Oh, my gosh! This is amazing!!!! I've knit about 12 pairs of socks so far, but always toe up ( provisional cast on and GSR toe and heel) using 3.25mm needles. I've just started my very first pair of cuff down socks (Kia socks actually) and am almost ready to work the first heel. I've never had to pick up and knit before and was feeling great trepidation because I don't know how to read the stitches. I watched one other video but this is beyond excellent! I didn't even know what the gusser was. Even the way you passed one stitch over the other was a revelation to me as it simplifies and cuts down on the number of things you need to do at a very fiddley part of the work. An amazing drill down into the science of sock knitting. I have a high instep, so this is beyond invaluable to me. So very many thanks for taking the time and putting so much thought into this. I'll be watching this video over and over again X

Forgot to mention I've now moved on to 2.25mm needles so it's all new to me now. You've completely removed the fear! I'm even thinking now an afterthought heel might be worth a try (in the future)

WOOHOO!!! Messages/comments like this are why I love doing these tutorial videos!! Thank you so much for watching and for your amazing comment!! Your excitement has added fuel to my fire!! I"m even more excited to get Sock Talk Pt. 2 released. There is so much information out there about sock knitting and knitting in general, tons and tons. But I was taught by the greats, by seasoned knitters who understand that once you have a solid foundation about the basics of knitting, there is nothing you can't figure out, nothing that you shouldn't be able to understand and nothing you can't change and make it do what you want it to do. You're the boss of your knitting. I"m thrilled that this video was so helpful to you. And if you have any questions please let me know...I'm truly happy to help.

Again, I love it!!!! When I changed to 2.25 it was a game changer!!! No fear, my friend, no fear...knit on!!!!! And I swear once you've done an afterthought heel you'll feel like you can climb Everest!!! Just kidding, but you'll feel pretty darn awesome!!!

You’ve just taught me that for a long time I’ve been picking up the wrong stitches along the heel flap. That may explain why the last pair I made for my daughter felt tight across her heel - I picked up stitches a couple of rows in, not right along the edge. Thank you so much! My sock knitting just improved! 💕🧦

I have been knitting socks for years. I watched this video at work mostly because it was next on my list-not because I expected to learn a lot. I normally just pick up a bunch of stitches at the top of a gusset and hope for no holes....your method of picking up the legs of the two "connecting" stitches is GENIUS! I am totally going to start doing that! I am so glad I watched this-there are always new things to learn. ☺ thanks for showing us how you make socks!☺

I FINALLY found you!! And I'm so sooo happy with it. I'm from Korea and in my culture we don't usually wear knitted socks. There is some information I need but not plenty of them. I knitted only four pairs of socks so far and I think this is the time that I want to try some different kinds of socks but there's not enough posts or videos in Korean unfortunately. I found you here, your tutorials are so kind and I love the detail things you explain. I love your way of talking and sound of your laughter so much. I bought your pattern and found out even the pattern was written perfect to understand. In fact, I'm gonna buy some needles to try the specific way you knit, cuz I only used magic-loop method so far. Thanks for all your efforts to make so good videos that I like. And I hope my not-so-good English make you uncomfortable. If there's one that's not what I mean to say. I just like and love your work. Thanks again for these good things. :)

Hi. Just watched your Class 4 on heel flap and gusset. I've been using this method for a few years and understood everything you taught. However, I was able to pick up some pointers on closing the holes and placing of markers which was also helpful. Thank you for your patience and doing real time as it is very helpful. And yes, it was a difficult thing to teach and "scary" sort of, but necessary and very helpful. What I want to say is that I felt you did well in how you presented this teaching ......probably harder for you to remember all the "ins and outs" than for us as students to follow and do it. Thank you for your patience and joy in teaching. Barbara Smith

Thanks so much for all your tips! I’ve always knitted toe up socks (2 at a time to keep them the same) with a gusset heel. But I wanted to watch your video about top down to get a better idea of the heel pickup stitches w/o holes on which you helped tremendously. I am a little confused though about you mentioning there were no US size equivalents for 2.25 mm and 2.75 mm needles and calling your 2.0 mm a US 1. All my 2.25 mm say US 1, my 2.50 say US 1.5, my 2.75 say US 2, 3 mm is US 2.5. These are ChiaoGoo and Knitter’s Pride which I believe to be pretty popular brands. I mention this in case it might help someone looking at these brands. Thanks again for putting these videos together!

Thank you for the information and demonstration, always good to see the instructions in motion. Also a reminder before doing the heel you could put in a Safety Line. When I was learning the Fish Lips Kiss heel it took me 3 tries to get it and the Safety Line saved my hard work and reduced my stress level. Even though I have done a few since, I always put one in (Safety Line) just in case I have to stop for a day or so before I can finish.

