This is... A fun children's story. That is the feeling I had from the moment they landed and took a tour of the city, instead of say, a secure location to cleanly establish diplomatic relations without any threats of external forces causing a disaster; as I would think would logically happen in a first contact situation. It kind of made me nostalgic about old children books I saw growing up, seeing things like kids visiting an alien planet that has never seen humans before, and the first thing they do is visit a theme park to ride the space coasters and everyone acting like its no big deal.

I've seen a few like that. Maybe not what I always want to hear, but a sparse spread of idealism isn't bad. This story had some unrealistic humanity, but it positively glowed with that same imagination it was talking about

I agree. It is a good story though. However, i would disagree with humanity being peaceful. I feel like our ambassadors misrepresented humanity in this story. When Mino-6 interfaced with the terminal in the library, i expected some questions about human conflicts. Mino, i can believe, not having access to certain data and not knowing what to look for, can see him reacting excitedly at the amount of knowledge.

What took me out of it was the aliens breathing Earth's atmosphere without ever even bothering to scan it? How could she be surprised by the nitrogen levels? You can measure that from space, at a pretty long distance! Unfortunately, a lot of HFY is like this. You have to avoid thinking too hard about... really anything, and just enjoy the silly stories for what they are.

Right, yeah, good story, but, like, they just gloss over the absolute horror. What would a human do once removed from their atmosphere? I guess the assumption is that whatever makes the aliens hallucinate is required for human survival, but that's improbable. So its reasonable to believe the aliens can produce an atmosphere humans can live in but that doesn't cause hallucinations. So, this story is horrifying. Like, just imagine getting off your space ship on an alien world and then maybe 5 minutes later you just can't imagine anymore.

Invention and science requires imagination, it's fundamental to problem solving. I don't see how a species could even have technology let alone be space fairing without that ability.

@jakeand9020

Same occurred to me, without being able to imagine something that doesn't exist, how could they make something that doesn't exist? Then, maybe it's like some other stories where all technology are gifts from a precursor race. I suppose that could work with the no contact until spaceflight as that would show them to be familiar enough with the precursor artifacts to be worthy. That's really the only scenario I can think of where they could progress without imagination. Or, perhaps it's an unexplored great filter where once a species advances to a certain stage they evolve to lose that ability and need drugs to duplicate it. Where in the technological progress that would occur would vary, but would seem in some way related to space flight.
@TheJadeFist
@TheJadeFist 14 күн бұрын
@@jakeand9020 Or like maybe you reach a certain level of technology and run up against the boundaries that the laws of physics will allow? When all problems are solved, you no longer need to solve them? Even then, it's hard to imagine, you still need people to imagine to run a business or a military, or any organized groups. Prepare for any safety hazards or simply or realize you're going to run out of X supply in Y time, and decide to buy it now, or to wait and hope it's cheaper later or just anything like that. Like how do you even do resource gathering with no imagination of any kind? Or even architecture? Some one has to have the idea in their head, of what the buildings will look like, and what it'll need to meet the demands of the usage. Do you import water from off world, or do you drill and pull it from the ice? What's the cost benefit comparison to either approach for your colony's needs? Without imagination, all you'd be left with is pure instinct, like bees building a hive vs designing a colony, and that can only get you so far.

I really liked this story. But gee whiz, the quality of the writing was all over the place. It didn't start off too badly, but the middle sunk into a hole of, overuse of adjectives, group hugs, mutual admiration societies, and multiple plot holes, etc, that it seemed almost machine in origin. Fortunately, towards the end it built up steam again to arrive at a satisfactory conclusion. This could have been a classic in SF humour, but the writer did not have the story telling experience to pull it off... Starbound. It would be most appreciated if you could run a much more critical eye over your stories ,and maybe do some judicious editing, or even suggest some story changes before you hand it over to the narrators. You have 2 of the best narrators on KZbin... They deserve stories worthy of their talents.....

Also, how about uh, audiobooks? I think that is right. Make and audiobook of you entire collection if that isn’t too much trouble. If I may make a suggestion. Have more than one voice actor, so the female narrator doesn’t try to sound like a male character but fails. I would gladly pay for your audiobooks if you made them. You are such a great storyteller.
