Great info. I run meth on my boosted foxbody. Two things I can add to the article: 1. Meth is easily available for cheap. Running automotive window washer fluid (non-glycol) is a 50/50 mix. Here in the summer of Arizona I'm able to keep my IAT (Intake Air Temp) at 100 degrees under full boost. 2. I've had meth failure during a test and tune session at the track. Long story short, my boost signal to the controller failed. The vac line came off. My motor was saved because I added a failsafe in my tune. I added a tune in the event my IATs got above normal temps at full boost. The tune simply retards timing for these types of situations.

Why, this is basically it.... Water/meth is just a 50/50 (or whatever you want to run) mix. You are speaking of an auxiliary setup vs converting/using a regular fuel system basically.... He does cover meth as an external/piggy back setup so your pros and cons are still there. The only thing with water/meth is that you have a diluted mixture that helps cool and adds octane rating to your combustion mixture. Water won't directly give you power but will lower intake charge temperatures, as will methanol but with the added benefit of the increased octane. Bottom line - cheaper to run 50/50 mix, but you will always make more power with pure meth. These kits are a band-aid for insufficient fueling/cooling. I.E you don't want to upgrade fuelpumps/lines/injectors/rails so you jerry rig something liek this up, then you are in hard boost and you don't have a fail-safe setup and then you are out an engine.... I will be doing on myself just for the added safety, but by no means will I be relying on it. Gotta love how prone dat rotary is to knock/detonation.

pure methanol is best - kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnfOk6d6opeBb6M , and then add water if you are having piston heat issues, enough water to lower the egt sufficiently

Test your e85 if it is out of the pump. Buy a barrel or mix your own with sponsorship from an ethanol plant. Pump fuel is notorious for low %, it will cause major failure. Likely better to just run methanol for the strip.

@@shovel5180 US department of energy states E85 is 51-83 % ethenol... So no FUEL station will ever have 85%. Facts are uh hell of a think! Why if it's that important, you get an ethenol % reader.

All the newer gas stations built in my area had it ten years ago but I have seen it since the change oumoa it's not an option but ethanol free is everywhere

This works out great for me as I’m running a boosted stock block 350z HR @11psi 500rwhp. There’s no e85 upstate NY or over the Canadian border near me. With 11.1 compression on pump gas 93octane is worrisome.

Forgot to mention that e85 burns cooler on average 10 to 15 degrees cooler engine temps and not have to worry about meth injection pumps going out or nozzles clogging up.

Methanol injection can also be used as an alternative if your engine bay is too small to run an intercooler. You can also set the system to run on distilled water instead or a mixture of the two.

Methanol is readily available... all you need is winter windshield fluid, -25 is 35% methanol. -50 is 65% methanol. You can also get heet at any parts store, which is methanol.

You missed a few facts; E85 that is combusted puts a lower thermal load on the engine, like 15 - 20% lower peak EGT's over gas/methanol injection which lowers overall coolant/oil temps and reduced heat cycling of headers. This is especially useful for road raced cars. E85 also lowers in cylinder IAT better than gas (236 degree drop vs 75 degree in cylinder temp) and depending on where it's injected (port vs direct) it can also be calculated w/IAT sensor plumbed after the injection allowing for more accurate tuning. One of the negative issues E85 has that also wasn't mentioned is given that E85 stoich ratio is 9.765 air to 1 E85, there is a higher likelihood of oil dilution during cold start as a result of loose piston/ring to wall clearances during start-up so oil changes will need to be more frequent to maintain oil integrity and reduce engine wear. Otherwise, good info.

This was my reason for switching away from 93/meth. E85 will be a lot more reliable and safer for a high boosted engine, since with methanol not all of it gets distributed evenly in the cylinders

Mister Roy I just changed mine after running a few hundred miles with E85 on it and it didn’t smell like anything! Didn’t look milky just a nice amber color, I use dominator Amsoil 15w-50

@@ctbcrf50 I was a Amsoil dealer .i wish I hadn't stopped. That oil was incredibly good. It was cheaper in the long run because its last a long time and is better for the equipment in every way

Depends what car on the injectors. My stock pump would do good up to e30 e40 mix. But a upgraded fuel pump is a must imo regardless car.

