PART 2: • DYING MY HAIR PINK USI...
When I filmed this in March, I was feeling very reckless and decided that dying my hair with 16 different hair dyes was the best way for me to find the PERFECT shade of pink. Of course, I expected that things might go wrong and I could damage my hair slightly, but now 6 months later, I realise just how much I underestimated the long term damage. I did end up finding some good products thanks to this video, but now it's hard for me to get consistent colour on my hair when I dye it other colours.
This video is Part 1, and i'll post Part 2 tomorrow. In Part 2 you'll get to see me wash my hair 8 times, and i'll show you which colours lasted the longest, which damaged my hair and which products I recommend.
Since filming this video, i've also uploaded videos about dying my hair PURPLE, and you can see that the purple doesn't take in some places.

Hey dear, I love your videos, especially the Japan ones! I’m actually a hairdresser and all the people who were telling you that those colors will damage your hair are mistaken. Semi-permanent colors are essentially just pigment and conditioner, so even if you put them on your hair and never washed them out, they wouldn’t damage it. Although some lower quality products can dry out your hair (if they contain alcohol and stuff), they absolutely cannot damage it in the same way lightener or color can. Usually the worst case scenario is the pigment used will be of a low quality or is textile dyes which is a big no no. Unless one or more of the colors were actually demi-permanent, but the ones I recognize are semi permanent. I use professional color, but in lots of testing, I’ve found that the Keracolor brand and another brand called IroIro are the closest quality to the kinds that professionals get. I would 100% recommend sticking to those two any time you can’t make it to a hairdresser.

I wld love to give out some very helpful tips/tricks/risks about this topic by literally changing my hair color(w semi-perm ONLY) monthly for almost 2years now. So I am speaking with TONS of experience & watching THOUSANDS of hours of "hair/DIY dye/& the most important, experts just simply explaining details about hair I wldve NEVER even thought of"! I highly recommend this step, taking some time to learn. And that some expert videos CAN be just as helpful as a "dyed my hair at home= HUGE FAIL videos"(learning why or what they did wrong). A LOT of ppl dont think about their current color/shade mixed w the color they choose. This can turn a beautiful sky or deep blue into seaweed green. Its as easy and kindergarten & a color wheel(google one if you dont know 1). Her hair is perfect a level 8ish(the point is that it doesnt have TOO much of a yellow or orange tone in it). Most of these semi-perm, vibrant colors will ONLY show properly on lets call it a "blank canvas", an almost color-less blonde(level 9ish). But if your blonde is a "yellow" blonde then blue+yellow=green; &now u have green hair. This is why u see "blue and purple shampoos for blondes", back to the color wheel. The blue will take orange tones outta blonde bc they r opposite on the color wheel and so on w purple canceling yellow tones. If you have brown hair these semis might slightly tint ur hair or if its such a dark color on light brown hair itlI somewhat work. So usually any color besides blonde most ppl will bleach their hair 1st. Which is A LOT more dangerous to diy without consequences. I use colors over colors that'll work bc obviously i cant get away w bleaching every month. But all the damage I have f coloring is bc id always eventually HAVE to bleach. I ONLY use ARCTIC FOX colors. But most of the semis out there are actually CONDITIONER. So knowing that i tried once to keep my arctic fox in longer and accidentally fell asleep w it in!!!!! I WAS scared but when i rinsed my hair it was GORGEOUS. It was a TOTALLY dif more vibrant shinny color then in the past when i had used the exact same color! It stayed that way for over DOUBLE the time i was used to! W some(most) of these colors 1 or 2 washes will fade dramatically! This is just a tip to know you CAN leave it on longer for better color payoff and staying power. I also recommend training your hair w dry shampoo to NOT have to wash as often(there are GREAT youtube videos f experts on how to do this AND why it IS actually healthier to not wash as often like how shampoo is mostly for your scalp and conditioner can weigh down your hair, &shld mostly be used sparingly more on your ends, where u have more damage). Sorry this IS a lot of info and a super long comment. I just saw what was said about brands and wanted to help and give reliable info f my experience w Artic fox and a brand called Overtone. I 100% recommend either and both have THREE dif shades of pink. You can also add white regular conditioner w these to change a more electric pink into a pastel pink. Its just diluting the pigmented conditioner w an everyday white conditioner. Hope this helps someone!✌💗♒

Don’t waste money on pastel hair colours! Buy a vivid creme colour that you’d like if it was pastel and mix it with white conditioner to pastelize it (that’s all pastelizer is), then once mixed used a tint brush to swipe a little bit on some white paper towel to get a gauge of the tone. This way, you can also add some colour to your conditioner to keep your pastel fresh!

