Hay Ealan, just wanted to thank you for taking the time to shoot this vid. I took receipt of the Denon A-110 roughly 8 weeks back. I had been having issues attempting to properly set up the 7.1.6 After watching your video, I now understand the required path to take to tell the amp I wanna use two mono blocks for my main L/R fronts. After weeks of pulling my hair out (and there is not much of that left at my age) I finally get it. The A-110 is a full onboard 13.2 capable AVR but my main fronts are rated at 300W and the Denon can only reach half that, so I picked up a set of QUAD mono's with a max out of 500W. Finally I get to appreciate the capabilities of the B&W's I own. Thanks again. Yours Kevin from Glasgow/Scotland/UK

Hi great video question please if you don’t mind. I just finished setting up my home theater and I’m first running a Sony A90J 65 inch OLED, my question is I’m using a Denon 3700h receiver with two Klipsch RP-800F’S front speakers and two R-41sa’s as the height speakers which are mounted to the wall on each side of the tv cause I didn’t like when you place them on top of the floor speakers and aim it at the ceiling to get the overhead affect. I also have two Klipsch RP-600m bookshelf speakers on stands as the rear and I’m using the tv as the center channel until I get dedicated center speaker, there is a 10 inch woofer as well. Now the entire setup uses hard wired connections and I just bought two Denon 150 home wireless speakers and I would like to use them as rear height speakers to make it a 7.1 but so far I’m not seeing a way in the Denon setup to add two wireless speakers it only gives options for connecting more wired speakers. So is it possible to do this? Thank you so much
@ealanosborne
@ealanosborne 3 жыл бұрын
Ah…looking at the specs online, it looks like the 150 wireless speakers aren’t designed to be integrated into a traditional wired home theater system. It can be a part of a whole house audio system for music streaming through HEOS technology, but that’s not the same. And the 150’s can be used as rear surrounds for the DHT-S716H sound bar, but not in a wired system. Just runs off different technology. Would be pretty awesome if it could be used within a traditional home theater, but the technology just isn’t there…yet? 🤷‍♂️

Yes, in theory, the pre outs should just always be “on” when you connect an RCA cable to it, since you are interrupting the audio signal before it hits the internal amp. Have you tried the Custom amp assign mode? I wonder if that could help with assigning the fronts to be powered by an external amp? I wish I was more familiar with that beast of an AVR, but it’s definitely more customizable than its less expensive counterparts.

There’s no way to specify a 5.1.4 with surround backs. If you happen to have your surrounds behind you in a 5.1.4 configuration, they would still be considered surrounds since you don’t have 7 ear-level speakers. It’s just a matter of labeling and identifying speakers. But in the software, you would still just use 5 floor speakers in the amp assign section, and in speaker Config you would still have 2 surrounds, and “none” for surround backs, even though they are physically in the surround back position. I wanted to assign my front L & R to the pre outs. I couldn’t figure how to do it! I have a 5.1.4 system with my 4 height speakers installed in ceiling in a TF & TM configuration. TM because the middle heights are right above our heads. The only way I could figure out to set the in ceiling above our heads as TM was to set the front in ceiling as Front Heights (instead of Top Front). Setting the front height as TF only allows TR for the in ceiling above our heads. My question… will there be a significant difference in sound using FH & TM vs TF & TR in my settings? FYI, the Marantz SR8015 replaces a Sony STR-AZ5000ES which suffered from an annoying hiss when using 360SSM. Sadly as Sony has the lead when it comes to acoustic processing. But the Marantz has a warmer sweeter sound which I really love.
@ealanosborne
@ealanosborne 11 ай бұрын
FH vs TF etc won’t affect the sound itself for better or worse. It’s more of a placeholder or preliminary setting. The more important factor is running Audyssey room correction, because that will get the timing and levels right, no matter where the speakers happen to be. Also to note, Auro 3D setups aren’t supported when you choose “top front” or “top rear.” But it will be supported when you choose “front height” and “rear height.” Not sure if you care about Auro 3D, but just thought I’d mention that too. 😁

Amp Assign Mode 9.1, 11.1, or 13.1 I believe all work, you just need to select "5ch" for your "Floor" and that's it, since you don't have any heights or surround backs, etc. Then back in the "Speaker Config" page, just make sure you have selected front speakers, a center speaker, a subwoofer, and 2 surround speakers. I think it is possible, although I believe the only caveat is 7.2.4 takes up all its processing power, so you wouldn’t be able to watch a movie AND listen to something in Zone 2 simultaneously. But that’s probably not going to be an issue for most. But yes, you can connect an A7 to power your bed layer speakers, and use the internal amps for your heights. It would be the 11.1 amp assign mode, 5 Ch + SB, 4 heights, and assign the front L/R to be powered externally (via pre outs).