Well yea if your boosting, but even stock injectors, and pumps on most newer cars will handle E85 just fine. Many just need a switch and tune and can be had for less than $600. If you're going Forced Induction, then you're already probably thinking about supporting fuel system mods especially if you plan on increasing that power later down the road. Run both, that's what I think I'm going to do.

_Correction:_ *Brazil don't have E85,* only E100. The cars are usually equipped with a traditional large tank (40~60 liters) and a smaller one (3~5 liters) with gasoline for cold start. The ECU usually sprays a little bit of gasoline every time the engine goes too lean (oxygen sensor must be working properly) while cold and that's it. When the temperatures are higher (20~25ºC), some cars don't even need gasoline to start. Some modern models got a fuel heater to allow ethanol to vaporize if the engine temperature is too low.

There should be a video of running both e85 on a flex fuel kit with a water meth injection. 7:35 I’d love to see what the Benefits of running both are and what the best approach would be.

Mehtanol injection DOES NOT have a higher initial cost. in some instances, the entire fuel system needs replaced for E85 .

@@NubsWithGuns that's not true, there's a initial base 30% more fuel demand with E85 , over conventional fuels . if you already have injectors , then need a 30% increase right off the bat, usually that requires new injectors. not all cars have E85 compliant fuel line, its smart of add a 2nd or 3rd filter tilter to E systems because they gel because E85 attracts water ... that's also not speaking on the oil degradation caused by E fuels . .. there more maint , more up front cost, and more used over time for the same result you could get from gasoline with additives, or even water methanol inj for its cooling benefits and octane increase . still care to argue .... there is a reason people agree with me, its because I'm right . so don't talk to people you don't know , and cant argue .

@@NubsWithGuns 😆. Like the OP said, say you have 1000cc injectors you will need to increase to 1300cc injectors you will need to make sure that your fuel pump lines etc are resistant to ethanol etc. I'm guessing you haven't built many cars running e85 or meth injection.

@@twistymcslide2 this. I found out the hard way, I’m not as technical as others so I had the bright idea of putting 8 gallons of e85 in my car. I’m 500 at wheels, stage 2 tune and I figured hey, let’s do this, put my car around 560 or so brahhhhhh. Well, bad idea. Car was missing BIG TIME, car violently jerked and wouldn’t accelerate. Was actually a bit scary. Long story short - had to cycle that fuel out, got me a dorch stage 2 HPFP, etc. That plus labor = $2500, if I want that b58 motor to take on those much heavier fuel demands by running an e mix with 93 octane. And of course you need custom tune. As an aside, while It’s more maintenance than WMI, you need a bette refuel system anyway if you want to upgrade turbo for example. I think youre solving more with a good quality high pressure fuel pump. WMI is better if you don’t plan on doing anything else to motor

I'm lovin' my E33 tune. There's not as much of a drop in mph as with full e85 and you still get more powa. Yeah you have to mix at the pump. But it's simple once you understand it. E85 tunes can be on demand, as well for street or strip. Cobb Accessport, SCT tuner, VersaTune. I was on our crappy AZ 91 oct map for 4 days and just flipped over to the E33 on my last fill up. Gigity. #Cornlife

In Ca. We don’t have 93, only 91 ( unless you find the occasional 100 for $10/gal ) My VW GTI requires 93 for tune. Since we have e10 in our gas already, I run 3gal E85/ 9gal 91 and the mix gives me my 93 without messing my tune or fuel delivery system. Tune is happy and I don’t notice any noticeable drop in mileage.

I'm next to you in Lakeland FL, I drive to the Tampa area to buy E85. I run E50-E55 and 100% meth on my fiesta ST. Its really makes a huge difference. Car makes like 235whp on 93oct and 280-285whp on E50+meth. Being direct injected, I don't have options for upgraded pumps or injectors, so meth has that going for it as well, it can be used to actually supplement a lacking fuel system. Make sure your using a newer pump (like the V2 AEM pump ) because those old surflo pumps never last with 100% meth, NO MATTER WHAT THE KIT SELLER TELLS YOU, unless its an Alocy control unit with is the best and most expensive. But def running both or a mix of fuels is awesome as long as your car can be tuned for all the changes (ford focus and fiesta ST's basically have factory standalone ecu's with cobb accessport). I run 29psi on E55+meth and 26psi on pump gas with less timing. A dyno "showdown" is what I was expecting as well, lol. But I'll let you side because "home team"

E85 will also drop IAT but only when it is vaporized in the combustion chamber; this is because both are alcohol based fuels. Unfortunately you can't monitor this temperature by logging but it is fact that it will lower intake temps as well as cylinder temps due to the alcoholic properties.