You can't listen to people, mostly, because every product will have a horror story to go along with it. Everyone's hair has gone through different stuff and there's a high likelihood that the horror story is from someone using it incorrectly. The best thing you can do is just look at ingredients. know what they are, and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Also to mention that some “horror stories” might be due to the person not applying it correctly, or with the pink turning green story, someone may have previously had green or blue hair, tried to remove it with colour remover/bleach, thought it was light though to colour pink when it actually wasn’t

Agreed! I’ve been dying my hair with my mom since I was 9 years old, and I’ve tried multiple brands in both blonde and red. Some of the brands I have used multiple times, but even with the ones I trust I’ve had the occasional issues. There has been multiple times that my mom and I used the exact same box dyes and one of us would have a bad time, while the other would have a perfect dye. We have different hair types; so I got to see first hand that it can really depend on the person for a lot of the common dyes!

No semi-permanent hair color is gonna really damage your hair. They're basically just conditioner with pigment in them. The permanent colors are the ones that can damage your hair because the developer is supposed to break open the hair follicle and deposit pigment. Also, $1000 to get color out of hair? Seems like they got ripped off.

@@kayypurrs2318 If it's the Colorista, they sell a deep indigo and even though it says semi-permanent, it's pretty stainy especially on bleached hair (Colorista also sells a bleaching kit). I think this is pretty standard for blues ("Splat" blue is also notorious for staining). When it washes out, it leaves (as many blue dyes do) a yucky greenish color; depending on how close to platinum your hair was and how damaged, it can be from "blonde competition swimmer at the end of summer" to straight-up swamp. I've used a couple of Colorista's lavender and purple dyes for over a year and the color washed out in less than a month, but I am terrified of the blues, even though the box is so pretty.

Semi-permanent hair dyes do not damage the hair as they only deposit color, they do not need peroxide so they do not need to lift the existing color to change the color of your hair. Personally, I do not recommend using pastel colors that are not for professional use because their opacity is not the best, it is better to use bright colors and mix them with a white-based conditioner to make them pastels. One part hair dye and 3 parts conditioner. Here is the recommendation of a hair stylist, greetings from Puerto Rico.

Hello! Industry professional here with a quick history lesson about hair dye in the US! I’m paraphrasing but essentially professional and box/drugstore dyes differ drastically due to laws put in place to protect salon/professional formulas. So as the professional formulas got better and better the box dyes stayed relatively the same which is why certain brands like olaplex could only be purchased with a license until recently. Many of the box dyes are damaging to the bonds of the hair because they haven’t changed the formula in 30 years, which is why so many of your viewers freaked out. It’s totally possible to box dye your hair well and take the necessary steps to take care of it, but it’s very very easy to damage it beyond repair. Do what makes you happy and please tip your stylists and colorists!

@@Ciinypie I've had a bad dye job once and essentially growing out/cutting off the botched parts is what has helped my hair. In the damaged parts, you could see a loss of curl pattern and just frizz instead, and also since that part of my hair that was damaged tangles more easily, it leads to more breakage when trying to comb/brushing it. This was just my personal experience though and I am not a professional, just someone who has tried lots of chemical treatments like hair dye, japanese straightening, and keratin treatments for a long time in the past.

HAIRDRESSER ADVICE these bright colours are called "direct dye" - its basically pigment suspended in conditioner. there is no developer, which is what changes the condition of your hair. however they only work on hair that has been bleached to a light enough colour for the pigment to cover - generally very light blonde, however dark purple/red/orange are best over a gold or orange base. bleaching hair should only be done by an experianced profeshional, and this is where the damage comes from. if hair is bleached unevenly, or if there was old permanant colour or highlight in the hair before bleaching, then the hair will be more damaged in some places and will hold colour differently in some places, leading to uneven colour fading. if your hair is bleached it needs regular treatments and haircuts. the damage doesnt just show immediantly when the hair is bleached, the damage will continue to get worse after bleaching because of brushing, swimming, washing with bad products, washing with hot water, not getting haircuts, using heat like blowdrying straightening etc, and just by existing. When you colour your hair with direct dye at home it is "safe" as in the dye itself wont damage your hair. to get an nice colour you need a lot of product, you need to saturate the hair evenly and leave it LONGER than the recomended time - I leave La riche directions on for 3+ hours wrapped in gladwrap. For Alex length hair, you would need at least 3 tubs, and i would buy a 4th just in case. you can buy a darker colour and dilute it with conditioner to make it pastel (cheaper than buying lots of pastel), or you can mix any of the shades together to create a custom colour. however DO NOT TRUST ANY OF THEM TO WASH OUT. some colours last better than others, i personally want my colour to last as long as possible so i choose brands that are known to last, however anything that says "x number of washes' is not a guarantee and your hair may not ever fade back to its perfect blonde. pink or pastel purple normally fades back to blonde, blue green red dark purple etc WILL NOT. if you are blonde, you want to stay blonde, and you go to a hairdresser, get them to TONE your hair a pastel pink/blue/purple what will fade blonde after a few washes, this is different from direct dye. My personal favourite is La riche, i like the colour options and the price is good in NZ, since I use two tubs every 6 weeks I try get an affordable option. Manic panic and artic fox are also great just more expensive. Wash hair with lukewarm water to make them last better. The supermarket ones like colourista and live are a horrible consistancy to work with and are likely to make your hair look patchy because they are difficult to apply, and there is barely any product in the box so you would need like 10+ boxes to do your whole hair so theyre not cheaper. Basically stay away from the supermarket options and stick to the ones sold in alternative boutrique stores or from a hair specialty store. Hope this helps!

