WOW! I just found you day as I was looking for tutorials on how to do afterthought heels. After watching this video and learning so much, I had to go watch some earlier videos. I found out I just missed a KAL for shorty socks. You are an amazing teacher and so friendly. I now feel like I can knit a pair of socks that will fit. I knit a pair about 5 years ago that are so big they fall off my feet when I wear them to bed to keep my feet warm. Knitting a pair of socks that I can wear is a goal I have for this year.

Thank you so much for all of the time you have put into these tutorials! Hearts and hugs to you from Fern in Minnesota! If you put your waste yarn only in the center 30 stitches and knit the one on either end with your regular yarn like you did the other side of the sock, and then still pick up the full 32 top and bottom, it will be closer to the Kirby Wirby technique and not give you holes, and you don't have to pick up Edge stitches.

@pjd2709

Just a hint, for picking up heel stitches, use one or two sizes smaller (DPN's are good for this) than used for the main socks! That way the sts are a lot easier to pick up and you don't get that buldge as when using the same size as was knitted. You can leave them on the smaller needles, as when knitting back across the row, you will use your original sized needles as used for knitting the main sock.....!

I am finishing the second sock of a pair with afterthought heels and a gusset. The gusset is pretty small. Hello Denise. This is my second video of yours that I'm watching. It's so nice to see your lovely face. I am currently knitting a set of "fore-thought" socks. so with the waste yarn method, couldn't one just go in with the waste yarn 2 sts on each end and it would come out the same as the "cutting" method? Just when putting the knitting needle in above and below the waste yarn, go 2 sts on either side before taking the waste yarn out???? Thanks for your help and generosity in showing this. I have not viewed Part 1 of your Sock Talk videos yet. but will before I make a sock. I have arthritis in my ankles and there for that area is quite thick. So I hope to find some method that works. I would hope the "after thought" would work since I like how it works. Any thoughts on this for my situation? Thanks again.

Using Instagram is a very individual experience I find a lot of inspiration there, tons of it actually. I wouldn’t use the word precious to describe Instagram. It is a social media platform that has good and bad to it. I follow accounts that inspire me whether that’s with knitting or sewing. I follow a lot of yarn dyers so that I know when certain things are going on sale or will be available. And I follow what fiber friends are up to. Including events, festival, celebrations, etc. KZbin is a great source for learning the basic ins and outs and the functionality of Instagram. And then it’s just having fun going down the rabbit hole and finding accounts that you like.

Yes, you can knit the shadow wrap heel as an afterthought heel. You just have more stitches to graft at the end.

41:35 Hmm.. I'm thinking the waste yarn can be knitted across using a DPN so there'll be no need to transfer the stitches after.

Hi I'm doing an advent skein this year and it seems if you cut in instead of putting waste yarn in, you lose a row of color. Also is there a way to do the shadow wrap heel as an afterthought heel
@EarthtonesgirlPodcast
@EarthtonesgirlPodcast Жыл бұрын
Hi Teresa, Yes, you do lose a row of color. So putting in waste yarn might work better for me. I prefer the thrill of cutting and it's works out a bit neater for me. That is the fun of knitting, having lots of options. Yes, you can knit the shadow wrap heel as an afterthought, you just have to graft the stitches.

I started knitting at the age of 7. I'm now 58 and have been terrified of trying socks for long enough. I have great concern about cutting my knitting and picking up those stitches. Could I hold the stitches on a holder or cast off and cast on the next row to have an opening to knit the heel in to? I know there'd be a seam, but it's inside a shoe and non-knitters wouldn't know the difference. Thank you for any advice.

Believe me my friend, I completely understand that fear of cutting your knitting! Yes, you can do either of the techniques you mentioned by keep in mind your “corners/edges” may not be as neat as you may want them. I encourage whatever makes you comfortable and gets the socks in your feet!!!

Hi Kay, I'm sorry to hear that you are struggling. Most patterns do explain how to knit the heel decreases. They are the same as standard wedge toe decreases. Once you've picked up all the stitches, knit one or two plains rounds, more if you want to the heel to be a bit deeper and then start decreasing. Knit 1, SSK, to the 3 stitches before the end, k2tog, K1, repeat on the other needle.(if using 2 circs or magic loop) Knit one plain round. Repeat these two rounds until you are down to approximately 10 to 12 stitches. Then do the kitchener stitch or Finchley graft. Hope that helps...if you need more help let me know.

@@EarthtonesgirlPodcast Thanks very much for taking the time to explain for me. I've become a visual learner watching youtube, and the demos I saw that day sped through and frustrated me. I don't like reading patterns so I memorize the techniques. I am happy to hear from you and let you know that I am now one heel and one toe away fron finishing my first pair of hand knit socks! Keep up your good work and stay well.

These are great tutorials! I have knit lots of toe up socks with afterthought heels, however, I typically do not use self striping yarn. Any suggestions of how to keep my eye from jumping to the wrong row when picking up stitches? I prefer not using waste yarn but I have a hard time staying on the same row when not using waste yarn. Hope this makes sense.

Great tutorial, Denise! I greatly admire how you share information about other designers and ongoing KALs. I love striped socks, but have a high instep. Afterthought, fish lips kiss, and cut in heels do not fit as well as socks with gussets. Do you have any advice or thoughts on how to preserve the integrity of the stripes around the heel area AND have a great fitting sock for a high instep? Thanks, FrettyBetty

True afterthought heels are when you cut your knitting to put in your heel. Forethought heels are when you put in a line of waste yarn into your knitting that will be cut to make room for the heel.

Hi Denise once again brilliant tutorial I was just wondering if you did the forethought heel but didn’t put waste yarn in the first two and last two stitches but still picked the left leg of the stitches above and below them would that give you the same result without holes as the afterthought heel? Also have you seen the KZbin video by Andrea Mowrey about putting lifelines above and below the waste yarn to make picking up easier

Thank you for the information on the extra rows before starting the decrease rounds - I have an instep so high that my foot is almost like a brick [as high as it is long as it is wide - yes I have an EEE width - sigh] so even a few extra rows than you recommend could allow me to try the afterthought heel - they have always been way too tight across my instep.