You know i would really love to see a video of how much boost you can run with plain 93 octane pump gas compared to the max amount of boost you could run with 93 octane and straight water injection. Steve morris is making big block's that run 37 pounds of boost on 93 octane pump gas and water injection

I'd like to mention that methanol if done smart is cheaper than any e85 conversion. Even the $200 methanol kits have fail safe sensors that you can use to trigger a less aggressive tune or a warning light. 20-f window washer fluid is 30% methanol and 70% water that you can get almost anywhere for under $2. If you require a higher methanol content, then you can add a bottle of HEET (pure methanol) for $1 from many stores. That's a 1.25~ gallon of 50/50 mix for under $3. Being an addition to regular pump gas, it's more economic and it can drastically change the powerband of any forced induction system because of the reduced temperature of the charge air. Not to mention it keeps your intake valves and pistons squeaky clean.

E85 has flex fuel. You can be on normal fuel one day, stick half a tank of e85 in mixed with normal fuel, or a full tank of e85. It just scales the tune according to the ethanol % detected.

@@321pstryk No you cant. E85 is 85% ethanol 15% gasoline/petrol. Flexfuel just lets you run regular fuel or E85 or a mid of both

@@321pstrykYou could do it, and im sure people have done it. Youd have to use specific plastics rubbers and metals your fuel system that wont break down. I did experiments with a calorimeter in school mixing ethanol and methanol with petrol/gasoline to measure energy densities Its probably not as common in street cars because it gets even worse milage than ethanol, its more corrosive than ethanol, and its far more toxic if you somehow ingest it. It also doesnt seem to be produced nearly as much as ethanol even though chemically speaking its probably cheaper to make, probably because the farming industry is pushing ethanol with their $$

Methanol also adds fuel, whereas e85 will max out injectors faster than normal gas and you will need a new fuel pump, bigger injectors, etc. New direct injected engines have this problem of maxing out injectors real quick and needing additional fueling measures ( 5th and 6th port or PI ). I went the meth injection way.

I'm pretty sure you're talking out your ass here. Methanol requires MORE fueling than Ethanol, both are typically 30%-40% more fuel required than regular gas but both you will need to modify your system unless going with an auxiliary setup. I believe methanol actually uses 5-10 percent more fuel than typical E85 (depending on grade), but there are more gains to be had with methanol as it has a higher(?) latent heat which gives lower IATs (I believe, it's been some time since I've came across the thread(s)). Direct injectors have this issue because they need a certain percentage of the fuel/duty cycle just to cool the injectors to prevent damage.

True! The 2011 and later BMW 335i's have this issue. We can only run 30% ethanol on stock fuel pump, and 50% without port injection. Im probably going to get water/meth injection

Just to fix, in Brazil we run ethanol 96% (4 % in fact is water) from the pump, because of this we need a little tank of gasoline extra, just to cold start. We actually don’t have e85 on pump.

Do you have to upgrade your tune with a methanol injection kit ? I'm told you don't have to upgrade the tune and you will still get the benefits of the methanol injection , so if I'm not altering the tune and the methanol injection kit fails I should be safe from detonation since the tune was not changed for the methanol

