EF-4/5 tornados also leave behind ground scouring. There have been instances where a foot of soil was lifted during some particularly stronf EF5 tornadoes.

Honestly it happens. You can find quite a few videos of it being sunny around the tornado and the supercell being just off to the side. Usually though, it's hot and sunny before the storm hits, that causes more instability in the atmosphere, increasing tornado risk and strength.

This tracks with an EF1 that went through the Chicago north side in 2020. The buildings all survived, minus awnings, gutters and anything that could be ripped off. And trees weren't uprooted. But they did have large branches snapped off and some older ones were broke in half. Superficial damage to buildings, lots of branches down and a few cars turned into pancakes. Took a few days for power to come back for some people. As tornadoes go, not horrible.

One of the things that just mde me shake my head when we studied it in uni was that we alredy have options for building extrenely tornado resistant buildings, and have for a long time, yet we keep rebuilding structures proven to have extremely poor resistance and to be unsafe. Get this, these alternatives are even cheaper! This insane focus on a certain aesthetic over safety and efficiency needs to stop. If you were in an earthquake prone area you'd probably agree a more earthquake resistant building is prudent if your previous house collapsed. Why not with twisters/tornadoes?

Wow! Great illustration of how powerful these forces of nature can be, even at the lowest end of the EF scale these swirling winds of evil can still pose a potent threat. I’m a native Californian and for as long as I can remember, going back to kindergarten and elementary school, part of our curriculum was earthquake education, preparation and reaction. I’m curious and if anyone who reads this who grew up in a part of the country that is considered prone to tornadoes, did you have tornado drills in school? And did they also educate you about them (tornadoes), like what the EF ratings , etc.

Being born and raised in Oklahoma I have always just stood on the balcony or front porch watching the tornadoes until they are right on top of us. I’ve been in the center of probably 20 or more in my life and it’s honestly really fun. EF 3 and below you really don’t even have to go inside, just be somewhere that a strong wall or something is going to absorb a branch impact. EF4 and 5 you need to go to a storm cellar or a room at the center of the house as low as possible. Also for EF4 and 5 you’d better be prepared for no power, be stocked on groceries(no refrigerated items), have a full tank in case the gas stations go down. Usually never gets that bad but if it does you’ll be thankful you did

So when is the storm chasing simulator/game coming? Im not a programmer by any means, but im sure with graphics like these, mixed with radar data and a little A. I. It could happen. Rockstar games, or EA meets radar omega. The open world simulator games already have a base for roads, buildings, and vehicles. On the other hand, radar omega has plenty of recorded storm data/radar loops over basically Google maps. Shrink the maps, omit some roads, and bam. I think it's possible .
