What is the allowed speed limit for pedal-assisted bikes in Japan? Is it also 25km/h like here in Germany? And is a throttle lever even allowed? Because here in Germany a throttle would be restricted to only a speed of up to 4km/h (intended as support for pushing the bike or get it going).

Japan EAPC regulations are somewhat stricter than EU regulations, though there is no restriction on the motor output here in Japan. 250W nominal power limit in EU, I think. Many English web sites report that there is a 250W power output limit in Japan, but it is not true. We have no limit on the motor output. As for the speed limit, it is 24km/h here. Any kind of throttle is not allowed. Funny, or ridiculous, part of Japan EAPC regulations is that an EAPC must conform to the following power assist ratio restriction: 1: Up to the speed of 10km/h The ratio of the motor power output to the human power output must be 2:1 or less. 2: Between 10km/h and 24km/h The ration of the motor power output to the human power output must gradually decrease from 2:1 to 0:1. There is a prescribed formula for calculating this. 3: Over 24km/h The motor power output must be null. About the walk assist, you are allowed to be assisted by the motor up to 6km/h, but then your bike must be in the physically "unridable" condition: no saddle or similar conditions. Funny, huh? EU, UK and Japan, we all suffer from more or less ridiculous EAPC regulations. I wish we all had one and the same regulations at least, could share the same e-MTBs and exchange service/maintenance info and ride experiences. Riders in USA and Canada are lucky, although I admit that there must be more or less strict rules on EAPCs in our small country to keep the general traffic from being in complete chaos 😅 Thanks for watching!
