A few years ago my friend contracted typhoid from eating street food in Burma. She was critically ill and was medivacced to a hospital in Thailand. She came through it , but it was touch and go at one stage. I guess it the risk that you take in developing countries.

It is. We actually did a typhoid vaccination previous to leaving to keep ourselves as safe as possible. That was one of many vaccinations we had to get. I'm glad your friend is ok now! Scary stuff!

I wonder why they keep your passports I would be nervous

It was common practice when crossing the border there. The government doesnt want you leaving the little town on the border without an official guide. They think by holding your passport, you will not leave the immediate area. I think we were told that you needed to hire an official guide to leave. There is still some fighting going on in Myanmar and it can be pretty unsafe in areas.

Did you guys have a 30 day visa and you extended that there? Or was your visa completely expiring and you went across and got an additional 30 day waiver visa? Thanks!

Hi! We just got the 30 day visa waiver on arrival when we first landed. So when you exit the country, and come back in again, you get another 30 day waiver. You can only do this twice by land. If we decide to stay longer in Thailand for a total of 90 days, then we will go to the immigration office for a 30 day extension. The bus ride to the border was cheaper than the immigration renewal. Hope that helps.
