“Rocking Heels: Live at Metal Church” is the document of a very special concert in the idyllic setting of Wacken Church. Released on August 11th, 2023 on earMUSIC, it is the first release of the live series “Rocking Heels”. It is available as a Ltd. 2LP Vinyl Edition, CD mini LP replica and on Digital.
In front of just 300 handpicked fans, this onetime-only event opened the Wacken Open Air Festival in 2016. Tarja presents unique arrangements of rock and heavy metal classics by her favourite artists including “Numb” by Linkin Park, In Flame’s “Alias”, Metallica’s “The Unforgiven”, songs by Joe Satriani and Slipknot as well as a Nightwish song and Tarja originals.
The first single, a cover of Linkin Park’s “Numb”, perfectly reflects the intimate setting of this concert. Tarja's operatic prowess and hauntingly beautiful vocals add an extra layer of ethereal magic to an already powerful masterpiece. The song explores themes of emotional isolation, frustration, and the struggle to find one's identity in a world that often feels overwhelming. The lyrics convey a sense of detachment and numbness, reflecting the emotional struggles and inner turmoil of the protagonist.

What I love about Tarjas cover versions: She never tries to simply copy the original artist & song but offers an alternative version with her very own style instead. That is what a cover is. People who try to copy aren't doing a cover. When you look at, for example, the Metallica album Garage Inc, that was an album of covers where Metallica were performing other band's songs in Metallica style.

I mean, she kind of can't do the songs the same way. She's always said that she's no good at a normal rock/ metal voice &, after over 25 years, anybody who knows her is expecting her classical sound, anyway. But, she definitely has a good ear for getting the songs to work in her favor.

Tarja will always be Tarja. I try to never miss out whenever she's playing in my area. She's just one of a kind. I love her voice and her stage presence. Heck, even I took classical singing lessons during all my middle and high school years because I was so blown away by her in her late Nightwish era (I started with singing lessons in elementary school but was more into pop/rock vocals in the beginning).

There is so much going on here... to hear a thing like this now in 2024, after all those years when I first started listening to Nightwish and Linkin Park back in 2006. Tarja, who is the best female singer for me, from one of my favourite bands Nightwish, singing a great song by Linkin Park in an actual church, and they called it Metal Church, just like the name of that good band called by the same name.

Freaking amazing. This album release did come as a huge surprise to me but I'm so happy about it. It's been great to have many releases lately from Tarja, her Best Of album last December (2022), Outlanders very soon June 26th (2023) and now this album too and hopefully the "dark christmas part II" album later this year. As a Tarja fan I'm very happy. Would love to have this released as a live dvd/blu-ray too.
