How strong can earthquakes REALLY get? Watch this video to find out!
Special thanks to ‪@CaSeismograph‬ for allowing me to use their seismograph readings! This channel is the only 24/7 live homemade seismograph in the world and is located near Los Angeles, California.
I hope these simulations will bring more earthquake awareness around the world and educate the general public about potential earthquake related hazards. All these simulations take into consideration only the shaking caused in close proximity to the earthquake's epicenter. Also, a friendly reminder that for this video's purpose, I have shortened the actual duration of the simulation. Any earthquake over M 7.5 could last for more than a minute. The great Tohoku quake that hit Japan in March 2011 had a magnitude of 9 and lasted for about 5 minutes.
-------------------
This project took me more than a week to finish, and I would so appreciate if you guys could SHARE this video on social media or any other apps! :)
-------------------
These earthquake simulations were created in Blender 3D with the Bullet Constraints Builder (BCB - a structural simulation code made by Kai Kostack) which extends Blender´s basic physics functionality with a sophisticated toolset to simulate load dynamics in building structures.

Actually earthquakes can kill people even in open fields , severe earthquakes generate huge landslides
@scootermom1791
@scootermom1791 2 ай бұрын
How would they kill people in open fields? I get that if they were near trees, a tree could fall in them. Or if near water, it could flood and kill them that way. But in a flat, open field without trees or water in it?
@Dragrath1
@Dragrath1 2 ай бұрын
@@scootermom1791 In principal any form of a thrust displacement fault can kill people by generating rapid topographic differences which are highly unstable and prone of immediate collapse. This is even more likely if there is a a thick loosely consolidated sediment load as best exemplified by the near total destruction of the New Madrid quake series. Liquefaction as a whole can be very deadly and that particular quake series involved some of the most severe examples in documented history.
@scootermom1791
@scootermom1791 2 ай бұрын
@@Dragrath1I hadn't heard of that series. We are prone to liquifaction in many areas of my state. In some ways, I have feared that more than having an earthquake. The thought of the ground being able to suck you and your dwelling up into it is terrifying. That's the extreme, of course, but that's how I picture liquifaction working. Anyway, thank you for your reply! I hadn't thought about liquifaction or ground thrusts. I guess the latter could, hypothetically, throw someone off their feet in a field, which could cause a bad enough fall to kill them.

Bro, I live in the earthquake prone area, based on my observation when large magnitude quake hit, the shaking doesnt stop directly after the largest jolt arrive, the high frequency feel to be stop after the strongest jolt but closer look, the ground - building still move and sway gently by the long periode (low frequency wave). Keep it up bro gettin better time by time 🙌

@@richardthomas5362 Its possibly also depending on how you grew up. In Germany, everybody knows about Richter Scale* but barely anyone knows Intensity Scales, even though Intensity Scales are much older. On the opposite, the Shindo Scale is used in Japan to describe Earthquakes. Earthquake Early Warnings and News Reports about them always include a Intensity Map. *For large Earthquakes (M6+) the Richter Scale isn´t used anymore. For that we have (many) other Scales like the Moment Magnitude Scale. But explaining all that confusing stuff would take to long ^^.

This brings some awesome perspective into what is otherwise a _very_ subjective intensity scale. I was in the Sylmar quake of 1971 in Los Angeles, which was a 6.6, and I never attempted a guess at the intensity of shaking at my house in Long Beach at the time. _This_ demonstration would indicate that at my location it was a Mercalli scale of high-V to low VI. Worst one I'd ever been in so at the time I might've over-estimated the intensity because I had no basis for comparison. _This_ clears it up tremendously.

@EarthquakeSim: I really appreciate the effort you put into these videos. However, judging from some cam footage I observed of the M7.4 Taiwan quake on 04-03-2024, I would venture to guess that most of the shaking intensity generally did not exceed VI on the Mercalli scale. But a M7.4 quake should theoretically equate to X on the Mercalli scale according to your video. Can you please elaborate on why this may be the case? Is it because the building code / infrastructure for houses and buildings in Taiwan is stronger? What level of infrastructure does the algorithm / modeling in your simulations take into consideration? Outdated ones such as the ones in NYC or modern ones in areas like Japan? I would love to know.

It’s important to notice that magnitude is NOT direct proportional to shaking intensity. For example lower magnitude quakes like the 6.7 Northridge in 1994 generate shaking intensity IX. It really depends how the fault ruptures and your location

As a intensity 1 survivor why are you showed is actually true I actually noticed it Story: I don’t really remember, but my brother remembers in the year 2019 I was a little kid and my twin brother was in my room. It was exactly 1:05 pm the earthquake happened I actually noticed it same as my brother We actually noticed it by an empty bottle and my desk And my slippers These things shake and what what are little kids brain did we were confused thing we know 10 seconds into the earthquake small things start to move and we starting to panic we screamed our parents came in didn’t notice it but then the earthquake stopped at an around 20 seconds And that’s how much I remembered 😅

I’ve been in three 6-7+ magnitude earthquakes (Orange County and San Diego). It would be ideal to go outside, however, and a big however is that you don’t have the time and even if you did, you would trip, fall or be hit by flying debris before you made it there. Hopefully early warning system will improve this. Just remember there are dangers outside as well (especially driving cars).

wow!, total destruction!. i experienced an earthquake, once. i live in north east wales, where earthquakes are very rare, but, one morning, back in the 80s, we did get one, not a very bad one, but it did rock the house a little. i was in bed & i awoke, hearing a rumbley noise outside, & i felt myself being gently rocked from side to side like a baby in a cradle. i remember not being at all frightend & murmering " hmmm, earth tremor, must be subsidence in a mineshaft"(there was a coal mine here, long ago, & the mineshafts run under the village, so i assumed thats what it was). i would have just gone back to sleep, but i heard my mam on the landing exclaiming "oh my god, what the hell was that?!?!?, she sounded frightend, so i got up & went to assure her that i had noticed it as well, & she hadden't been dreaming & it wasen't anything paranormal. we later listend to the radio, & found out it had been felt all across north wales. people were phoneing in to the show, & describeing their experiences. one man awoke with houseplants, falling on him in bed. someone else said they thought world war 3 had started & that the russians had dropped an atom bomb!. according to seizmic reports, it had started somewhere out in the irish sea.

The power would never stay up in grade X - or even in grade IX already - let alone in upper grades. Grade IX (if not VIII) would already be enough to seriously damage the electric wiring system, so from there and up lights are bound to go dark and stay so for good (at least based on the recordings of real earthquakes I’ve seen).
