Considering they are only 5 years older than the Class 390 UK West Coast Pendolinos and from the same manufacturer, its astonishing that from the look and feel there seem to be 25 years between them. The interior looks more like that from a 1980s train. Wikipedia says they were refurbished, which seems extraordinary. Even HSTs seem more modern.

The ETR485 was basically the same model as the ETR460 from 1993, with different electric systems. In that time you can clearly see Fiat ferroviaria were still figuring out how/what a hst should look/be. In the timeline you see the development . In 1988 with the ETR450 clearly be inspired on the original 1960s shinkansen bullet train ; 1993/1997 The ETR460 & ETR485. In 1995 the ETR500 which 'looked better' and still is use in refurbished version with 25kv engines in stead of 3kv. And from 2006 the ETR600 series (after the Alsthom take over).

7-8 years ago I had the chance to get a ride on this train on the AV line between Naples and Rome where it maintained a sustained speed of 250 kmh, and I have to say that it was very very conformable, not even a hint of a bump, absolutely nothing like in this vid, one of the most comfortable high speed trains, together with the ETR 500. That was the last time I took it, so idk about now. I onestly think that being pretty old they just abandoned this things a little... concentrating on the newer trains, that's pretty sad tbh nice vid as always btw

I travelled from Rome to Lecce and the Lecce to Milan in this train type in early summer 2019 - spending a total of around 13 hours on them. The trains were full as it was pre-CoViD. Ironically I too had a 15 minute delay on the single section crossing the spine of Italy on my journey. Whilst I agree with most of your comments about these sets I think you are just a bit harsh. It’s true that compared against the brilliant top league trains found in Italy these don’t show up well but comparing against 2nd tier trains in almost every other country they aren’t so bad. They just emphasise how good the other Italian high speed trains really are.

Hi Dylan. I live in Bari and I often take that ride to get to Rome, so I perfectly know what happens in that Trip. Although the bumpy ride on the old etr485 which is becoming very common on those trains (I really don’t know what’s happening!), the real problem is the old “internal” Caserta-Foggia line as you could see during the time lost for the coincidence. At the moment, a new one is under construction (they will need about 5 years to be finished, just imagine how many galleries they have to build; practically, we will have a new “Firenze-Bologna direttissima”), but the old one is just embarrassing about speeds: consulting the line papers, you will find that only the “Rango P” trains can go faster Than the ordinary ones in “Rango C”. The result is that the tilting etrs, just like the etr485 (or the Frecciargento etr600, the only other pendolino train operating in Italy, which have a top speed of 250km/h), have the “rango p” spec and they are the only trains that can go faster in that line (where they have just 2 stops, Caserta e Benevento). If you take the same trip with the Frecciarossa 1000 which goes up to 300 km/h (just a couple of them per day took that trip from Milano/Torino to Lecce), you will find that the same trip is covered in the same time as the frecciargentos do (or even in 10 minutes slower). Also on the Adriatic line there is the same “rango” problem, but we talk about 10 km/h, just not a problem when you ride almost at 150-180 km/h. I’m pretty sure that also the trip in Italo on the same itinerary was not so good (I’m not talking about the experience onboard, you know): talking about ride time, it needs about 20 minutes more than the fs pendolinos, and it cannot be justified just with the 3 additional stops that does on the Adriatic Line between Bari and Barletta. As a personal opinion, I prefer the etr485 seats, but the ride comfort and the experience is much better on the Italo evo or on the frecciarossa 1000 (even though in economy you can’t recline the seat on the last one, grrrrrrrrrrrrr >:( ). I’m a fan of your videos. They’re great, I’m always excited about your reviews. Well done!

What are the actual speed limits for Pendolino on Caserta - Foggia?
@trifonematteocantacessi64142 жыл бұрын
@@maxart3392 for the first 30 km of line from Foggia, there’s a new line which let the trains go up to 200 km/h without restrictions. Then, for the next 130 km, the maximum speed for the pendolinos is, in absolute, 150km/h but just for 15 km in total. Then, the speed is between 90 and 140 km/h. These are infos that I found on the RFI line sheets online on their website. The new line, which is under construction, will be optimized for traveling up to 250 km/h.