No, you’re not missing anything. Typically you’ll only use “top middle” if you have only 2 ceiling speakers you’re dealing with. Or if your AVR can support 6 height channels. Otherwise - regardless of placement - 4 ceiling speakers would still be considered top front and top rear. Although there is “SHL” and SHR” in the software for side-mounted height speakers, which you could experiment with. But my guess is it won’t make much of a difference, since in the end, running Audyssey will account for how far away the speakers are from the main listening position anyway. 🤘

But for now, I'm overjoyed knowing the 3-channel ext. amp is in line, getting a signal and working. Did a quick pink noise test and while the LCR remained at the same volume level, I was able to lower the gain on about 5 of the remaining 8 channels a bit and still reach my target decibel level at the main listening area. That suggests more power is being distributed to those channels from the AVR. Based on that point alone, there has been an improvement. (Tears of happiness 😊). Thanks again for your response Ealan!

If I have it correct, you’re wanting to set up a 5.x.2 system, right? The software only allows for Bi-amping using the SBR and SBL speaker terminals, which is great, since you aren’t using surround back speakers at all. So you would connect the hi frequencies of your 8060’s to the front L/R speaker terminals, then connect the low frequencies to the SBR/SBL terminals. 🙌 Make sense?

Thanks for the kind words! Well, it’s just a step in the evolution of your home theater, really. Since the x6700h has a rating of 140 watts per channel (2 channels driven), so probably more like 90 watts per channel when everything is working simultaneously. So if you have speakers that work best around 100-125 watts per channel, using the internal amps should be fine for awhile. But it does make a difference to start with the front three speakers (left, center, right) being powered externally. It allows the Denon to process audio better when there are less speakers to power on its own. More details come out, dynamics are more dramatic (loud parts are louder, quiet parts are more intelligible), etc. But honestly, it’s not exactly worth it until you get more expensive speakers that need more power to really come alive. Like speakers that can handle 150-300 watts (or more!). Then you can get some external amps that can supply that kind of power to really let the speakers sing! Make sense? 😁

@ealanosborne 2 жыл бұрын
Think of it as the pre outs being in the signal path on the way to the internal amps. So an electrical current will make its way through the circuit board, pass by the pre outs, and terminate at the internal amps. So if you introduce an RCA cable into a pre out into the equation - essentially interrupting the signal and now sending it to an external amp instead - that essentially deactivates the internal amp associated with that channel (Left, Right, Center, etc). What is the best way to connect all three to get lossless audio through my speakers, i know the 820 has two hdmi outputs one is audio and one is video , would i connect hdmi audio out to receiver and the hdmi video out straight to tv or would i use the passthough on the receiver with one hdmi cable to receiver, or is there another way. Any help would be great. Thanks again...Phil
@ealanosborne
@ealanosborne 2 жыл бұрын
Well, it looks like the 2300w doesn’t support eARC, so you wouldn’t be getting a true Atmos audio signal (via Dolby True HD) if you had the Panasonic 820 connected to your TV. But as long as the 820 is connected directly to the 2300w, it definitely supports true Dolby Atmos and DTS:X audio, it has a great digital to analog converter, 4K video pass-through and supports lossless and hi-res music formats. So that’s your best bet. 👍

Hmmm…I think you might be out of luck here, just because of software limitations. As soon as you select the 11.1 Amp Assign (which you need to do since you’re running 7.x.4), it automatically assumes you want to power Front L/R or Rear Heights with that external amp. 😬 The only way to externally power Surround Backs is if you ALSO power either Front L/R or Rear Heights

So I'm debating if the better setup would rear height on back wall/ceiling angled downward or 4 ceiling mounted atmos and no rear surround. Would it make more sense to have rear height or ceiling? Also would you assign the rear height speakers as rear surround in a 7.1.2 or as 5.1.4 rear height atmos?

