Dyson DC59 Floor attachment motor repair

Dyson Cordless Vacuums turn off and on by itself. This can be a filter or hair on the roller. When it's not there is most likely hair binding the floor attachment motor. Here is how to fix it without the cost of replacing the attachment

Thank you. This helped fix my v6. I started taking all the casing off too and got stuck with the wires in the motor. Then i just yanked out the spindle and managed to clean out the hair without disconnecting the motor. Very satisfying thanks again

Nice clear instructions to get me to the root of the problem, which was hair trapped in the spindle in the motor section. I had to use pliers to remove the spindle mechanism as it wouldn't budge by just trying to pull. I'm sure next time I'll be able to do this task three times quicker! Thanks.

Wow ours is now working yippee ! Couldn’t get the part that spins around to turn. Removed the last screw and low and behold it was jammed with little hairs. Removed now and hoover working again. Saved me £30 as that was what Dyson wanted to send a new part. Thanks so much for your advice 😀

Hi thank you very much for your informative video - I had not noticed tthe Torx 8 screw holding the brush drive. I followed your instructions and took apart and cleaned - I found that a lot of hair and dust had got into main brush drive bearing and it was very rough when turned. Having in a past life serviced power tools - I decided to remove the circlip (was very tight) but drilled a couple of small holes to the outside of the clip to enable a screw driver to get in there & lever the circlip off - be careful and hold so doesnt fly off - wear glasses. I tapped out the bearing - the outside of which has a rubber/plastic seal. I removed the rubber seal with a jewelers screwdriver and sprayed wd40 into the bearing and picked/washed out the hair. When clean and smooth to turn I then regreased the bearing and refitted - this time with the rubber seal to the inside to better prevent entry of the hair etc. into the bearing. All back together and working well. Cheers Kim

This was extremely helpful! SHORTCUT: skip unscrewing all of the housing screw and only use the T-8 to unscrew the spiral bladed connector.

Most of the time the spiral blade is on really hard and difficult to remove if you don't take the rest of this apart. After doing this a few times you might be able to take the shortcut.

Great information, much appreciated. I wanted to go a step further and remove the spindle from its casing. I believe it's held in using a circlip. Don't really want to break anything. Found lots of hair, cleaned out, now working!

Thank you for the video. I did this but I also had to remove the black cover for the bearings under which there was even more hair stopping it working. Once I removed this and lubricated the bearings I put it back together, put the unit directly on the vacuum gave it some gentle persuasion which holding down the trigger and voila, it now spins like a jet engine.

Performed all the troubleshooting that dyson.com had. Called the support line since that didn't help. They said "oh, your motor is going out. You'll have to buy a new one." "How much is that? And can I get a discount?" "Sure, 20% off comes to $160." Can't believe they want $200 for a new head. This video saved me. (Side note: if this doesn't work, search DC59 compatible motorhead. Found some off-brand ones for $25 on Amazon. Better than spending $160 or just buying a whole new Dyson)

Thank you for this excellent tutorial! I first used a german video but that one did not mention that the part at the motor has a screw inside and there was the real problem with a hair curl around the motor. After removing it I have added a bit of "men's deodorant" WD-40 and it all freed up instantly.

Sorry it didn't fix your problem. Other things that can cause the stop and start are plugged up filters. Make sure to wash out the heppa filter as well as the one in the main storage tank.

This was a very satisfying fix thank you for posting! I was convinced it was something else as I ran the brush head motor without the belt attached and it ran but then stopped much like it did when fully assembled.I guess the brush head motor needs a load to behave properly ??? Thank you sir 👍

It annoys me no end to see James Dyson coming on the TV and espousing design perfection and then having to deal with this mess frequently. I looked everywhere for a tutorial like this and this is perfect. Was able to get the rotor off without removing the whole motor as some suggested, but it was still good to get in there to remove some junk from around the motor itself. Also didnt have a proper torx bit but a 2.4mm flathead did the trick. My wallet and I thank you a bunch!