Hairdresser here. What you’re saying isn’t necessarily wrong, but it’s actually a bit misleading. Technically speaking ALL direct dyes (which is what overtone is) don’t need to be put into lightened hair. The problem with that however is that they usually don’t stick in virgin hair very well because the hair cuticle is usually mostly closed. On top of that, the natural pigment in a persons hair will skew the color effect. You won’t get very much of a change from putting light pink on anything that’s darker than a light blonde. Also her hair is naturally red, which will not only affect the tone of the color, but also red hair is a lot more resistant to pigment in general.

this has probably been said a lot already but : - i think the live pastel didn't take because like colorista it's just crappy stuff, lots of conditionnerm barely any pigment, the silicone in it fills the porus hair and the colour doesn't grab everywhere - colour actually adheres better on dammaged hair, this is why very often, hair that's burnt at the ends retain colour longer than the roots - i know you want and like pastel colours but don't buy the pastel stuff, it honestly makes no sense and you are much better off getting a good brand of bright colours then mix it yourself. the pastel shades are just a diluted version of the intense one so you would not only save a lot but avoid ending up with a very diluted hair. | - pastel shades only work good on platinum hair, your hair was only a level 9 in this and it looked peachy from your previous colour, so it still holds quite a bit of yellow in. so either you need to have a very platinum base or go for a slightly less pastel version. - finally, i've tried many brand and so far the ones i've preferred are ; manic panic, la riché directions, arctic fox (not the pastels, those didn't work great, my hair was like yours, still not light enough), lunar tides (the petal pink only works on my ends which are litteraly bleach to almost white i also tried a brighter pink and a purple and those worked great). my current profile pic is a very washed out (2 month with washing my hair once a week only) of using manic panic deep purple and lunar tides plum purple at the roots and a bit on my 'fringe' hten plum purple and lychee pink (also lunar tides) on my mids, petal pink blended into the lychee pinks for the ends (lychee pink can only take on my very blond ends like said before) by now it's pretty blended and the camera doesnt pic all the variation but i loved every colours and i will defo redo my hair with those. i have very thick shoulder lenght hair and used almost 2 full pots, plus half of one and maybe a fourth of the petal pink, so i'd say almost 3 full pots for my hair (once again it's thick, like if i braid my hair it's as thick as a can of redbull)
@Alteusgirl

also the la riché looks more coral in the pot because they take into account that most people will not have a perfect white/platinum canvas so the colour is made to look a certain colour on the hair rather than in the pot

The Colorista washout is fine. All any of these dyes are is conditioner with pigment, there's no ammonia or hair damaging ingredients like dyes that open the cuticle to deposit colour. Your bleached hair is already in a state to receive colour. What can happen with these dyes is they stain the hair. My hair remained steadfastly teal/green after a trifecta colour including purples that had a green/blue base. Lifting the colour out was a nightmare but that's what was damaging not the colour or the staining. Part and parcel of using these sorts of colours. I use Directions a lot (La Riche, not La Fiche) and often just mix my own colours.

What a lot of people don't understand is that you don't only need to be careful while dying your hair (meaning: keeping it healthy, using the right products, etc.) You also need to have a good after-dye hair treatment, a good shampoo, conditioner or hair mask, you can impulsively dye your hair, yes, but you need to think of how to help it rapair itself afterwards.