Yeah, I’d go with 5.1.4 since it completes the 3D immersion with 4 heights, as opposed to only 2 heights in a 7.1.2 setup. And yes, rear heights on ceiling angled down 👍🎉

Hmmm…yeah, those are pretty nice speakers, especially with the bi-wiring option, and 150w RMS power handling. The s760 will do a decent job, since the RB speakers are super sensitive (97dB), but I would honestly start with Denon’s X series with those speakers, if at all possible. Like the x1700h or X2700h, depending on your budget. Or if you plan on expanding, maybe even opt for the x3700h, since that gives you the option of using a full set of pre outs, being able to power your speakers with external amps some years down the road. An investment that will last you a long time.🤘

As I have eleven speakers (2 front, 1 center, 2 surround, 4 dolby atmos, 2 high), the assign mode would be 11.1 ch. Emotiva XPA Two Gen 3 would support 2 fronts and Emotiva BasX A3 would support 1 center and 2 surrounds. Would you be so kind and tell me how all setups and connections should look like? Thank! Krzysztof
@ealanosborne
@ealanosborne 2 жыл бұрын
In amp assign, Floor should be set to 5 Ch + SB to activate the preout assignment. Choose 4 height channels (and choose either "front" or "top", depending on if you have mounted or in-ceiling speakers) and choose Front for the preout assignment. Go back to the Speaker Config page and make sure the diagram looks like your setup. The physical RCA cable connections is pretty simple - just plug in to Front Left, Front Right and connect those to your XPA Two amp. Center, Surround Left, and Surround Right preouts get connected to the BasX A3. And that should do it! The only preouts you have to assign are Front Left and Front Right. Center, Surround Left, and Surround Right don't need to be assigned, they're just ready for a signal if an RCA cable is connected to its corresponding preout.

It should automatically switch to whatever the native mix is that you are watching. If it's mixed and broadcasted in Atmos, it should decode it as such. If it's a DTS:X mix (like the Jurassic World franchise 4K Blu-ray discs, for example) it'll decode it as DTS:X, etc.

Hello, thanks for the video. If we are talking about the Denon AVC-X3700H specifically. Because the Manual states that they are disconnected and turned off ONLY if you choose the Amp Assign to full Pre Amp. Can you be wrong here? @ealanosborne 2 жыл бұрын
Well, only the new x3800h/x4800h/Cinema 50 can do 6 height channels. Otherwise, yes - when using a combination of internal and external amps, only the front L/R or Rear Heights can be assigned. You can still use external amps for all the other speakers - center, surrounds, surround backs, front heights. It’s just a software limitation when dealing with front speakers or rear heights. Lastly, depending on if you have a 2020 or newer AVR, preamp mode will disable all internal amps and you can power all speakers with external amps (if you have enough).

Hello Ealan, I am seeking for experience of 5.1.4 setup like shown at 08:10, "2 Front Height + 2 Top Middle". Unfortunately I am unable to put anything behind the MLP due to the skew attic ceiling of the roof. The 2 Top Middle is slightly in front (~50 cm) of my MLP, and the 2 Front Height is a no brainer above my fronts. The ceiling is 268 cm heigh. Is it worth it for Atmos, or should I stick to only 5.1.2 (with 2 Top Middle)?
@ealanosborne
@ealanosborne 2 жыл бұрын
I think you would still be able to get a sense of movement with some Atmos height effects even if your top middle heights are slightly in front of your MLP. So that way you still have a sense of audio from above (with top middle) and the illusion that your TV is huge with front heights. 😊

Good level? Like 1) volume? Or 2) height? If 1, those Atmos speakers need lots of help, so try and boost the upward firing channels as much possible (without distorting the signal, of course). If 2, place them at ear level if you can, or perhaps a little above ear level so the Atmos bounce is a little more pronounced? Definitely something to experiment with since no one’s listening space is the same. 👍

Hey thanks for the compliment! And yes, that is a software limitation of the X4700H, either assigning the front 2 speakers OR rear height speakers to be powered externally. I honestly wish you COULD mix and match to your heart’s content, but no. Although if it’s in your budget to get a BasX A4 as well, then you could put it in Preamp mode and power all speakers externally. But until you can do that, I would power all your bed layer speakers with the A7 anyway and let the Denon power the height channels. Depending on the content, the height channels will most likely be activated only sporadically and more subtly. So having your 7 bed layer speakers externally amped is a better way to go in the meantime. 👍

Hi! 👋 I wouldn’t worry about cramming surrounds backs behind. I’d just stick with 5.1.4 with the surrounds to the sides of the couch. I would go for 4 heights, since it really does add a better sense of 3D immersion with the ability for height effects to move between the front abs rear heights. I would mount the rears straight above your couch pointing down at you, and the front heights angled up 30 degrees from where your head is when seated (if possible). That may translate to being high up on the wall or on the ceiling, depending on how far away your couch is from the TV and how high your ceilings are. 👍
