Please note that in this demonstration, the coach is not running a training session. He is showing a number of different drills in quick succession for a group of coaches. So he doesn't have time to focus much on the coaching points. It's more a way of showing coaches how the drills are set up and run. The coaches could then go back to the training field, run the drills and implement coaching points to make sure their players learning what the coach is putting across.

I watched the first drill. Some basics were met. There was a significant issue for me with this drill. That issue is for a defensive drill defenders were not directed to control the opponent. Force the opponent left/right they ended up just running at the opponent and not being in control. Trying to defend 360 degrees, moving too much, falling over. The drill teaches erratic and reactive defending. The focus is on speed, staying low, turning (all good) but half defenders ended up completely twisted...............As a defender you MUST try and control where you opponent goes. He has the ball, he has the advantage and if you just engage and chase him if he's good you have a problem................You could improve this drill be getting defenders to force opponent left left or right and teach them how to control and manage space. You can see they're moving and twisting far too much. Control distance, control space, manage your opponent. These kids defend wildly and engage and turn too often

I think for the sole purpose that this is supposed to be a coaching video, the players should have been through this session before so there's less explaining of what's going on. Also, you can see the attacking players change their dribbling tactics based on what the coach told the defenders to focus on.

@@darrenjeffers9153 Great points. I think the most common method of the last point is having 5 points given for dribbling through a central gate, and only one point for a side gate.

@@Activsoul I'm not against points based scoring. I think its possible to over-control and restrict development. For example I doubt a young Messi followed a structured school style point system. It's more likely he was an artist seeking to create new skills as opposed to a soldier style drilling with points and uniformity

Generally, Coach Walker has covered a few defensive principles. His model players are generally keeping their attackers in front of them. So what I see on this 1 v 1 practice are: track, close down, show in or out, delay (not enough), sporadic tackling, and some intangibles. I like his exercise going to goal and the counter goal. However, defending goal side is fundamental to effective defending. I would probably use Coach Walker’s suggestion to step into between the ball and the man to win ball only if support was behind in case my opponent got behind me and resumed ball touch going to goal. I teach my players defensive fundamentals using small-sided game situations to stimulate their competitive juices. Generally, basics that my players have to constantly work on are: track, close down, delay, show in or out, stand player up, eyes on ball, keep player in front, listen to mates directions, be patient, don’t buy fakes and feints; among other skills, if support is behind, increase pressure (which may include Walker’s suggestion to box player out) and look to win the ball. B Licensed.

This is a bad session. First, determine which is more important, forcing the player to the right or left, or forcing him to his weak side. Second, once you deny whichever side you want to deny, then anticipate movement towards where you're funneling him and only then can you step slightly ahead of him, where you get part of your shoulder on some part of his chest as you're both moving toward the ball -- basically you want the body contact to happen only as you're both moving towards the ball he played forward. You can't cut across his body because that's a foul, but you can impede him -- shoulder to chest -- as you're both going for the ball. It's a little bit of art in learning just how much you can get away with, but it's not difficult to figure out. What's important is that your forward foot is outside enough of the attacker that only a wide move would work to get around your lead foot -- but it's so wide that you can easily recover and he's not going forward on you. 90% of the time, if you learn to deny the strong foot and anticipate his move forward to where you're funneling him, you will paralyze an attacker and take the ball away.

He also didn't cover how to properly stagger one's feet and be able to pivot and shift as the ball moves. He had mentioned in his lead-in that sometimes a player will need to take a softer angle on the ball, I wish he would have covered that with the players that were demonstrating. All of them went directly to the ball, giving the attacker the advantage to then beat them at pace. Pressuring them from the side like that their angle needed to be much softer.
@penssuck6453
@penssuck6453 7 жыл бұрын
Plus, what is he teaching them -- if not to foul -- at the 3:20 mark? You can't step across a player like that, raising your arms to slow him down. You cannot slow a player down using your arms, unless your arm is half-bent in front of your own body, not out like you're being crucified. The whole problem with his first exercise is that the defenders are coming at the ball carrier from an odd angle. Why would they be so far off to the side when the ball carrier wants to travel between the lines (towards us as we watch the video)? He should have had the ball carrier travel in the direction in which the defenders were coming, at least giving them the right approach to the man they were going to mark. Honestly, there's just so much wrong with what he's showing them. I got the impression that he's never played the game, let alone defended.

