Dyson HD01 Repair #2 (Board Level Repair)

In this video we take a deeper look into the head of the Dyson HD01 and we see how it is put together. I do not take this Dyson apart correctly so I did not show a lot of the How Not To. We do find out how it should be done as well as repairing this one and actually getting it put back together. We do have to replace a component on the board level on this Dyson and then we test and show reassembly. Hopefully it makes sense after seeing it apart and put back together how it should be taking apart correctly. I learned a lot in the repair. Hope you find this video helpful or at least interesting. Thank you for the more detailed video! I’m in the process of trying to repair a junk dyson I got off eBay. My dad, who is an electrical engineer, is helping me. I’m an ag engineer so I’m not as well-versed in this stuff. Thanks for the video, it helped me repair my dryer with minimal damage. First I tried to rotate the electronics assy to remove it but it wouldn't quite go far enough to disengage. I found that the rear cover with fan and heat buttons needed to be removed first by popping it straight out. Then I could rotate it all the way to remove without breaking the tabs. My buttons were snapped from removal as they were glued in really well. But I ordered new buttons from China so we'll see how they go back together. On my dryer a thermal fuse was bad and I replaced them both. I'd guess the cause was a very dirty filter which I have cleaned.

This was a great video and inspired me to give fixing my dyson hairdryer a try. In the process I broke of the tab or plug on the metal casing of the motor that connects to the black wire. Is there a fix for that (other than buying a replacement motor) or have I sabotaged my efforts? Thanks for posting this video!

If you are talking about the ground wire that attaches to the motor housing, you may be able to solder the wire on the housing. It will not be a way to put tab back on. If you can not solder it maybe ok to skin back and let it make contact with the outside of motor housing? Since it will be clamped in well? Thanks for your comment and Best of luck to ya!

Hopefully somebody sees this that has an answer. Is it possible to take the nozzle attachments apart to separate the magnetic base? Im trying to build a custom attachment. The nozzles have a screw in the middle but nothing comes apart when removed.

Any advice on how to replace the fuse in the plug? Mine broke twice and dyson told me to throw the machine out but for $400 I’d like to have it repaired. No one seems to fix these units but a lot of them break (like ALL in 2yrs)

HI, I have not had that issue yet but I do assume that the cord has the fuse with the filtering board inside the sealed housing. The only way to get to the fuse is to actually destroy the housing over the filtering board. It would be hard to put this back together. One solution could be buying a replacement cord off eBay? You can install it very similar to how you see me reassemble the one in the video. I really dislike when companies make it extremely difficult to repair or work on there products so I share all I can. Hope it helps and Best of luck to ya!

To be honest, when I saw the KZbin notification about this video, I thought you were fixing a drill. Anyway, I ended up watching it to the very end. Are you fixing that drill too? It could be nice if you could find a non working brushless Ryobi drill so you could fix it. I have one that doesn’t work.

I was testing this Ridgid Brushless motor with the cheap hobby BLDC driver. It works very well, but not reversible built in. I have a video looking into this Ridgid, it was really non-repairable. I did show this motor run with the cheap controller. I also used this same controller to fix a Ridgid Brushless jigsaw. It had room to add the controller in the housing! You may be interested in the Ridgid videos, both Ridgid and Ryobi are made by TTI.

Got same dyson unit, heat and speed lights all work, fan runs, just no hot air comes out. Filter is clean. Would this be down to microprocessor or Heating element / fuse feeding heating element. No flashing lights seen, works ok as a "cold hairdryer" but just wont give hot air on any red light setting.

I would think testing the output of the SCR feeding the element would be needed if you can do that safely. That way you can diagnose where the power is stopping. The ones that I have seen the thermal fuse will cut power to the whole unit. So if no fault it may be the microcontroller output or the SCR itself possibly. I have not seen that exact issue to say for sure it could be a board mounted fuse for the element, but I can't say for sure.

@@paulmoisa9387 The small controller used like on the jigsaw does not have a built in direction fwd/rev control and that is why it worked great for the jigsaw but not easily reversible. For a drill or impact.

I watched both your videos, and need to know how you got the buttons off of the second one? I know the first ones were already glued on, but did you have to break the second ones and glue them on as well?

I have the limited experience with only these 2. With my experience they are glued on. Keep in mine that both of these were used already and I believe someone had already attempted repair at some level. You may get lucky and the buttons pry out, but they could all be glued in for all I know. They are seemingly glues on to a small rubber backed switch pkate. Sorry I can not confirm this for you. Thanks for your comment. I will say that the ones from here in the US will not work with 220V. It would be a total redesign. One thing interesting is that Dyson is actually made overseas where they typically use 230V so maybe the ones in the UK will work? Doing a repair on one of these atm, 1 thermal fuse is blown and the white rectangular fuse is also open circuit. I bridged out the black and green wire essentially bypass the thermal fuses and small element, it runs on the bench with the motor attached but the elements smoked up, do you think thats because the motor wasnt moving air over the elements?

@@heely69 I just had the same issue but realized something, the fuse is actually covered with a thin layer of insulation on the ends. Most of the PCB appears to be conformally coated so you need to use a knife to scrape a little bit until you get metal. Then when you measure it, it should be correct.

I think it was a piece of PVC pipe if I remember correctly. LOL. I was showing how not to do it until I did finally get into it since I showed later how it twists and locks in place.

Hello there! We just bought a knockoff chinese model that mimicks the original one... after a couple months, it just blows cold air. So far, and watching your previous video, I opened the handle part, and looks surprisingly close to this one! Just before I mess with it trying to open the upper part, and recognising I just had a VERY basic level of electronics knowledge... lights are on, blows cold air... just not hot. Could it be the temp fuses on the top of the heat resistance? What else could be causing that failure? Thanks!

