Great comparison, but would LOVE to see how advancing the timing to fully take advantage of the fuel change would affect the results. That's the whole reason for changing to a "better" fuel right?
@LMBC6Brian5 ай бұрын
Nothing will change at all if you arent seeing any knock and not adding any timing. Period. If you are seeing knock on a lower octane fuel, then a higher octane will help eliminate that knock and you will make the power you were tuned to make at whatever spark advance was setup.

I think it would’ve been better if timing was optimized as well. Nobody is going to use those fuels without going to the trouble of adjusting timing as well.
@kenny2405 ай бұрын
I wonder how well this would work combining the nitro/meth mix with 93 octane instead of E85. And how much it might affect the knock threshold of an engine. I know a few applications where this might be more cost effective than using C16 or some other pure race fuel as a means to pickle a fuel system. Applications where compression is on the extreme end (14:1+)

@CamoSnowman5 ай бұрын
I'm surprised the ethanol made more power all things being the same and just switching fuel. Obviously the dyno doesn't lie but neither does physics. Ethanol is less power dense than gas. So, theoretically, it with exact same timing and stoichiometric fuel ratios. I believe ethanol should make less power? From my understanding ethanol has a higher octane rating and cooling effect so you can put more timing to it and have more air density thus creating more power than gas. Any other ideas on this I'd love to know.

@deweberis27095 ай бұрын
I have my restrictions to these stand alone fuel comparisons 🤔 [1] People use fancy fuels to increase the pre-detonation treshold and its kind of useless unless a turbo engine with optimized tunning is used to make the most of it. Otherwise its a waste of money to get those small gains. Old factory stock ECU won't provide the tunning amplitude w/ spark intensity and fuel flow adjustments. [2] Pre-mixing fuels 'by-hand' doesn't guarantee an homogeneous mixture at a molecular level. Some fuel might be predominant at the botton of the tank. [3] Also don't forget street pump gas also has some Ethanol in it at an undisclosed and variable percentage.

@ziggybmw5 ай бұрын
No, the opposite. E85 has a higher octane rating than typical pump gas, which means you can advance the timing more vs gasoline due to the higher threshold for knock. That's where the increase in power on E85 comes from. Granted, not all setups on all engines will see a big increase, but it "tends" to. It also has a better latent heat of evaporation, which helps "pull" more heat out of the incoming air, therefore lowering the incoming air temps, increasing power still. This is all why boosted engines LOVE e85.
