The E39 is an amazing car, one of BMW's best. However, it has it's weaknesses, and the window regulators are one of them. They suck. When I bought the car, all four were bad, and I have replaced or repaired all of them at least once since then. Make sure you buy from a seller with some sort of warranty. Usually, if its a bad one, it will fail pretty quickly.
In part 2, I'll show you how to replace the rear window's regulator. It's not as easy to replace as the front, but you could still easily do one side in less than an hour, especially if you've done it before. Just take your time, you don't want to damage the door panel or the window glass. The hardest part is getting the trim piece out that divides the rear window. It requires a lot of force to pull it out and a hammer to put it back in. In part 1, I covered the front regulator.

That's so weird because I never had a problem on my Z, but I can see how that metal panel could be a pain. Way too many nuts/bolts.

What brand regulator did you purchase? Genuine BMW is costly but it seems aftermarket regulators are not good. Very hard to find OEM. Did you replace regulator and motor? I'm a fairly good weekend mechanic but not sure I want to attempt this or pay $150.00 for a local shop to install plus the part cost. Great video. Video quality and detailed instruction make a big difference. Good job.

I got aftermarket off eBay, but I did have them fail on me after about a year. It's just a luck of the draw type thing. I just tried to use my windows as little as possible. The motors last forever, but the regulators...not so much.