I get 30mpg with e85 on the highway in my 1.8t. heated e85 to coolant temps for vaporization. Couldnt make it detonate if i tried. It needs less timing (good thing), i make more power, it still cools the charge. Once ethanol's heated to 170°f the molecules break their bond from the droplets, those separated molecules are now cold, and they wanna get warm again, so they steal the heat out of the surrounding boost charge. Ever see an intake mani frost over on a methanol injected big block chevy? Its not because that fuel was that cold, its because that fuel got hot, separated, absorbed more heat, repeat. Drops of fuel arent exposed to enough air to absorb heat to its full saturation. So you ask how can you get your droplets exposed to more air if your intake temps arent already 180°? You guessed it😘 purposely heat the fuel. Alcohol will never lose its heat to the air outside of it, it will evaporate instead. The molecules on the edge of the droplet will keep absorbing heat until they have enough heat-energy to break their bond from the droplet, which results in a cooling effect. Now the droplet and the molecule that just left are now cold and exposed to more air to absorb heat from. This hapoens repeatedly, until all the droplets become completely separated into their own individual heat hungry molecules that cant divide any further. The charge might be ice cold at that point but it is far more explosive and energy dense, than cold drops of fuel injected that only absorb small amounts of heat from the surrounding air. All in all, youll likely never get to the point where your e85 has been so saturated with heat that it cant absorb any more. This is why small framed turbo cars running way out of their efficiency range can make so much power on e85, its because e85 thrives in that boost heat. Only vapors are explosive. Liquid fuels are not explosive, hence why we waste 90% of our fuel out the tail pipe. A fully vaporized mixture is extremely explosive. Even if its vaporization didnt cool the charge, youd still be making more power, and mbt could be closer to tdc which is ideal since you want the whole explosion to happen after tdc. My personal experience is that heating e85 doesnt lower its motor octane rating, it just makes it more useable. Ive logged my knock sensors and they werent ever over 12volts. The one thing most important about heating e85 is heat/ ethanol percentage control, and dyno tuning for specific heat ranges and ethanol percentages. I havent done either which i guess is the reason my rod piston broke in half from high cylinder pressure. That night it broke i reduced timing 3° because it was losing power in higher gears when building boost as if i was far beyond mbt. With my ko4 hybrid, tube mani and 2.5" dp i was spinning all 4 in my heavy ass b6. The car went fucking ham. Im building a 12:1 compression forged bottom end and going back for more after some dyno tuning lmao.

Yes, you are absolutely right - spirits burn faster than pump gas. That is exactly why they need less ignition timing advance.

2 days ago I supercharged my 2020 mustang gt. My car is knocking and pulling timing because the gas around here sucks. No 85 here. I'm really considering a water meth kit.

Hi guys...I've been tuning in Brasil for a long time. E100 at a cold start is tricky in the winter. Even OEM ECU uses gasoline injection when cranking. Even driving the first 5min might be challenging. We've got great results with Stand-Alone units that are VE based (Req_Fuel). If anyone needs help I'm more than glad to give away some tips. Ex: E100 @ 36F starting at 1 crank cycle.

6:25 GAURDS BIULT... oh and e85 cools down the air charge at the ports. Methanol injection is further back thats why it registers at a IAT SENSOR.

E85 will have better drivability off boost and when spooling turbos etc because you can run more ignition timing everywhere not just on boost.

Glen M Why? The water cools the charge air and combustion chambers without adding fuel. Methanol cools the charge are too, but not to extent that a water mix would without running way too rich. That's why people use a 50/50 or 70/30 mix.

Here in Michigan E-85 can be anywhere from E-55 to E-85 .. You can put half a tank of E-85 in your car and half a tank of E-10 if you are on a Trip .

Flex fuel refers a GM system that uses a sensor to detect the amount of Ethonal (our alcohol as it is labeled in HP Tuners tune files) so the tune can reference different tables accordingly.

Just won a new subscriber lol! I just switched my cobra swapped Mach back to 93 cause its so hard to find e85 and Im looking into a meth kit to run some more boost. But I might have to try your last suggestion lol, Ive got an expensive return style fuel system already so this would be great for me!

Bit late, but if you run both and lets say your in mid race and your out of meth can you still floor it while only on e85 at that moment? even though you're tuned to both e85 and meth injection.

If you run out of Meth at any point you'll get a lean condition (depending on how much meth you are using and how much you had to lean out fueling due to the added meth). Because of this, you will want to avoid wide-open throttle to prevent engine damage.

I was always told that running both is pointless as Ethanol/Methanol were nearly identical. The only difference was that Methanol had one more octane point over ethanol (106 vs 105). The benefits of one extra point of octane vs the risk of a methanol system failure just isn't worth it.