No Dylan, you're not being too harsh: that whole line is just subpar, and paying a high-speed price for a low speed travel on an old train is just not fair. On a positive note tho, the Bari-Naples line is being rebuilt, with the completion of the new section through the Appennines expected for 2026. You'll be able to do that same trip in approximately 3 hours. As a Barese, I kinda laughed when you said that the station is far from the city centre, cause for us the city centre is exactly the area around the station. I know, it can be weird for a tourist. I get what you were saying though: it's not really close to the old town and to the sea. Oh and by the way, it is fully accessible, with lifts at every platform and escalators. You were just in the old underpass that no one uses because there's a newer, shinier and larger one on the right side of the main building.
@giumas16932 жыл бұрын
Well, to say that the whole line is subpar seems to me to be an exaggeration. I remind you that between Bari and Foggia, even if the line is not at high speed, it is still well equipped and already allows 180 km/h and upgrading works are planned to bring it to 200 km/h. The High Speed line already exists between Caserta and Rome and, as you said, rebuilt works are underway on the line from Foggia to Caserta which will have a maximum speed of 250 km/h and will be completed in 2026. Naturally the Pendolino ETR485 is a somewhat dated and would need more maintenance, but I believe that it will gradually be replaced with more modern stock with the opening of the new line and in any case already today between Rome and Bari, in addition to the Frecciargento services, the Italo services also operate. So why always complain, as we Italians do?
@scipionedelferro2 жыл бұрын
I think the biggest disappointment is that the high speed experience was worse on the new high-speed line from Caserta to Rome. That track is perfect and modern, it is just the outdated train was not properly designed to mantain 250 Km/h speed. That's beyond old furbishing or small seat.
@maxart33922 жыл бұрын
Nice report as always. I did this route about 18 years ago in opposite direction and the train was basically the same, maybe even the same unit (as there was no HS line between Rome and Naples yet, it took the coastal line, which was then the main line, to just before Caserta, making it a somewhat unique experience, travelling some time along Tirrenian coast and some time along Adriatic on the same day and even on the same train). But yes, I think you were a bit too harsh. The train is 25 years old and I believe it hasn't been refurbished at all - you can still see the iron-like ornament on the overhead racks which is part of its original layout, so it's actually good to see that everything is still in working condition. Probably this train is due to refurbishment or/and moving to Greece. And while it may be rocky on the HS line, its tilting ability is invaluable between Foggia and Caserta, for the time being the only way to connect two major cities like Bari and Rome in reasonable time. Frecciarossa wouldn't make it in the same time. Everything comes at a cost. As to the delay, I think it's simply unavoidable on the single track lines as soon as they become a bit busy.
@EliasSchmid002 жыл бұрын
What you say definitely makes sense - you explained why these problems exist pretty well. But IMHO that doesn't mean it's OK to not keep their rolling stock in decent condition or not expand single track lines that are overly busy... I don't think he was too harsh, uncomfortable and late trains aren't really acceptable - especially if the reasons are down to a lack of investment. It puts you in a bad position very quickly as people will stop using the line and you'll have even less money to invest so service gets even worse etc. etc.
@justsamoo34802 жыл бұрын

I would care somewhat if the interior looked shabby or worn-out. I would care very much if it was dirty. But I do not care at all if it looks out-dated. Much more important are: the comfort of seats; the amount of leg-room; space for luggage; the provision of facilities such as food, wi-fi and decent toilets; the quality of ride; the ability to shade windows; the placement of seats in relation to windows; etc., etc. On those counts, it seems that these trains are of variable quality, and in some of them not particularly good. But I doubt I would find them "awful".

They had no problem with our Scottish vaccination passes (both my wife and I have had both doses and a booster) But the American couple behind us had more trouble as they could only prove they'd had 2 vaccinations and didn't have a negative PCR test from their arrival. So they had slent basically the journey from Venice to Florence (they were going to Rome) trying to coble together the evidence that they met the Italian legal standards to be permitted to travel. I will also say - we also traversed the Rome - Naples high-speed line. But in the other direction, and on an .italo AGV. It was smooth, comfortable and well airconditioned. To get to our hotel, on the Sorrento peninsula, however - involved a trip on the 'Circumvesuviana Railway' which . . .vill be honest I'd LOVE to see your take on. Cheap? Charming? A quaint narrow guage suburban metro? These were imported from The Netherlands and Belgium when the "Fyra" service flopped - major technical difficulties of the train itself being the main cause. It would be interesting to see what Trenitalia has made of these sets. Rather coincidentally, at 10:30 an Alstom Coradia Stream is on show, which will be the Fyra, but under the name of NS (Dutch Railways) only and at 200 km/h instead of 250. Cheers! I am getting concerned because Trenitalia brought ETR 475's to Greece. Still to be introduced because they don't have sanders, but there is a big conversation for these trains that were withdrawn from the Transalpino service...

