This was a great video. I too had the same issue where the roller not spinning. I did a lot of troubleshooting, initially thinking power was not getting to the motor. Eventually discovered that power was being delivered but while the motor was spinning, the roller was NOT. I refer to this video at approx. at 5.33 minute mark when the white plastic gear attached to the motor is visible. Long story short, what I found was that when the motor gear was under load, the motor shaft was spinning (within the gear). In other words, it was not a tight fit between the motor shaft and the gear. The fix was simple... I slipped the gear off the shaft and spun it around. Doing so, the shaft locked securely onto the gear and the problem was resolved (I could have put a drop of glue but didnt on this occasion). This likely happened after hair had got trapped behind the roller spindle which caused it to jam up. In turn, while the spindle was jammed, the motor kept spinning and just tore off the plastic gear - the motor shaft has a fine burring that helps secures it to the plastic gear. So, the motto of the story is, check the motor gear is securely fitted to the motor shaft.

Thank you so much for making this video, I was just about to throw my DC35 out as the brish head would not spin, I followed your video and found a huge amount of dog hair around the motor spindle, took it out using needle nose plyers, and hey presto all working again. Again many thanks.

Thank you for the video, Todd. I have the same problem and could not get the motor and shroud ass’y off. The trick is - as you noted - leave the bottom 2 torx screws in place. Just remove the back 2 and the one in the side. Brilliant! I was close to ordering a new motorhead. You helped a lot. Cheers, Bryan

2:59 I couldn't get that out with your method, so I screwed a large screw into the centre hole just enough so it got a grip on the plastic, and that gave me something to grip with the pliers and it came out easy.

You saved me $500, thank you! Also a tip for anyone struggling to get the spinning motor area out, use a flathead screwdriver to push it out (rather than pliers like shown in the video). My vacuums issue was hair stuck behind the motor - cleaned it out and it works like new.

Thanks for the video. I wanted to remove the hair behind the gear and this is the video for me. I did use the cheapest type of IC extractor after spraying WD-40 then it was very easy to take it off. Don't forget to wear thick gloves to avoid bleeding.

Thanks from December 2022. I stopped using the brush head on my DC35 because after many years the hair and lint buildup make it roll slowly.

Thank you for creating this video! Was thinking it was some kind of electrical malfunction, as it would spin for 1-2 seconds then stop. Did a little searching, and found your video. Made sense, so I tried it. Lo and behold, there was a huge mess of hair tangled behind the gear that connects to the roller (which, as you pointed out, was a little tricky to pry off). Now my 4+ year old DC35 is working like new again - roller spins fast and strong now. Thanks again!

Dude, I could not get that motor piece off with needle nose pliers for the life of me. I messed up the plastic a bit trying. I got it to pop off by using a very narrow flat nosed screw driver head, and just popping it out. Much, much easier.

1:58 I'm having an insanely difficult time. All screws I could get at are gone, I pull with huge force but it will not come apart and I don't want it to pop all of a sudden and snap something or break a wire. Did anyone else have trouble getting the two parts separated?

Do you have the exact same model as him? I have the DC 44 Animal and while it looks similar, there are actually couple of additional screws underneath the rear flap.

Use a big screwdriver. Not all coins work, and even if they do you have to use a lot of force as you have no leverage.

Hello! DC45. one day the motor into the mop was stoped(not in the vacuum unit). I disassembled mop and measured motor resistance - 3 Om. The rotor was stucked, but i rotated his with force. 3 Om - It is work resistance or motor failed? And now - the main unit (with vacuum motor) is work, but i have not volume on the pins in the bottom of vacuum unit. From this pins volume go to the mop motor. When i disconnect the battery, this pins are directly connected(i am measure on the tester). Is it work situations? Sorry for my english...

Which wire goes to which side on the motor? One side of the motor has a red dot or line and the other side doesn't I didn't look to see when I took the wires off LOL... I checked through your video twice and couldn't find and couldn't see which wire goes to which side of the motor any help would be much appreciated.

Mine has a red spot where the black wire goes

The black wire goes on the terminal nearest to the casing when motor installed, not being sarcastic but I always take photos before I strip anything down. I have a problem with my DC35 which is the motor wires go through the knuckle joint which can swivel more than 360 degrees so the cable must go through some kind of slip ring arrangement but I haven't found any videos on stripping the knuckle joint, a squirt of WD40 worked for a short while but then same again.
