Congratulations on your new homestead. My wife and I did something very similar 4 years ago and couldn't be happier. Only difference is our property had an old farm house on it that needed a total rehab. We spent months looking for a place while living at a campground, only to find our homestead a half a mile away. Moved our trailer to the property and lived in it while fixing up the house. It took 5 months (thru the winter) to finish and now we are just enjoying a simpler life. Keep moving forward to make your dreams reality and enjoy the time together with your family because in the end that is all that is matters.

Just stumbled upon your channel. Different circumstances, but we just bought our SW VA property (61 acres) 2 years ago, and intend to retire there in about 7 years. We were really just window shopping for land online, and came across one that already had a cabin on it -- we fell in love with it, and purchased it not too long before the pandemic shut things down. I just bought my first tractor, so will be learning on the fly as well. We're thinking of doing more videos of our projects, so just have a shell of a channel right now, but hope to add to it as we spend more time there. Best of luck on your adventure!

Wow I'm so excited to watch your journey. We live in NJ, and all my husband talks is about getting land to have "projects", privacy and be outside. We want to leave all this congestión behind. We have also 2 daughters 8 & 12 and this is just such an inspiration. But we have no idea of how to search for land 😕. It's so scary in my head . But I really want to just do it. I will go thru all your videos and see what else we can learn and will share your chanel with him wishing you the best!
@WalnutsandWineberries2 жыл бұрын
You guys can do it, Jessica! I could write you a book and we haven't even been here for 2 years. Believe me, we were scared too. But not a day has gone by that we regretted this. Meg tells me daily how much she loves our new life now. If you're serious and need some advice, our email is in the channel info. I've learned a lot through this journey so far, especially buying land and what to look for. Also, what to research - county building codes, schools, geographic maps, etc. Feel free to reach out. I'll do my best to help as time allows.

I came here after watching a number of your later videos, thanks for the background. I have just bought ninety acres of bush in Tanzania because my Tanzanian wife wants to farm, I was born on a farm in England many years ago, the challenge is both daunting and exciting, exactly as your project is to you, what I like best about your videos is your determination to do as much as possible yourself and as you learn so do we.

Okay, I’m in! I absolutely love the area you are in. A lot of folks are feeling the same things you did but, for any number of reasons, are not able to do what you are. You are young and healthy so with your thought process, this is the time! It’s not going to be easy…not at all….but it’s going to be so worth it!! Don’t turn back…things are going to get a lot worse where you came from, and you are in the place to survive that, if you do the important things first…and are prepared. Use social media like wild animals!! Print out and journal as much 18th and 19th century lifestyle stuff as you humanly can! You know what you need to survive and protect yourselves…get it done. You’re going to sleep great every night…exhausted and satisfied with what you’ve accomplished! You are in my prayers.

Have you guys considered sharing your property with another family ,perhaps someone in your family ,I think what you have done is incredible and awesome, I have always wanted like 30 to 50 acres and multiple similar aged kids and adults ,if it’s the right people I think it would check all boxes that are conducive to maximum human health ,i study human health and I have compiled through extensive decade long independent research a list of all components of health which is our only true wealth , our health destiny can be dramatically altered for Both good and bad,you guys are on the right path , good luck to you all

We have wineberries on our property. You have probably found out that they are best when the color is blood red. If the color is lighter red they are sour. Are you processing the black walnuts? Once you crack into one you can use wire cutters to remove the inner shell parts.
@WalnutsandWineberries2 жыл бұрын
Hey Chris! My youngest goes nuts over picking Wineberries. Blood red, yes sir! We processed a lot (a whole loader full) of walnuts this fall only to find out we didn't like the way they tasted. So heartbreaking. I husked and cleaned them and dried them for months, but the flavor never seemed to mild out. I read that the flavor dissipates over time, but maybe I'm doing something wrong. Thoughts? On a sidenote, we have some nice hickory nuts near the house site that are delicious.

Hi Sherri! I was thinking about your comment today while painting. If we were to go back and do it all again, one of the major things we would do differently is to get a 4 season RV. If you have not gotten your RV yet, I highly recommend this. We had a big problem with condensation/mold in the winter time. Just figured I would mention it to save you the hardship we went through. ;) - Meg

We have a camper on our land as well that we stay in on the weekends when we are there. Virginia is a beautiful state!

We are about an hour from there. We really picked well when we decided on Virginia. It's a great in-between for us. We both grew up in the northeast and then lived in South Carolina for 20 years. Virginia's geography reminds us of our roots without the blizzards you get up north. I didn't realize how much I missed the cool evenings in the summertime. It's my favorite part of the day - sitting at the firepit and watching the fireflies.
