Dynon has introduced a terrific little portable EFIS called the D1 Pocket Panel. AVweb's Paul Bertorelli took it for a spin in his Piper Cub and says the airplane is now IFR certified. Sure it is...

thanks for the excellent production showing this remarkable little gadget! think that does make damn good sense "just in case" with a failing vacuum system. think $1300 is worth saving your life.

Sure wish I'd had one of these when I was flying (before the heart attack, which voided my medical for life).

very nice, shouldn't be too far into the future before this portable stuff starts getting some degree of certification from the FAA.

Gee's Paul, with that, the Garmin 796 and an I-pad with Fore Fight IFR, you could fly IFR in the J-3, the question is why would you want to. I would fly some practice approaches just because. After all there is the why yes I flown an ILS in a J-3. We as pilots do need bragging rights from time to time, and something to talk at the local hanger sessions. Kidding aside, I can see where that would be a fine thing to have.

Hey Paul, I'm building my own experimental plane called a MiniMax soon...I'm finding instruments to be insanely expensive, and if I were to just invest in this unit and use it as a replacement for a bunch of individual instruments, I could save a lot of money. Would you say this unit is reliable enough to use alone? I can't justify spending $1400 on something just used as a backup.