I live in BF me and my friend won’t ever shut up about how he wants to tune his car on E 85, which is fantastic good for him. The closest E85 pump to us is 300 miles away… I keep telling him to get it tuned normally just add water methanol add any type of fuel additive booster and you’ll be happy but no his plan is to store 55 gallon drums of E85 because apparently he’s an oil tycoon now

Brazil runs E100, but it is hydrous ethanol rather than anhydrous. and regular is E25

I live in the pacific northwest and have had 4 meth pumps seized,,, easy to repair but you could lose your engine,,, The local speed shops are afraid to setup 1800cc+ meth systems ,,,unreliable and hard to tune for plus 30psi boost... I suggest mounting the pump inside the car away from outside weather.

I look at it if you have e85 close by then deff e85. If no e85 then port meth. I run e85 with chargepipe meth for iat.

You dont have a knock sensor? Id never own a road car that was dependent on wm injection or e85. I use wm injection just so i can push harder. but i can dd without it no problem.

sergsrt8 if you’re drifting then you’re gay. Don’t drift. If you’re road racing then you could get baffles for your meth tank to keep the pickup submerged.

I heard that the 50/50 meth water is great for daily driving. My big question is- is there a scale or digital meter that i can add on to give me a fuel gage on full and empty ?

Some meth kits come with a gauge that'll tell u when the fluid is low. If it doesn't come with one, then u can buy one for a decent price

2 questions: can you use washer window fluid? (I read somewhere people have). Lastly, is this the same meth that Walter white used to make blue meth? Lol jk I had to ask that last one. Love your videos and learned a lot from them

Windshield washer fluid is a bit of an old-shcool tactic we've all tried before, but it does work as it is made of methanol. However, I believe it is not always recommended by the methanol injection kit manufacture.

odd to talk meth and not water // water meth ... it has higher latent heat index and is free cooling /antiknock... also also E85 conversions cost heaps if you decide to do them properly.. often this means bigger pump injectors perhaps a flex fuel sensor . water injection can improve milage if you take the time make it happen when you mix water meth it helps evaporate the water a little . and the methanol extends the upper limit of your fuel system .I've seen heaps of ghetto water injection work great

You can add more timing with e85 so you could actually see gains but mpg will prob fall 45%

LS1 compression ratio is only 10.5:1 too low to get any real benefit. The newer cars with 11.5:1 and higher are getting measurable gains though.

This has been done. On a 500hp ls you'll gain about 40hp on e85 due to being able to advance timing 3 to 4 degrees.

anyone know how to wire in the AEM meth failsafe into a AEM EMS? Pin #34 switch to ground and AEM meth green wire output connect to ground for fail safe, not a lot of details or info..hmmm any help TIA :) Thanks for the spill I'm already heading to meth and E85 on a flex fuel sensor.

Hi can you help me I am looking at your water and methanol kits I am looking to use them with a nitrous kit. I know most user methanol and water kit so they can advance the timing to produce more power but I am not looking to advance my timing . I am looking at it so i can use the w&m kit to call down the chamber so I don't have to pull the timing. If i dont go with the water and methanol kit am i better off running a separate fuel cell & putting E85 into that then going to my fuel solenoid. If that is the case do i just put e85 into the fuel sell or do I need to mix it with a bit of petrol. Say 1 part e85 and 3 parts petrol . So a 1to3 ratio. Can u help me work this out . Like I said I know people that use water and methanol so they can then advance the timing spark and produce more power. But i am just going to use the e85 only when spraying nitrous. So i am not sure what i can get away with . I no e85 is a lot colder even to the touch compared to petrol. I use 93 to 98 ron pump gas in the UK. But i am new to E85 , but been told it helps with the temperature in the chamber and again with the spark which with nitrous guys that key. As if i can get this right i dont need to pull timing at all. Or if i get a stand-alone ECU i could run advance timing. But for now i am just looking at e85 as a way of me to get around putting timing from the engine and I only spray my nitrous hear and there. So i fill up with pump gas petrol . Then if i need power i spray my nitrous. But i have to pull timing out even with out spraying nitrous timing has to be pulled so that way when you do spray it don't go bang. I am looking at E85 as away round this. I hope this makes sense to you and if u can help

