The whole concept of driving slow cars fast is amazing. I’ve owned some fast cars but these little cars have way more character. My current stable has a 1997 Miata 2017 GTI that is tuned The GTI would smoke the Miata in every aspect from acceleration, braking and handling and yet the Miata is more fun to drive.

I owned and daily drove an E30 M3 for nearly 20 years. For some of that same time I ran a Porsche race shop. The way I always described driving the E30 M3 was that it danced, so it was cool to hear you describe the handling similarly. You can rotate it on demand with use of the pedals and steering. I used to occasionally bring it out to a PCA autocross and it would absolutely dominate the Porsches in that setting. I even beat an imported (not legal in the USA) 996 GT3 more than once. I’ve owned a lot of legendary cars in my life, and the E30 M3 is one of the few that lives up to the hype. It just sucks I sold my E30 M3 for $7K and will likely never own another. At least I have the memories.

I have a 1987 E30 316 carburator, it's only 90ch but it was my first car, I used it as a daily and each day was a pleasure to go to school ! You're right about spending money for the maintenance, I bought it only 1700€ (in France) but spent almost 3300€ fixing a lot of stuff... For a student it was hard but I would do it again if I had to ;) I drove it 2 years before switching it for a brand new mx-5 1.5L ND because of gasoline consumption with 100km/day i have for my first job (switched from 10L/100km to 6L/100km while keep driving with fun the foot to the floor) I'm happy with the miata, but i kept the E30 for week-end because it's so much fun to drive, in a different way ! Whenever I thought of selling the E30, I took it for a drive and after less than 10mn, i was like "Hell no, no way to sell it..." hahaha E30 forever ;)

Having to work around the M3's lesser power makes the car more engaging which adds to the fun factor. One simply can't power through a 30 mph up hill corner but must shift down probably two gears and get the rev's up to maintain one's pace. And that is fun. Also, if you're driving public 2-lane roads out in the country side, well you'll still be going exceedingly fast if you're pushing it. So the E30M3 has it. And the old 911SC? Nothing to complain about. Nothing at all.

The E30 M3 could be a 318i below 4000rpm for someone who has no clue how to drive it. But IF you know how to drive it in its powerband, it goes like a bat from hell. Goldielockzone: 4500-7500rpm. Remove the limiter and it will keep putting out power well over 8000rpm until it destroys itself. You have to work hard with an S14. No lazy, low rpm torque but screeching high rpms is the way to go. Trust me. I know.

While the 911 has the promenance to be a competitor to this E30, I feel like a 944 is closer to an actual competitor to the BMW, especially the NA. Neutral balance, coupe, front engine, water cooled, similar power, handling, and 4 cylinder. I guess the 911 survived like the M3, but that's it really. Especially when price is factored in, get that feel and fun for a fraction.
@corsa1806 жыл бұрын
I would agree, but I would say the '87-'88 944S would be the better competitor. The higher-revving 16-valve 2.5L four cylinder with 188hp is directly on par with the E30 M3.

I don’t know if you got a chance to drive those again. Watched the show a long time, but for some reason I missed this episode. The e30 looks modded, and that G50 looks extremely stock. Two things is - make sure the suspension is sorted on the 911, the E30 looked much more sorted, suspension-wise - and then make sure you’re between 4k - 6k on that 3.2 pretty much all the time, totally changes the driving experience. You’re right that the M3 is fun and peppy, but just based on engine sounds, if you were driving the 911 as hard as you all were pushing that M3, you might have felt different. Maybe not though, who knows?

"Porsche 911 vs BMW M3, E30 vs G50 Carrera 3.2" - It is plain silly you do not give the YEAR of the cars you talk about in the TITLE of your video... You should give this information at least in the DESCRIPTION, but you don't! - You have to go to the 17.20 minute mark to realize you are talking about a 1987 Porche 911! And "This 1st Generation M3"? -- After watching the ENTIRE Video, still don't know the years it was made. I know it was in the 1980's, but don't know which specific car you drove in this long video! Another example is your MIATA video talking about 'various generations'... When you say "This generation" of car, it would be nice to know the years it was manufactured by the company and it would have been helpful if you listed this information!... This would make it so much more informative. - Don't mean to nit-pick or be overly critical and I do enjoy watching the videos you make... They are very well made.... Just some 'constructive criticism (provide a bullet point summary of the cars you are demonstrating, with model years etc.)... This will improve each page. Thanks so much for your efforts!

@phattyhales6 жыл бұрын
I 100% agree with this actually. I love the E30 M3 but I love my BRZ. I think they are similar in a lot of ways. The BRZ feels way more modern but beyond that, they are fairly similar in terms of performance and dynamics. The other difference is the BRZ was designed as a sports car from inception whereas the E30 was turned into one.
@mowflexthesubnegro18466 жыл бұрын
I think I would like my 86 more because of it being an actual sports car design vs a 2 door sedan design of the M3. My 86 now has the power of a e46 M3 but with e30 M3 weight and simplicity!

I think the inline 4 twin cam 16v ae86 is more similar to the e30m3 than the BRZ/FRS/gt86. They, the ae86 and e30m3, are what BMW and Toyota based on in their modern cars and enthiasts have been urging. The ae86 and e30m3 prices have been rising year after year.

I'm not a rich guy either, I traded the 06 Cayman in on a 19 Elantra....boo to me. I'm a trucker who loves driving, and I'm currently saving for a 718 any form, Cayman or Boxster. I've rented it twice and don't care if it's a 4 banger,. it's an awesome engine, and it's a tremendous Porsche, even better than my 06 Cayman, but not as charming as my 85 911 was.

Both fantastic driver's cars, but neither of them is what I consider attractive. Iconic? Unique? Sure. Attractive? Not even close. Great episode. I drove an ND MX-5 which is supposed to be "back to basics" and while it is a great car, it doesn't come close to feeling as mechanical as cars like these. Even my '01 Z3 3.0 feels like a different experience than anything modern. We don't need faster cars. We need cars that are more engaging to drive. I don't know if any new car will ever offer that again.
