SNKs popularity has waned a bit (But so had Street Fighter till SF4) but during the 90s everything was about Capcom vs SNK with SNK being Capcom's biggest consistent competition till both fighting franchises almost disappeared in the early 00s.

Some more fun Street Fighter facts. Seth is often thought to be a reference to the infamous Shen Long rumor. The initial rumor stated that Shen Long could use every attack from every character, and what does Seth use? Sonic Booms, Shoryukens, spinning pile drivers and wall jumps, plus his Focus Attack looks identical to Urien's Chariot Tackle. He was also named after Seth Killian, the former senior manager of community at Capcom who ran the website, Capcom-Unity. Seth was also initially going to be named Cain, in contrast to Abel. Joe from the original Street Fighter was originally going to appear in Street Fighter Alpha 3 as an escaped convict, but was later replaced with Cody from the Final Fight series. During the intro for Super Street Fighter 4 and onward, Cody is seen destroying a brick wall with the Street Fighter logo on it, this is actually a reference to the intro of the original SF game, and by extension, Joe. Dee Jay was the only SF2 character to be designed by Capcom USA. Speaking of Capcom USA, they played a part in the name swap of the 3 Shadaloo members. Balrog was originally going to be named Vega, but Capcom USA thought it was a weaklings name and didn't fit the character it was given to, so they decided to rotate the names, the end result being what most players outside of Japan know today.

Here's two more bits of Street Fighter trivia. The long running manga series, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure has been referenced by several fighting games over the years including Skullgirls, Guilty Gear, and of course Street Fighter. Long time SF fans will know Guile and his iconic hairstyle, but did you know he got that hairstyle from Rudolph Von Stroheim? Both characters have a military history and are extremely patriotic in addition to the hairstyle, on top of that, some SF2 concept art mentions the heritage of two characters. Ken Masters, who's half Japanese, and Guile who supposedly has German roots, Stroheim was a German soldier. Fan favorite, Juri Han from Super Street Fighter 4 is often thought to have been inspired by the only female Jojo, Jolyne Cujoh as both share a similar hairstyle and chest wear. Juri also has the same "Ora ora ora!" battle cry as Jolyne when using her Super Combo, Fuharenjin(Wind Breaking Chain Blades). Decapre also has a taunt which is the same as Avdol's "Yes I am!" pose after he returns during the Cameo fight. And while these two aren't Street Fighter related, I may as well mention then. In the game Skullgirls, two characters pay homage to the villain, Dio Brando. Valentine can stop time and throw knives just like Dio, and Peacock can drop a steamroller on her opponent complete with Avery punching the steamroller until it explodes.

Did you also know The Street Fighter games borrow elements from the Anime & Manga series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure by Hirohiko Araki Lead designer of Street Fighter II, Akira Nishitani, stated in a interview with Polygon that the concept of Dhalsim's ability to stretch his limbs comes from the Ripple "Zoom Punch" technique. This is reconfirmed in the comment section of Dhalism's bio in the Street Fighter X Tekken Artworks artbook. In an interview with producer Noritaka Funamizu, he reveals that Guile's overall appearance was modeled after Jean Pierre Polnareff. Guile's page in Street Fighter X Tekken Artworks goes into detail, explaining that early designs included Polnareff's vertical, yet modest hairstyle, but at the time the sprites were being made for Street Fighter II, the pixel artist jokingly stretched Guile's hair out to the sides. The team found it amusing and decided to give him "the always distinctive Stroheim look" instead. Noritaka also explains that Guile's name was derived from Polnareff's archenemy, J. Geil, though this was apparently the result of a mix up from the development staff at the time. Rose was inspired by Lisa Lisa, her outfit is almost identical to Lisa Lisa's and both share a similar fighting style that consists of channeling energy into their scarves (Soul Power in the case of Rose and Ripple in the case of Lisa Lisa). Additionally, both characters like to take baths and Rose's stage in Street Fighter Alpha 2 is Venice, which is the same city where Joseph meets Lisa Lisa in the story. Juri Han has hair and clothes similar to Jolyne's. In addition, Juri has a spider motif and cleaves a butterfly in her official artwork; Jolyne has a butterfly motif and her Stand turns her body into threads and webs + she has spiderweb-patterned clothes. Juri even has the same "ora ora ora" battle cry as Jolyne. In Street Fighter V, the DLC character Seth has many moves based on older Capcom fighting games including JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Heritage for the Future. His Hecatoncheires move is based on Jotaro and DIO's Blazing Fists, with the EX version of the attack ending with Jotaro's Star Breaker as Seth yells "ora ora ora". Zigi Samblak I know how to play, and I've played some competitive shit in my time (which was about 3 years ago, but still...), but his mechanics are still broken. He just doesn't quite fit the game's moves, he's different from every other character (A LOT different, in a way that it sucks to fight him). He's easily spammable and can take large amounts of health from you very easily. No wonder Blanka almost isn't used in competitive play. I played Fei Long by the way.

And, if you do a Part 2, here are 2 little DYKs... 1) The reason Dee Jay's pants read "MAXIMUM" on them is because Capcom wanted a word on the pants, but didn't want to re-create the sprites turning left and right. The letters in "MAXIMUM" look the same if you flip them to the right or left. 2) Fans of Street Fighter have contributed much to the actual canon of the series, most notably relating to Sakura Kasugano, the "schoolgirl" fighter. The fan comic "Sakura Ganbaru!" (pardon my spelling), a fan comic series, has been taken (more or less) by Capcom as part of her official storyline. Furthermore, a character that was designed in this comic became a full-fledged character in the Street Fighter Alpha series - Karin Kanzuki.
