I'm surprised that no one brought up the fact that Dragon Quest was such a Japanese sensation, that when the third installment was released on a work day there, dozens and dozens of students committed hokey to buy it. Adding to that was students stealing copies from each other and attempted shoplifting of the game. Enix, at the time, who knows if this still applies, has promised the Japanese government to only release future Dragon Quest games on Sundays and bank holidays.

I don't particularly like either series. There are a few entries in each series though that I absolutely love for some reason, though. For me, I loved Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy X-2, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Dragon Warrior III, Dragon Warrior Monsters, and Dragon Warrior Monsters 2. Aside from those games though, I'm not a particular fan of either franchise.

Sadly here in Australia, I've never met another dragon quest fan, besides a friend who I introduced the series to. Nobody knows what I am talking about when I say "Dragon Quest is my favourite RPG series" then I say "Square Enix" then they say "Final Fantasy". I get hyped up whenever I hear someone mention Dragon Quest(namely Jon) because I barely ever hear people talk about dragon quest and even more rarely hear people as popular as Jon talking about it. I love Dragon Quest(especially 9. In fact I would go as far as to say it is my favourite game of all time).

4 years after this videos release, I can finally appreciate it. DQ11 is among my top 3 jrpgs of all time. Persona 5 and FF7 being the others. If you're on the fence about getting this game, just get it. DQ11 took me 120 hours to complete. I enjoyed every minute and although the beggining felt a bit slow, if just kept getting better and better. This is one of the few jrpgs that I know I'll be replaying again.

If you are new to RPGs in general, I would recommend Dragon Quest IX. It has character customisation, it is, in my opinion, one of the best looking Dragon Quests, and the menu system and the skills, spells and vocations stuff is less complex. If you own a Nintendo DS or 3DS, then I recommend this game.

Dragon Quest and its creator, Yuji Horii, have some of the biggest influences on gaming ever and still do. Here's some extra facts: - Dragon Quest came before Final Fantasy and is the first ever JRPG. It bridged the gap between Ultima, Wizardry and Portopia (Horii's own game) to create the JRPG we all know & love. - Dragon Quest pretty much created all the tropes we take for granted in modern games, even for non-RPGs - Yuji Horii's second game, Portopia, is also massively influential like Dragon Quest. It created the visual novel genre, inspired Zelda's existence, inspired Hideo Kojima to become a game designer and introduced dozens of tropes we take for granted today. - Yuji Horii wrote the infrastructure for Chrono Trigger's story, including the time travel. Time travel is a common theme in Dragon Quest as well. - Dragon Quest outsells every RPG that isn't Pokémon in Japan by an incomprehensible margin. DQIX sold 2.3 million copies in 2 days. ***** I've only played 4 and 5 on DS. 4 was alright, but 5 was absolutely fantastic. It's the game that got me into the series and I doubt any other game in the series will win me over as much as it. Not that they're all bad, it's just I feel it set the bar pretty high. A lot of elements I really enjoyed, like monster recruitment, a family system and a story that goes throughout the hero's entire life.

6:04 The reason for medals from Dragon Warrior 4 being in Dragon Warrior 3 for GBA is actually known. Dragon Warrior 1&2 were released on a single cartridge, and this was the plan for 3&4 as well. For reasons unknown to me (cost, size on cart, etc), that plan was cancelled, but the incomplete medal data from 4 was left in the game. The location (and other field data) is actually incomplete, and defaults to equipment characters, like the hat icon. I actually own a copy of Dragon Warrior 3 for GBA with all of these medals unlocked, AND I can save my data still. My friend had his cartridge break on him (he can no longer save), but he unlocked 26 copies of every medal in the game, including the Dragon Warrior 4 medals. If he trades any of the medals, it goes back to 26, essentially making infinite copies. We manually traded (cable link, back in the day!) every single medal to my game, and I unlocked the menus / medals in my game, but retained my ability to save. To my knowledge, I own one of the few (if only, who knows), cartridge with all of the medals, AND the ability to retain a save file. Anywho, figured I'd share, since it's a pretty neat / rare easter egg!

My guess is actually because DQIV had a release on PS1 and it wasn't a part of the Erdrick series (which is the first 3 DQ games) Enix was planning on releasing the PS1 remake of DQIV in NA, but it was cancelled due to Enix of America going out of business and Enix buying out Squaresoft.

Dragon Quest is one of my favourite game series of all time. I love old-school JPRG combat, I love grinding for the next level and piece of equipment (and thus having those levels and pieces of equipment really come with a sense of accomplishment), I love the incredible sense of adventure, I love the awesome character designs and hilariously unique monsters. Both series have their own merits. I prefer the art style of most FF games and the more mature setting of some of the games, but I do like Dragon Quest.

Dragon Quest is what I can only describe as the most by the book RPG series I've ever played, but that's what I love about it, no other series has given me such a powerful feeling of adventure, where the opening theme just screams adventure. Seriously, trumpets and adventure go together like pasta and meatballs.

The GameBoy Color version of DQ3 isn't the only time you are not allowed to use the name of the hero. If you try to enter "Erdrick" as your name in the NES version of Dragon Warrior 3 the game will scold you with a text box saying, "Input your name!" and will force you to re-enter your name.

+Did You Know Gaming I think the reason for the DQ4 medals in DQ3 on the GameBoy was because they might have initially tried to put DQ4 on the same cartridge, like with the DQ1&2 GameBoy port, but found out they didn't have enough space for it and just forgot to take the medals out. That's just my own theory, though.

It's not particularly unusual in the industry- Toriyama's done a good number of designs for games- Blue Dragon and Tobal No. 1 were other games he did the designs for. Similarly Kouske Fujishima of Oh My Goddess and You're Under Arrest fame did the character designs for the Sakura Taisen games, as well as several Tales games. The character you named your account after is one of his designs.
