Worst vacuum ever! I have NEVER had a vacuum to cost so much and require so much maintenance to keep it running. I've owned just about every model and it's always the same insane amount of maintenance. I'm done with Dyson!

Holy crap! I took apart the brush head today because my dyson wasn't moving the brush head at all. I noticed the mechanism was really hard to move so I figured there was hair there. Then I found your video showing how to take it apart, and THANK YOU SO MUCH! I WOULDNT HAVE EVER NOTICED THAT SCREW THERE. There was about 3x the amount of hair as you found in yours. You saved me from buying a new one, I bet at least $100. Thank you so much! Its working like new.

Excellent instructions. I really appreciate that you don't waste people's time with over explaining every little detail. This was easy to follow, and I DID find the little monster tuft under the spinner .. however after I put everything back together it STILL didn't spin very fast (it did spin though). Turns out the main issue was that my dog had torn some cardboard into little shreds that I had vacuumed up prior to this event and I thought I had cleared all the little pieces (the hose and head were clear). And suction seemed "okay". So I took off the hose right at the ball and there is a tiny slot where debris enters the ball that had a few very small pieces of cardboard trapped. Not enough to restrict the air but apparently enough to weaken it to the point that the turbine wouldn't spin very fast. I cleared that out and it runs like new now. Thank you very much for this great video.

I was having the same issue with mine, and even after I cleaned the entire roll I wouldn't have ever know that one could actually remove the roller base and that hair would be stocked in there. I'll clean it again. I was so bummed out the roll would not spin as it should after I cleaned it thoroughly, but I'm sure this will do the trick. Thanks for posting!!

Great job. I purchased a new battery due to the brush not spinning and did not fix the issue. I searched and found this. Worked perfectly, got an great tight washer or hair that was otherwise invisible without taking off that last screw. The roller was spinning freely by hand after but still wouldn't spin when switched on. Gave the whole dyson a good blast with the leaf blower inside and out(especially the build up of fluff around the drum) and is now running at warp speed!

Spot on video, saved me a replacement Dyson head costing £65!, turns out my issue was the hair stuck behind the spindle, in the head, when I tried using the Vac it would spin for a few seconds then stop, but following the step by step guide I was able to dismantle the unit get the spindle out and find a massive wound up piece of hair which was causing the problem, removed that and I cannot believe how good the vacuum is now and as stated in the video unless you remove the spindle you will never know how much hair is behind there, I would say if even you don't have problems but had the machine for a while you should look at the spindle and clear it out to save your motor burning out and improve the performance of the machine.

Mine worked fine until I rinsed the head out. I took off the slotted end as you suggested, the inner axle spun no probelm. Brush head was clean, and spun fine - as long as I didn't secure the slotted cap back on fully. Then it would apply a braking effect - stopped everything.

Hi Bill! Thanks for taking the time to put this online - and for explaining it so clearly. Even a non-DIYer like me was able to follow it. Tried all three tips, to no avail, before I realised some of the small bristles were folded over on themselves (at the back of the roller, of course) and that was what was preventing the roller from spinning. Snipped these and hey presto! Thanks again 👍

The problem with my Dyson vacuum was a bit different. When the vacuum was turned on, the head roller would spin for 3-5 seconds and then stop. Turn vacuum off/on, and again roll would spin for 3-5 seconds and stop. It was as if there was not enough suction --- same as if washable filter was clogged. Since I had recently cleaned the washable filter and emptied the canister I knew they weren't the causes. So your video inspired me to disassemble the head roller. Without your video I would not of thought of removing the end "gear" that the roller slides into. When I removed the end "gear", I found a very small amount of hair (not the ball of hair you found). I thought that could not have been the problem .... but when I reassembled the head roller and turned on the vacuum the head roller spun !!! THANKS.

Thanks Bill, great vid but I had to go a little bit further to solve the same problem. I removed the 3 T9 torx screws on the transmission just above the electric motor and found that the tiny nylon cog on top of the motor was a bit worse for wear (not terrible). I was easily able to flip it over and hey presto, it’s like a new machine! The problems that I was also having with intermittent stop / start issues that I thought were related to the switch suddenly disappeared too! I’m thinking there may be some kind of overload switch that would turn off the unit to prevent damage to the jammed brush motor.

Thanks so much for this, I was becoming very frustrated with the screws, ended up one side was small Philips head, other side was Torx 10 and the very tricky little wheel was as you said a Torx 8, which I had to go to Bunnings to buy ! But it's now working, so very appreciative of this helpful site and your contribution !

Fantastic. Thank you so much! Just saved me £50+ as I was nearing giving up and buying a new motorhead, even though I was sure it was fixable. I'd taken all the visible hair out and checked everything I could find, but didn't know hair could get in behind that gear!

My issue was on a completely different Dyson & not one of the problems you listed but your tip to open up the brush section was very helpful & led to me solving the issue! (Misplaced peices). Thank you!

Fantastic instructions. This old lady was able to take it apart, clean out the hair, AND put it back together again. Thanks!!

Over the past few weeks, the brush bar was turning less and less. Figured there was something under the spindle, blocking its rotation but didn't know how to access it. Your video showing that there's a screw inside the shaft of the spindle is the information I needed. Thanks!

This video was my last alternative before getting a new Motorhead! Electrical connections needed to be wiped down. Who knew?! Thank you.

Thanks, used the flat screwdriver and it worked. Even did the same on a brush head that was taken in to dyson ( approx 5 year ago) and they said no longer worked so we bought a replacement. I now have two working brush heads.

Big help Thanks! Side note: a regular quarter ($0.25) can also be used to open up the roller bar lock.

Magnificent work, thankyou hugely. I got all the way with a T10 screwdriver, only to find the final screw was a T8 (!!) Which then had to be bought. Yes its tricky getting out that last item, even after the screw is removed. Altogether I dismantled the head 5 times, before ultimate success - thanks to you.

Exactly what you said at 7:19. But mine looked quite a bit harder to open than yours. Had to pull apart the whole base where the motor is.

You are a genius!!! The head of my stick vacuum has stopped spinning months ago; I have resorted to sweeping them vacuuming my puddles of dust, dirt and hair. It took me a little time to take the head apart but it works like new now. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have a v6 slightly different model than the video but this solved the problem. Replaced the battery. Cleaned then replaced the filters. Even took it to a shop and this problem still persisted. If not for this video was going to just buy a new one. You rule.

Thank you for the nice walkthrough. Got a Dysan hand-down due to them not knowing this. Easy fix with patience!