I have to say I'm a little ambivalent about the standard of rolling stock and more interested in the scenery from your journey across Italy. That said, the interior of these units does look a tad drab. Rather nice for a February day in the northern hemisphere. A chuckle from me when you mentioned Foggia's claim to fame, as well as that of Beneventa. I wonder what might be growing alongside or under the tomatoes. The only witch hunt that would be relevant today would be decent humans putting the tyrant of Moscow and his cronies out of business and treating them to a working holiday in deepest Siberia. I do hope you prayed for World Peace at St.Peter's Square in Rome. I'm sure you had a quick prayer as you passed within the line of sight of Mount Vesuvius, hoping it didn't go BANG as you went past. Thank you for this insight into a TransItalian rail journey.

Unfortunately the ETRs 460/485 (Identical to the Old 480) have always suffered high speeds, they always had problems in the Undecarriage in general, creating enormous vibrations at speed, and that's a shame, because the Pendolino Tecnology first used by the now defunct Fiat Ferroviaria in the ETR450 was really good for the time and worked well, the old 450s had to be scrapped because they didn't have spare parts anymore, but they were so gorgeous and reliable, apart for the tilting capability, here in Italy the Pendolini can legally go higher speeds in turns than standard Class C Locos and Units I would love if Trenitalia Purchased other Pendolini to remove this flawed Units from service.

Oh I'm so happy we got rid of the these Critters in Switzerland( you may have travelled on one of the the ex Cisslpino units looking at the single arm AC pantho).. I got seasick in them.. the vibrations were horrible during the ride..and technically speaking a nightmare... unreliable.. often late.. .. and the interior looks pretty much as it did in 2010.. There are older Trainsets that have fared far better...

its a old train Dylan ,least it was cheaper than what uk has too offer ,and seemed plenty off available seating !
@avgeekinfotainment77762 жыл бұрын
I assume, the bumpy ride is related to the fact, that these ETR485 are tilting trains. The distance between the rails and the floor of the coaches is determined by technical aspects, thus limited and you have to fit your wheels and bogies in there. On a tilting train the tilting mechanism eats up quite a bit of that space, which then lacks for the suspension (or rather the way the body of the coach can travel within its springs), resulting in a rougher ride. And this is becoming more and more notable the faster you go. It's a general drawback of all tilting trains; they are bad at high speeds. However with the newer ETR610 it seems like they sortet out that issue a bit.
@TheSpotify952 жыл бұрын
Nah, you're not being too harsh. Only one plug socket per pair of seats? Seats that have very poor legroom? That looked like, if it was 2+2 instead of 2+1, a standard class product sold at first class rates. And those trains could certainly do with a refurbishment. Not good if you ask me!

Honestly the pendolino 460-480 series did not go down in history to be the best. Having said this, that shakings at 15:30 are strange. Maybe the train is near a major manteniance

I haven't travelled on these trains, so cannot comment on their riding qualities, but for me the worst trains for poor riding, are Japenese designed units. The class 800 unlts on GWR can be dreadful at speed, and I remember travelling on the Souuh Eastern high speed Javelins when new, and the ride was alarming! I haven't travelled on the Frecciarossa 1000, but I am sure that such a beautiful train, could only have a beautiful ride!

At 3:10 you said “Italo EVO” ETR 675 are tilting trains That's false, they're part of pendolino family but they don't tilt, like the polish and the Chinese ones

You must be a really fast walker Dylan, in a few steps you went from the train station to St. Peter's Square, and in a couple more to the Colosseum! Looks like the trip was uneventful and drab, hope your stay in Rome compensates for it!

I had always thought the Frecciaargento was really good but did not realise there were different types. This Pendolino service definitely a notch lower than the Frecciaargento services run between Rome and Venice for example.

It seems that they have abandoned these trains (460, 485 and 610) by making little and poor maintenance. They should be refurbished...these trains still have so much to give.

What I don't quite understand is that if you arrived at Benevento 17 minutes early but was subsequently held up by 15 minutes shouldn't you still be 2 minutes early? Unless of course they held you at Benevento for the scheduled departure time!

There are plenty of reasons to arrive early but none to depart before time. That would cause people to miss they're train.

I think you are a bit too negative considering this is a lower-grade high speed train travelling mostly on non-high speed lines. The interior looks quite alright, seats are probably more comfortable than on most UK trains, especially in second class. I can't comment on the ride quality from my own experience, but I found Spain's S120 you reviewed recently, to be extremely bumpy, while you descibed it as "silky smooth". And that train also looks much more outdated (while you called it "smart-looking").

Yes, most people know this. And did you know that it's illegal to mis-identify yourself as a law enforcement agent, whether on KZbin or anywhere else. I'd recommend changing the BTP user ID as, if someone reports you (I haven't BTW) you could face serious trouble.

I think those trains are really authetic and I like them. Yes they getting old, But they show the times of italians High speed history. The price is less then half of that you would pay in Germany fo a first class ticket and trains aren't that much better here.