Hi Bob, I don't know if you monitor this old video but I have a question. I have a GN also, not on methanol though. What do you think about Caspers Electronics audible knock sensor? The more the knock the louder it chirps. Some have told me that by the time you here it chirp it could be to late if the methanol developed catastrophic failure. I just bought it but I haven't put the unit in yet because I parked the car years ago when my son was born. What I want to do is put that audible knock sensor on my 18 f150 ecoboost which is on methanol but Caspers said they have no info as far as installing it on an ecoboost. I'm very leery about getting a meth tune as you mentioned. Anyway I just wanted to see if you have any knowledge of the sensor. As far as I can tell by my datalog times there is no hp benefit at all to be had if you just add methanol to a 93 gas tune

What is not mentioned is that if you spray meth or water/meth, afrs will go richer, so you have to decrease your pump gas injection to keep a good afr and not flood the engine. That transition is not very nice. I had a kit suck air while launching and therefore hurting an engine.

E85 as not a cheap race gas. Its not even a gas. Its alcohol. The cooling properties are far superior to race gas. I use E98 in our race car and it craps all over race gas and meth injection. Meth injection is too inconsistant and unreliable. It can make good power but the systems are fiddly. If you are going to use methanol. Just tune the car for methanol and use the appropriate pump/injectors. This video wasnt much of a back to back test...

+austin nichols In my car, the whole entire fuel system needed to be upgraded before I could even think about running E85- the pumps, had to run braided lines, change reg AND injectors. Very expensive in my case

+austin nichols An E85 set up needs flow at least 20-30% more than pump gas, so if your still running stock injector size your engine is a grenade waiting to blow. On my engine you go from 42#er's to 60#er's bare minimum!

Depends on the first of all, fuel system and ECU, nothing to do with a motor (btw, you should lookup the definition of a motor vs an engine, very big difference and shows how much one knows when talking on the subject, very simple mistake for those who aren't in the know but tells a lot). The BRZ is a brand new vehicle from subaru/toyota with very nifty/complex ecu maps and algorithms. Also, it has a very abnormal fuel system. It uses staged injectors - a set of direct injectors and a set of sideport. Therefore, you usually have more than enough fuel if you aren't chasing numbers on the dyno/made big mods. And Also, you would NOT want to run 20-30% more fuel, MINIMUM 30%, top end, closer to 40, 45 percent especially if running methanol....

Golden Retriever Yeah, and e85 is better than pure ethanol. Ethanol has less energy so it's harder to ignite at low temperatures, so the 15% of gasolind in it gets better start up and better mileage. The better mileage is from the better stechiometric ratio. E85 consumes 30% more and e98( straight ethanol ) 50%

What I want to know is, how is running meth injection going to effect the A/F ratio out the tail pipe and what target figures should I be aiming for with the wideband O2 sensor once I fit the system on a pump gas set up? I'm considering buying an Alkicontrol kit, so I can run straight meth injection, any thoughts there? Heard anything good or bad about their systems? Or is another system better? I like the way the AEM kit works with the 2 dials to adjust when it comes on and when it's at full spray. If I swap to E85, what target figures should I be aiming for there? I run a big boost RB30ET and with pump gas it seems to make the most power around 11.8 A/F ratio, but I run it at 11.2 to add a little safety net. I know I've asked a lot here, sorry- just trying to work out the next step with the car and what I'm going to do. Also, if I DO end up running both E85 AND meth injection or water/ meth inj- what target figures should I be looking for there roughly??? Don't know who's meth kit I'm going to use just yet, so I'll ask for both options (IF I decide to get an Alki- control kit I will run straight meth)

Your right about the real AFR being very different with alcohols 6:1 for pure meth 9:1 for ethanol. But remember a engine running pure ethanol and an engine running gas will produce exhaust with the same amount of oxygen in it. Injecting meth will not change what the afr needs to be but the ecu will need to know whats going on and inject less fuel to balance out the meth you sprayed in. Your target afr as it appears on the sensor will not change alot for e85 but some people tend to run it a bit richer to take advantage of its cooling properties and the fact its harder to vapourise all that fuel so maybe run 11:1 and try cutting a little fuel out later?

Your other issue with tuning AFR for meth is that it's hard to get a good wideband that will have a wide enough operating range/values. With a standard/average wideband you won't be able to read rich enough to tune properly. Make sure you cover that before you go much further. Stoichiometric for petrol gas is 14.7:1, I'm sure it's out there with a quick google. But again, most sensors really don't read rich enough for alcohol.
