Julio Cesar Seems to be based on the Genesis version instead. This is what you buy on Steam and GOG.

Even better, there is a special edition version for DOS. I played it. Has the extra stages and the high quality sound, but but buttvilles music is flipped.

It even has the same background of the SNES version when you fight against Evil the cat, instead of the pitch black background of the other versions.

I've beaten this particular version of Earthworm Jim a million times (even on hard difficulty), and this is the first time I saw the 'who turned off the lights' stage. My whole childhood is a lie... :'(

While the graphics are a step up from the original, there were a few flaws. -when you die, the music from the level still plays, making it not really as smooth in the audio. -some of the sound effects are very hard to hear, or don’t exist at all. -Jim feels a lot faster, and heavier, making him feel a bit harder to control. -the animations are a bit faster, making it feel a bit disorienting if you played the other versions. -If you look a bit closer, over on the left of some stages, the screen sometimes shifts and glitches a little bit. -The game just doesn't feel as polished as others.

As the story goes Sega asked at the last minute for Shiny to add a bonus level for the Genesis at the last minute. This was the game as planned and Sega negotiated a bonus stage so nothing is missing per say

This appears to be one of the few versions (the other being EWJ HD) where you can destroy the last boss (queen slug-for-a-butt) with a single hit of the whip. I wonder if it's a bug or intentional.

iirc this is possible in the Gen/MDrive version as well (and possibly the SNES port too?) but it's a frame-perfect trick and therefore REALLY hard to pull off. I know this because all the tool-assisted runs do it and a runner at a GDQ event attempted it during his Genesis run and explained it's awesome when you pull it off, but not very reliable. I wonder if the timing window is a few frames longer in all of the Special Edition ports (Sega CD, DOS, EWJ HD, etc)

Having played the PS3 HD version, I have to say that the DOS and Windows 95/98 versions look much better (paradoxically). There's something unnatural and over processed about the HD version. I don't think it's the format that's to blame but how it was converted... Something like how much of the details in the Bluray remaster of Disney's Cinderella (the original animated version) were lost when they tried too hard to remove the grain which removed a lot of the line art in the process.
