter blue because I needed a truer, deeper blue than Peacock or Caribbean for my first projects, but maaaaan is it ever a pain to work with. I haven't tried speckling with it yet, so I'm curious if the grittiness may actually be helpful there!

I always mix the two up!! I like Jacquard's brilliant blue for stock solutions.

I was laughing watching you, 1/2 the time you used the yarn mop, the other times the paper towel. 😉 That's a LOT of blue.....my favorite bleeder is brilliant blue. 🤷

I always used the yarn mop for the dye on my fingers - but I then used the paper towel to dry off my fingers. And sometimes there was dye there. (I often cut out the space where I wasn't speaking, so that's why the towel may have shown up a bit more.)

Cross-referencing the info on Dharma's website and another site that listed ProChem dyes, Dharma's teal green, Jacquard's teal, and ProChem's Forest green are all the same dye pigment (acid green 25). Don't know about Paradise fibers though! (Don't mind me, I'm just deep diving into acid dyes instead of actually buying and using them 😶‍🌫) Thanks for making these videos, it's so helpful to see them all next to each other.

Ooooh, I thought brilliant blue from Jacquard didn't have an equivalent in Dharma, but turns out Extreme blue uses the same pigment (acid blue 62). Obviously this doesn't mean they're exactly the same because I have no idea what else goes into the making of these dyes, but it's fun to know. Hard to decide whether to get the Jacquard because it's less expensive out of pocket, or Dharma because you get more oz/$. I hate online shopping as a Canadian, that exchange rate truly works against us😅

Jacquard can be more cost effective once you buy more than just 1/2 oz for sure. And thank you! I rarely look up the actual pigments involved

sitting on ready for another round like this with different color families! I’m hoping to dye some tomorrow, but this has given me pause as to how I want to proceed.

EEk! I hope I didn't give you too many more choices. ;) I have done this with all pink and purples, almost with browns... I have a blog post on my website with a lot of different random swatches I've done.

@@ChemKnitsTutorials no but I don’t have a bunch of bare minis left, so I was thinking of taking this 100 grams of Sport weight Stroll and breaking it down into minis and dyeing each mini with a different dye from my stash so I have that as a reference (my brain just won’t remember how each color worked out later).

Super interesting test. It would be a wonderful process for a dyer. What different results would you gain by dyeing in 10gram (or smaller) mini skeins? Similar to what you do with the cups in pyramid to get a solid- Or dip dyeing the mini skeins to see how/if they break. I’m not a dyer but I like watching your process. Thanks.

If I were to take 0.1 g of each color and dye a 10 g mini, this would give us a better comparison for how much pigment is in each color (versus the temperature of the hue itself, if that makes sense.)

Love seeing all the blues!! My question to you is what’s the difference between ‘teal,’ ‘aqua,’ and ‘turquoise?’
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 2 жыл бұрын
in absolute terms? I'm not sure. lol. For teal I usually think of a deeper blue green. Turquoise I think like the stone, so more of a blue. Aqua also has a bit more green in it for me, not quite mint but a bit greener. But it's hard to say the first impressions people have when they hear a color name.

@@ChemKnitsTutorials I feel the same…it’s a very gray area. 🤣. I think I can ‘see’ the difference based on your description, though. I love them all!!

I developed my sense of these from a childhood using Crayola sets, so take it with that in mind. Turquoise is more blue (and the mineral comes in many colors, I have a lot of green turquoise jewelry). Aqua and Teal lean more green (less blue and more yellow). Aqua is less saturated (more white) whereas Teal has less white. I would classify the color of the jewelry stones I mentioned as 'Aqua'.

I’m want to dye a white silk chiffon gown a bright turquoise pool blue color, but I cannot decide which of the three brands to get… some of the bright blues look so similar in the video and I am not sure which one would work best for that particular fabric since it’s not yarn
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials Жыл бұрын
I don't have as much experience dyeing fabric, specifically not silk. There are 100% overlap in pigments between different brands. I don't remember off the top of my head but Dharma Carrib. Blue may have the same pigments as Jacquard turquoise. In general silks end up needing more dye than wool (in my experience) I personally like Dharma Carribbean blue over their true turquoise, if that helps at all.

Gun metal is the most confusing dye I've ever tried to use! It seems to change every time I apply it--I suspect it has to do with amount of acid and how long it is allowed to set before applying heat?

I'm not sure if it is an acid thing or a cold/hot thing. It is strange for sure!