Horrible defending: 1. Don't run full speed at the defender. You have to pace yourself in order to not get beat by a burst of acceleration 2. You must wait till he goes into a direction and the ball goes a little far to stick your shoulder and arm between him and the ball 3. You have to have some sort of calm rhythm in order to keep coordinate and prevent yourself from falling or tripping 4. Force him to a side , usually away from goal or the middle

From my own experience, defending as well as attacking or anything regarding to soccer is the speed you take decisions and how good are those decisions. Quality decisions comes with experience. But the timing of decisions is something you need to constantly improve. That is, dont be reactive, either defending or attacking. Being reactive will put you in disadvantage against the other doing the decision. And the one doing the decision is the first one who make it. For example, if the defender takes the initiative, he can feint some tackles, leading the attacker to a non-desired movement. Most likely moving toward the unwanted corner in the field. Then the defender can constantly feint the tackle till the attacker be forced to make a mistake or give up the ball. On the other side, if the attacker, instead of allowing the defender to approach takes an offensive movement, the defender gonna be pressured to react, and most likely be beaten as he wont react fast enough. So, defending or attacking, be the one taking the decision by deciding fast, preassuring the oponent, making them to react, and react according to what you want.

Just watched this video, 5 years after it was uploaded lol. There's a fair few things that could be improved upon here... and I've seen it said numerous times in the comment section. However my points are: 1) You're coaching defenders coming in only from the right. Not the left nor head on. Maybe it was covered but it was in another video ? 2) These defenders are twisting more times than dancers in strictly come dancing. They are all off balance... they should be dictating the attack. Showing the attacker ONE way and only ONE way. Using the front arm as a measurement, if you can touch the attacker with your finger tips you can step in and out with your FRONT foot whilst maintaining balance. Also... they're defending like crabs, close those legs. 3) When it progressed to the 2v1, the defenders tracked the runner after the 1-2 from the side? He should've arched his run blocking off the return pass, showing the left sided player down the line and inviting the 1v1. 4) I didn't hear the 3 D's. Delay the attack (Jockey), Deny the space (step closer to the attacker), then defend (tackle or force a mistake, e.g heavy touch). I only saw the defender recover from the right, and then frantically rotate trying to hypnotize the attacker with pirouettes. I don't like to be too critical, but for a video to have 1.2 million views which therefore would have vast influence on coaches, I'd of expected a Pep Guardiola like session.

Coaching players to defend like this will have1 of 2 results 1) The defender will be skinned as the attacker will see the defender coming a mile off 2) The defender will foul the attacker conceding a freekick or penalty. Aim is to quickly close down, then by going side on force the attacker inside or out depending on where the space is. Then be patient keep focused on the ball and wait for the right moment to make an attempt on the ball.

In the first exercise 1 v 1 you have missed one of the single most important things. The first defender needs to put their name on it, for example "Johns in". The reason for this is that it stops 2 players going in on an attacker and secondly it also applies mental pressure on to the attacker with the ball. The name on it call is absolutely vital, the resulting "rushed" pass from the attacker can be pressured into being poor or the attackers 1st touch can be pressured from the call.

As a coach there are a lot of things that he needs to point out when defending. You gotta start with teaching these guys how to defend before they can be put through these drills. They're not follow the basics... travel with the ball yes... but as a defender going one on one i wanna get there as fast as i can get his head down to the ball, as im going towards him im forcing him into one direction, its important to control where the defender is going... Its all about being patient, bully the attacker and force him to give up the ball dont try to take it from them every time, Work smarter. Dont dance with them either, Hold your space if youre forcing them left keep pushing them left if they turn back peddle and fight for the space keep pushing them out. Just my 2 cents,

I think this was really good advice about stepping across a player once he has shifted the ball to one side ..But once he done the demo the players just started to sprint towards the attackers without thinking about holding the attacker up first and making him shift the ball to one side so they could step in the attacker’s just started to knock the ball by the defenders because they were jumping in ...I think he has the right idea just didn’t notice that the defenders completely forgetting about standing up the attack Also I don’t think people understand this was a session to show some coaches drills not an actual session to progress the players ..As he says just showing some drills were not coaching for perfection here.....

This session is all wrong. 1. His demos are teaching the defenders to turn their back on the attacker. 2. It is not relatable to real game play (defenders winning the back and going straight down the middle of the pitch to score into a ssg goal. 3. Nothing was mentioned or coached about jockeying the ball and not diving in (which happens numerous times) 4. He coaches that there "needs to be contact at some point" - actually a lot of good defending is holding up the play and forcing the other team back. 5. HArdly anything about showing sides and forcing the player one way, apart from in the beginning. The one good thing he did say in the last part was "see the player, see the ball"

phillip lahm did a video where he does emphasize turning your back on the defender in recovery runs. Also while it looks bad what he really wants is for you to get between the ball even if its not 100% shown. 2. you may not go down the middle but the goal simulates a midfield option. 3. fair point. 4. often times and most times there should be contact and as you see in the epl there almost always is.

Unfortunately, the guy does not have good examples. These kids are terrible but the principles are generally correct though. 1) close the space, 2) arc your run to force the attacker toward his weak side, toward the sideline, or toward help (depending on situation), 3) stay on your toes, angled sideways with your weight on your back foot, 4) delay/pressure as needed to cause the attacker to make a mistake, and 5) dispossess. He is trying to teach correct hip and body positioning by instructing to make contact and correct diving in. Also, like he said, with a small weak touch to either side, you can easily step in front and possess the ball yourself as a defender rather than poke it away for them to just have a go at it again.

