Worst vacuum ever! I have NEVER had a vacuum to cost so much and require so much maintenance to keep it running. I've owned just about every model and it's always the same insane amount of maintenance. I'm done with Dyson!

Holy crap! I took apart the brush head today because my dyson wasn't moving the brush head at all. I noticed the mechanism was really hard to move so I figured there was hair there. Then I found your video showing how to take it apart, and THANK YOU SO MUCH! I WOULDNT HAVE EVER NOTICED THAT SCREW THERE. There was about 3x the amount of hair as you found in yours. You saved me from buying a new one, I bet at least $100. Thank you so much! Its working like new.

Excellent instructions. I really appreciate that you don't waste people's time with over explaining every little detail. This was easy to follow, and I DID find the little monster tuft under the spinner .. however after I put everything back together it STILL didn't spin very fast (it did spin though). Turns out the main issue was that my dog had torn some cardboard into little shreds that I had vacuumed up prior to this event and I thought I had cleared all the little pieces (the hose and head were clear). And suction seemed "okay". So I took off the hose right at the ball and there is a tiny slot where debris enters the ball that had a few very small pieces of cardboard trapped. Not enough to restrict the air but apparently enough to weaken it to the point that the turbine wouldn't spin very fast. I cleared that out and it runs like new now. Thank you very much for this great video.

Can’t tell you how many times I’ve googled how to fix something and you’ve helped me out. The final trick here did the job, just when I was about to send it for repairs. Super easy. Although, when I was half way through pulling out all the screws I realised my fingers were small enough to get in there without pulling it all apart. Saved me money, effort and worry. Thanks! 👍🏻

Great job. I purchased a new battery due to the brush not spinning and did not fix the issue. I searched and found this. It was a pain getting the final piece (i had to remove about 7-8 screws) but worth it. This one had twice as much hair behind it than you showed. Saved me having to either purchase the entire head or a new vacuum.

Hey! Thanks for your help! To anyone wondering about screw sizes, if you have this model, the canister big ball animal, it's a T10 for the 4 screws of the plastic plates and T8 for the one in the turbine spinner. Hope that helps!

Yes, good tip, I couldn't get a screwdriver that went into the spindle for the last screw so I took it into our local computer shop. They had the right screw driver and didn't even charge me. Thanks for your tip, now I know what to screw drivers to buy. 😊

Spot on video, saved me a replacement Dyson head costing £65!, turns out my issue was the hair stuck behind the spindle, in the head, when I tried using the Vac it would spin for a few seconds then stop, but following the step by step guide I was able to dismantle the unit get the spindle out and find a massive wound up piece of hair which was causing the problem, removed that and I cannot believe how good the vacuum is now and as stated in the video unless you remove the spindle you will never know how much hair is behind there, I would say if even you don't have problems but had the machine for a while you should look at the spindle and clear it out to save your motor burning out and improve the performance of the machine.

Hi Bill! Thanks for taking the time to put this online - and for explaining it so clearly. Even a non-DIYer like me was able to follow it. Tried all three tips, to no avail, before I realised some of the small bristles were folded over on themselves (at the back of the roller, of course) and that was what was preventing the roller from spinning. Snipped these and hey presto! Thanks again 👍

Thanks Bill, great vid but I had to go a little bit further to solve the same problem. I removed the 3 T9 torx screws on the transmission just above the electric motor and found that the tiny nylon cog on top of the motor was a bit worse for wear (not terrible). I was easily able to flip it over and hey presto, it’s like a new machine! The problems that I was also having with intermittent stop / start issues that I thought were related to the switch suddenly disappeared too! I’m thinking there may be some kind of overload switch that would turn off the unit to prevent damage to the jammed brush motor.

Thank you. I had watched your video before so I knew how to clean the head on my V8 stick, but it still wasn’t spinning. Watching this again encouraged me to go back in and check for hair. Sure enough, after the 2nd cleaning, it works again! Thank you so much.

Cheers Bill, why Dyson can't stick with regular Philips screws is anyone's guess.

Phillips screws can "cam-out" and prevent you from applying the correct/consistent torque. Thus the use of Torx, Square/Robertson, etc

Fantastic. Thank you so much! Just saved me £50+ as I was nearing giving up and buying a new motorhead, even though I was sure it was fixable. I'd taken all the visible hair out and checked everything I could find, but didn't know hair could get in behind that gear!

The problem with my Dyson vacuum was a bit different. When the vacuum was turned on, the head roller would spin for 3-5 seconds and then stop. Turn vacuum off/on, and again roll would spin for 3-5 seconds and stop. It was as if there was not enough suction --- same as if washable filter was clogged. Since I had recently cleaned the washable filter and emptied the canister I knew they weren't the causes. So your video inspired me to disassemble the head roller. Without your video I would not of thought of removing the end "gear" that the roller slides into. When I removed the end "gear", I found a very small amount of hair (not the ball of hair you found). I thought that could not have been the problem .... but when I reassembled the head roller and turned on the vacuum the head roller spun !!! THANKS.

Magnificent work, thankyou hugely. I got all the way with a T10 screwdriver, only to find the final screw was a T8 (!!) Which then had to be bought. Yes its tricky getting out that last item, even after the screw is removed. Altogether I dismantled the head 5 times, before ultimate success - thanks to you.

Well you just saved me $1000 thank you. I am on to my fifth Dyson spiny head thing which lasted a month. Was fed up so went online to do some research for the best vacuum for long haired dogs when I came across your video. Followed your instructions and blow me down the bloody thing works. Fantastic and thanks again. Perhaps you should send this video to Dyson to sell with their machines....😀

GOOD REPAIR VIDEO !!! Just a tip for everyone... The screw holding the drive wheel on is a Torx #8 as apposed to every other Torx screw on the Dyson which is a #10....

Thanks so much for this, I was becoming very frustrated with the screws, ended up one side was small Philips head, other side was Torx 10 and the very tricky little wheel was as you said a Torx 8, which I had to go to Bunnings to buy ! But it's now working, so very appreciative of this helpful site and your contribution !