Thank tou for a very informative video. Regarding measuring versus counting, I often do both because only counting requires my gauge to stay the same. My gauge changes with emotions, weather, situation etc. therefore I do not trust my knitting to be of similar length if I knit at different times and only count, therefore I do both.

HI Denise! Thank you for these great sock knitting tutorials! I have a question regarding those extra picked up stitches when knitting the gusset. It seems that is ok to pick up more than the pattern calls for-more than the exact number of slipped stitches from the heal flap in order to avoid that dreaded hole. When we continue knitting the sock, how do we account for those extra stitches? Do we eventually need to get back to the original amount of called for stitches? If yes, how do we accomplish that? Decreasing? If you have covered this in another video, please just point me to that so you don’t have to re-explain. Thank you!

Hello! I don't understand English, only text with google translate. I saw a carved sole in my hands. And it seems to me that this is what I'm looking for and trying to figure out. I want to know when the instep wedge starts, at any length of the foot. I even looked at medical websites. But I couldn't find the answer. I am planning to knit for charity and it is very important for me that the socks are correct. If, what you are talking about is free, could you give me a link so i can read? Thank you!

Hi Genova, The instep wedge is created as the gusset decreases are knit. It will obviously vary from foot to foot but in general starts just past the ankle and slope on the bottom of the foot. There is no one set of numbers to go by since everyone's foot is different. The instructions in sock patterns give you estimates so the socks will fit feet of vary sizes, usually small 5-6 (US), medium 7-8 (US) and Large (9-10). The length can be adjusted but knitting the socks longer or shorter according to need. I hope this has helped answer your questions. Free patterns can be found on Ravelry and or other sources.

Hi Beverley, One of the best tutorials I've seen for knitting socks two at a time is by Mina Philip, The Knitting Expat. I hope it's what you are looking for! Here is a link to her video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6SXc3t4rrd7oqs

Hello again! I have a question. How can I customize for a high instep? I've now got the fish lips kiss sock heel and will digest over the next few days but it doesn't cover this issue. I knitted my last pair of socks using sock yarn and 3.25mm needles and 72 stitches toe up (GSR heel and toe). The instep is a bit neat so wondering how I can accommodate for that now that I'm using 2.25mm needles (also 72 stitches. 8 stitches per inch). For example, the broadest parts of my foot are both 10" (around ball and ankle) but I've just measured my instep (around end of heel and highest part of instep) and it's 14". Not expecting you to do the math for me, but should I knit a longer heel flap? Or knit the heel flap using more than half the stitches? Should I have increased the stitch count? ( although I can tell the sock is perfect for width from cuff to heel). Can't quite get my head around this. Any advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Question regarding heel flap. First row you have “sl1 purlwise *(k1, sl 1 knitwise ) repeat to end of row. The slip 1 knitwise twists the stitch therefore 0n 2nd row do you purl the twisted stitch or reorient to untwisted?. What is the purpose of twisting the purl? This different from other sock patterns.
@EarthtonesgirlPodcast
@EarthtonesgirlPodcast 4 жыл бұрын
The reason for the twisted stitch is to reinforce a "stress" point/area in your sock. Twisted stitches are stronger than non-twisted stitches. And because the base of the stitch is twisted there is far less chance of getting a hole. I learned that trick from a sock designer many years ago.

I have watched or I should say tried to watch…. At least 4 different segments of this lady and her knitting….. I’m more of a beginner knitter…… I have never once got to the actual instructions…. I get to board with all the useless chatter….. she likes to talk… talk … talk….. time is precious…. I can’t set thru this lady’s instructions.

I think you mentioned before that you use your phone to record your podcast videos...where do you place the camera when you're showing the actual knitting? I really appreciate that it's straight-on, so that we can see exactly what you're doing.

Hi Evelien, Usual the heel starts when you have completed the leg of the sock. Most sock patterns will give the exact or approximate length.

@EarthtonesgirlPodcast

Yes, you definitely can use man made fibers. There are many wonderful fingering weight acrylic yarns on the market at many of the major craft stores, like Michaels, Joann's , Hobby Lobby, etc...

I’m so sorry, I wasn’t paying attention and should’ve realize by your name that you are overseas. Are there any large commercial hobby stores in the UK? They might carry some acrylic sock yarn. Or you may be able to order some via Amazon UK.

Yes you can use a size 2 needle to start. Just keep in mind that your gauge will be different because it is a larger needle.