He knows all the catchy phrases, but he's not teaching them anything. Well, he's teaching them a bunch of wrong things. Don't add "a transitional component" if they can't even do the basics. There's the expression "You must learn to walk before you can run," and the guy at 2:25 literally cannot walk yet. He doesn't know how to position his body with respect to the attacker, he doesn't know how or when to shuffle his feet, and he doesn't know how to lay off or when to close down. I'd be amazed if he took in that his attacker is right-footed -- because he got beat that way...even before he comically tripped himself. You should be thinking about several things with respect to the man you're defending. One, is he faster than I am? Two, is he right-footed or left-footed, or (the much less common) ambi? Three, how much space does he have to work with? Four, am I trying to steal the pass, crowd him upon receiving it (maybe preventing him from turning comfortably), or simply containing him once he receives the ball? The answer to the last question will determine how far off of him you should play. If you can't get to him before he can receive and turn on you, don't get too close too fast, or he'll simply poke the ball past you and run by. If he is faster than you, either you had better get the steal or be in time to not let him turn. Otherwise, absolutely funnel him towards his weak foot and give him plenty of space, hopefully allowing you to get help. If you're faster than him and relatively far away from goal, then you should crowd him whenever you can, because even if he gets past you, you can catch up and defend again. And of course different situations call for different strategy: for example, on a break-out, do not let him turn. Foul him if you have to. Anyway, there's just too much to comment on. I always appreciate people who take the time and trouble to make these videos, but it's fair to critique them when they're teaching bad technique.

lol, i did this naturally since i was young, it just came out natural, its hard for ppl to pass me, im fast, im a good dribbler so i can anticipate my opponent moves , stay low, the lower u get the better, do what the coach says in the video, and then fake a tackle to see what he is made of, if hes fast and good, keep your focus, try more fake tackles, until u get a chance that u can trust to tackle him, and when you do, be VERY AGGRESSIVE ABOUT IT, always be aggressive when hes too good, number 1 rule with great players defending! If hes not a good dribbler or hes slower than you, then u can be a little bit reckless. tho if u have the talent for defending, u can read ur opponent next move, u will actually read his patterns and in no time u will figure him all out. but if the player is very very creative u will have to be strategic , and use aggressiveness when needed.

I've been told that you shouldn't come in with the instep but the studs(only when confident you will win it as it's risky) and the inside... So considering you seem ready to give info, do I mainly come in with inside, is it true I never use instep, and is it ok to use studs, even when clean? Oh, and also, should I watch the ball, or the hips

Players are terrible so adjust the coaching and drill..play this drill without a ball and let both players run forward side by side and execute the drill. Keep in mind to tell them it is best to use the wrist and Palm of your hand to defend the player. Always keep the whole arm firm and stiff

I would be interested to see if this kind of coaching clinic would still run today. Seems like he’s panicked to get key points across about a specific drill.. awkward watch. We can only hope that people are sensible enough to register that these are his ideas on how to defend 1v1..

I hate to pile on, but it's like this coach has never played the game before. His way of "cutting a player off" is a foul. Also, your defensive stance should still be somewhat in front of the attacker, at least so he can't just dribble straight past you. The whole point of a defensive stance, with your lead foot being slightly wide of the attacker, is so that any movement around you to that side will be a lateral movement, which would allow you to pivot with your non-lead foot and keep the attacker in front of you. The wide route the attacker must take to get around you is what allows you to sit on and slightly cheat towards the side you're funneling him towards.

If I was just better with my feet I'd be a pretty good soccer player.

This coach obviously never played defense. He is stiff and is asking the defender to approach the ball the wrong way. The run should be curved so the defender can end up up facing the attacker but not giving him the attacking lane. The defender should try to force the attacker to ward the support or toward the sideline away from goal.

The word is Habitual Okay so I only watched about maybe half of this video. One thought here, practice makes permanent. My training at S.S.F.C. is based on my book called, U Can Do It !!! New Advanced Skills. It's a self help guide to successful soccer development. This training needs more repetition.

No problem with the drill. Use it all the time teaching 1v1. Have a major problem with what he was telling them and way way too many coaching points. He stopped and talked more than the actual drill was ran.

These player's are too old for this. Unless they are there cuz they are behind? And this coach trains amateurs? Player's at this level just need technical and play. If your that age and need to learn hand's on by this guy how to defend or approach someone receiving a ball and closing down... your just lacking the basic knowledge of play.. Team defending is different. But as a player and at this age. The need solid training sessions. Not cones, long speeches, stopping and going, that amazing facility and turf field. But it help's I guess