If it is alot like the Dyson it could in fact be the thermal fuses in the front side of the heater unit.

@@helpman Well assuming it's like the Dyson in the video then the back plate does pop off after some careful prying around the crack of the housing and the plate. The reverse steps of how I put it back together is how it should come apart. I could not show correct steps apart since I did it wrong to start with, LOL. After I got it apart I realized how it all went together and discussed that a little bit and showed reassembly.

Spudger type tool then a small flat screw driver until I could get my fingernails in and work at it. It's not real hard, but is hard to start it pulling out.

I would think if tagged 50HZ it might possibly be an overseas model rated for 240V/50HZ instead of 120V/60HZ like in North America?

@@ThriftyToolShed It was acutally bought from Turkey and rated 220~240v and 50 Hz. The voltage where I am moving to is 220 v but 60 Hz. That is why I would like to know if it is compatible and would work fine with the frequency difference, since I heard a lot saying that it will work fine on 50 and 60 Hz but they might missed to tag it out.

Yes most of the time if the Voltage is within rating the device will work on 50 or 60 hz. Most consumer electronics will work on either and the most affected devices are usually AC motors. The motor speed will be higher on 60hz. The HD01 has a BLDC and uses a controller so I would think it would work fine either on 50 or 60hz. If it states "50HZ only" anywhere I would research it more to make sure, but typically somewhere in the manual etc. It should show rating as 240V 50-60HZ rating. I am not 100% on yours since it's not the same as mine, but it seems likely to work the same.

Yesterday I replaced the motor for my supersonic dryer and it still refused to turn on (did this bc Dyson said that was what was wrong with it). I can hear a frequency coming from the link box when I plug it in, but no lights turn on. I’ve had it for 4 years but only used it for about 2. Suddenly one day it refused to turn on. If you have any advise or are willing to fix it for me I can pay! :)

I try to help by posting what I have learned and sharing that best I can. If I understand that you hear a high frequency from the filter box on the cord? I would try to carefully use a straight 120v regular cord to power the hair dryer. It is possible that the filter box is bad? Atleast that will eliminate that part. The filter is mostly for noise I believe and it should still run without it for testing. I noticed some replacement cords on eBay don't even have the filter on them? I am not sure about those, but I have tested mine without the filter and it tests fine that way. Best of luck to you with yours!

I have not found a way to easily test these without the actual Dyson board driving it. I believe these are Series Reluctance motors and use high frequency pulse to run. A router speed control for example will fry it. I use another known good motor for testing or put the questioned motor into a known good dryer for proper testing. Best of luck to ya!

Hi, Some of the cheaper replacement motors are 3 phase BLDC motors that only work with the Chinese board. They may sell the 2 pole SRM also, but I am not sure. If it has only 2 pins and claims it works directly with the Dyson then it might be ok and it's possible you have a board issue?

@@ThriftyToolShed okay 👍 so Im still having hope after your reply as I got 3 phase motor and didn't run on dyson board but the 2 pin motor are bit expensive. Also dyson motor which I'm testing have correct resistance so if there is correct resistance then is motor okay ?

Typically ok if resistance reads well. What are you basing the good ohms reading from? It's about all we can go by except for actually testing it out by running it in the dryer itself.

I did not test that on the first HD01 I worked on to say for certain. Since I was almost certain it was simply a filter. I had tested the function of the 2nd HD01 with a straight cheater cord so I felt like my assumption was correct and in fact just a filter for all the high frequency noise. I am sure it's a noisy device.

Yes, the HD01 that I worked on runs fine without it. I believe it to be a high frequency noise filter since the supersonic air blower must use very high frequency pulses to run it. I used a straight 120VAC cord to mine for testing. You will of course need a GFCI installed on the cord itself or at least have a GFCI installed where it is used for safety!

Since the heater element and motor is designed for input voltage , you would have to buy correct design for your supply.

Dyson haif dryer not worth the price to just blow air, there are many dries have the same features now.

Where are the thermal fuses located?

@@ThriftyToolShed Thank you. are there any other fuses in the unit (power box? plug housing?)...mine simply will not power on...no lights, nothing.

Some of these have GFCI plugs.. Mine had what I believe to be a filter in the sealed box. As far as I know it's just an Electrical (noise) filter. The dryer will run with 120V straight to the input terminals as I showed in the video. Once the 120v is at the dryer it goes to the power switch then to the thermal cutout and thermal fuses for the heater circuit and then back to the board. I shared videos working on 2 of these in case it helps someone else. I basically shared as we learn together. Not much more help I can do than that.

@@ThriftyToolShed OK so tackled the Dyson today and have it completely dissembled. I terested the thermal fuses with an ohmeter...hopefully it was ok to test them without removing them. With probes on each side of the fuse, one showed "0 ohms" and the other showed infinite resistance, so guessing that one is shot and is the culprit...agree? Also, I noticed that at your mark 13:14, you allude to a 3.5A fuse (labelled R6 on the baord) at the ground. That showed infinite also but not sure I tested that correctly as I just placed the leads on each of the metal "brackets" that hold it in place. Thoughts? Thank you again and happy new year!

@@milbrooke It does seem one of the thermal fuses has opened up. As far as the small 3.5A SMD fuse, it's for the control side so the electronics power and most likely the blower motor control. It would be odd if it's open, but I would double check since the board has a light conformal coating it could be that the meter probes are not making a good connection? Best of luck to ya!
