This whole Dylan/Kelly cheating scandal only proved that Brenda's father was always right: Dylan was never for her. In the end, Dylan was always a womanizer, and 'bad boy' who loved his independence, he didn't truly belong to anyone, at least in his youth. Both Brenda and Dylan were way too young for a serious, dramatic relationship like theirs, and Jim made this point from the get-go: that Brenda has the whole life ahead of her, and giving her all energy to Dylan and to the relationship with him, which Brenda did- was pointless and was going to be painful in her future, and this is what happened. Jim always wanted to protect Brenda, period. Maybe he was too aggressive about it sometimes, but that's what fathers do, it's that simple. She was a teenager, a young adult but still way too young and immature to be this serious about romance. The reason why Brandon maybe got a little more freedom here was that Brandon was way more responsible out of the siblings, at least for the first 4 seasons of the show, and Brandon also wasn't as dramatic in his romantic relationships as Brenda was, thus he didn't create so many problems. Jim was always right about Dylan! - facts!

Right or not, young love is the most passionate and fun. Yes, there are bumps in it, but that is what it's about. Learning. Jim was a pain in the butt, if he was my dad we wouldn't be talking if he tried to come between me and whoever I loved. Thankfully, my dad liked and trusted my HS boyfriend and he was Dylan-ish. We had a lot of freedom and I am grateful to my dad for that. I didn't wind up knocked up as there ARE ways to prevent that. BUT that was NOT for Jim to decide it was for BRENDA to decide! Just like it was for me to decide. Young women do NOT belong to their fathers!! They belong to themselves. It's ok for parents to give unwanted and unsolicted advice, however Jim went WAY TOO FAR! Shannon has stage 4 metastatic breast cancer..theres no getting better..its incurable..im a psychologist at a hospital here in my country..ive had 4 patients pass away from this disease in the last 6 months..they lived between 1 year and 5.5 years after diagnosis unfortunately stage 4 isnt a funding priority. And stage 4 breast cancer patients only have a limited amount of lines of treatment..once one line ​no longer controls spread..they go onto the next line..unfortunately..either nothing works..the lines run out or their bodies become so weak and battered from chemo that their bodies cannot handle anymore treatments and its game over. @Kat-id7rz

To be fair they both cheated that summer, they both were tempted and kissed others. Brenda thought of running off with Reek lol and Dylan wanted to go further with Kelly. Had it been some random girl I would say they were equal, but it wasn't. It was Kelly. So that is just the ultimate betrayal, by Kelly and Dylan. I will say this, people get really mad at Kelly and I do get that but that summer it was she and not him that really was trying to stop things and constantly bringing up Brenda. Dylan on the other hand was more than willing to toss his relationship aside and tell Brenda so that he could keep being with Kelly. But in the end best friends don't do that to best friends so I guess the major L goes to Kelly! I just wish Brenda was able to see just how much Dylan was coming on to Kelly and everything he said!

Controversial opinion: Good for Dylan for not throwing Kelly under the bus. He was 100% right for not answering Brenda's question. Yes, that is a crucial piece of information she deserved to know, but it is Kelly's sole responsibility to disclose that information and no one else's. Leave that can of worms for another day. That said, Kelly should have at least given Brenda a heads up that she waa going on a date with Dylan after the break up. I can't believe there's an entire arc where Brenda and Kelly fight over Dylan, resolve their issues and agree to never fight over a guy again, only for Kelly to KEEP omitting that she was the summer fling and keep that lie going. Come on. Kelly had a long grace period.

I think her leaving him for the summer, even though he encouraged her to do so, was what really made him feel like he was disconnecting from her. She broke with him several times before, almost on a whim each time, totally breaking his heart, her family made him feel worthless, she sometimes made him feel like he wasn't doing what was right in life with school and so on, kind of projecting onto Dylan what Jim was doing to her, obviously because she was trying too hard to please both Dylan AND her father and she thought that by molding Dylan into what Jim would have wanted Jim and D would get along, only pissing them both off in the process. Notice the look she gives her dad at 1:26. They're of the same mind about Dylan. Brenda is more like Jim than Brandon is in many ways. She's judgmental like Jim, whereas Brandon has Cindy's open mindedness about everyone and is less judgmental, but always trying to find the silver lining. Kelly was just there at the right place and time, and D knew she had a thing for him because she said she tried to get a date with him after he got together with Brenda (her slumber party confession). Dylan is an abandoned boy, and the Walshes always gave him that "we're about to dump you for good any second now" feeling, and he just felt more comfortable with Kelly, who also came from a less-than-picture-perfect background than the Walshes, who were sometimes even bigger overachievers than Andrea, and I think Dylan left Brenda before she would be the one to leave him, a third time, and for good. That's why he was kind of rude to her when he and Kelly confessed the summer affair. "Don't we owe each other honesty" being kind of hostile. Brenda wasn't the best gf at times. She always kept a part of her "open for the possibilities" and always wondered aloud whether Dylan was right for her, even in their best of times. As for Kelly's motives, they're clear. She and Brenda are mutually jealous, but Kelly allows herself to cross lines with Brenda because she didn't grow up with a Jim and Cindy. Her boundaries are murkier than Brenda's.. it's not that she's bad, she's broken. That's why Brenda can never hate Kelly for real... Brenda understands Kelly's pain. This is why this whole storyline was so so painful. The layers and layers of all of these relationships were so meticulously crafted... this is why the big scene in the park which is coming up was so climactic and still sends shivers down my spine to this day.

umm did I miss something here? As Dylan said what about her French fling Rick (yes we all know the girl was Kelly- just saying). Like why is Brenda all bent out of shape? she did the same thing in the summer smh

I can see what you mean. Brenda and Dylan both cheated. However, Kelly and Dylan were the closest people to Brenda. Their relationship and bond wrecked Brenda for the last few years she was with everyone. She lost her spark and never really got it back. That’s why she poured herself into acting and moved away to London.

Brenda told him what had happened right away in the fling with Paris. Dylan did not, he lied for her for months and when he was honest with her. He still lied, like saying the girl he was with wasn't important. Which is a total lie bc if my best friend was fooling around with my bf I think it's important for me to know. Plus atleast Brenda didn't cheated

@@sailorsister211 Dylan didn't come clean because it seemed like he didn't want more drama. It's was getting abit too much with Jim and Brenda running away for him. And we all could tell he wanted Kelly and was pushing Brenda way. Not saying it was right.