Al'ethe if it’s with developer yes, but all these hair dyes are semi permanent without developer so it’s just a conditioner that deposits color on top of the hair strand (it’s why lighter color won’t show up on darker hair) the hair was most likely damaged from the bleach (and probably no proper after treatment)

Oh okay, RE: the discussion at the beginning. I’m an American. “Drugstore” hair dyes are hair dyes that come from places like Walmart for a couple dollars. I follow SEVERAL Australian KZbinrs and I’ve gathered that Priceline is much more higher end/quality beauty focused than Walmart is. Their heart was in the right place, they didn’t want you to accidentally ruin your hair, but they lacked the context to actually be able to speak on the products you used. However, I do think if you’d said Priceline the confusion would’ve been abated. I know why you said drugstore, but drugstore in America is pretty synonymous with “low quality”. I’m glad Australians don’t have to be afraid of the products in their drug store! Can’t wait to see your wildly pink hair!! 💚

The whole "drug store dyes damage hair" issue only applies to permanent dyes. Semi permanent dyes have zero developers in them and have no lift. They're basically vegetable dye in conditioner and are EXTREMELY safe to use. Not even remotely damaging, in fact, the opposite. You can literally leave them in your hair overnight for deep conditioning.

@@scandisnowgirl3696 I can attest that there are a few (looking at you Ion) that are a bit rough on your hair for some reason. It may be too acidic a base formula, I dunno, but that brand frizzed my hair. Most other semi permanent I've tried have been lovely, if sometimes very temporary. There is also the issue of some say semi permanent when they are actually demi permanent (or they get confused and buy the wrong one) which does use developer and has a wee bit of lift. The biggest problem with drugstore hair dye is that it usually uses what smells like a VERY strong developer which can be very damaging and also you have NO CLUE what colours or chemicals they put in them. Plus they usually just don't work very well.

I think everyone is gonna have a different opinion/experience when it comes to dying hair. Everyone's hair reacts differently so what one may say is great they other will say isn't. I know for myself I can't use anything with an Ash colour in it as it will turn my blond hair green. But it is always good to ask for opinions it gives you a chance to see everyone's thoughts on what is out there for products and how well they work.

Blonde hair turning green with Ash will happen with any clean blonde. Ash is only good if you have orange hair, as it neutralises it. For less yellow/grey hair, you need voilet undertones

This isn’t necessarily true. You have to bleach your hair before using any vivid or pastel vibrant colors, as a rule of thumb these colors aren’t made to go over different hair colors, you’re supposed to prep with bleach first so in this way, you’re all supposed to be starting from the same place.

This is true but there's definitely some hair dyes (i.e. stuff with sulfates n all those nasties) that NO ONE should use. I don't live in Australia so I couldn't recommend anything available over there, but definitely always look at the ingredients.

i recommend adding a touch of pink dye in to neutralize the green tones. all grey hair dye tends to lean and fade a bit green so it's not just you! also as with any semi-permanent dye, for best results, you should pre-lighten to a level 10 (bleach blonde) so that you don't get any muddiness.

I've been dying my hair for years and I've used arctic fox, manic panic, lunar tides, punky colours, directions and many many many box dyed and boxed dye has been the only dye that had messed up my hair. Using the semi permanent dyes have actually made my hair feel better. I feel the damage you're seeing in your hair is mostly from the bleaching before.

fellow Aussie here who dyes her hair consistently pink - I mostly use BRITE due to price, but have also used manic panic and artic fox with absolutely no issues (if that helps at all)

I second Manic Panic. It's a conditioning color, so you can leave it on as long as you want. (I know people that wrap their hair w plastic & sleep in it) so maybe that would help hold the pastel color better? Idk, I've only ever done bright colors, not pastel lol
@kimrharding
@kimrharding 4 жыл бұрын
@@ashleyb7139 I also use Brite Organix, and have for years. It has the best colour payoff and lasts the longest. I usually use the Purple but I have been using pastel pink lately. Just to note, if you ever want not pink hair, don't use their Pink, it will last until your hair grows out, I am not kidding. I had dyed other colours over it and 6 months later I bleached it and the pink was STILL THERE.

@@kimrharding manic panic atomic turquoise is like that lol I bleached my hair 3 times & tried to use peach/orange to counteract it....nope. It was still there haha I've never had that issue w pinks though...Guess it depends on the brand. I'll keep that in mind though bc Ive been wanting to try different brands

@@imogenkemp4626 I only slept w it on once, when I did my hair w Electric Banana lol I thought w it being a lighter color, it would help it stay longer & it did! Lasted about 3 weeks being neon, and another month or so just being yellow. Worked out well haha
