Q about a weird addiction; many of us have been addicted to the Darrell Brooks trial, watching it ages after it finished. I cant figure out why its so addictive, the man representing himself was the most annoying person alive, also rude, obnoxious and relentless. What is it about that trial that gets people obsessively hooked?

Hi Mayim! I am wondering if you know whether different styles of meditation have a different effect on the brain, e.g. mantra. concentration, compassion, mindfulness meditation? Big fan, thanks for all you do!!!

Hello, my question is quite intricate. I search for help to get a naive woman which is a celebrity out of her self-abuse marriage. So my question is would you look up Kat Dennings and tell me what you think about her story. The first to check would be the story of her engagement, which is cringe and will tell how naive she is. ( i am fully aware of that i sound like an insane and delusional fan and to be honest i kinda wish i would be.)

A long time ago, during EMT training, a Physician came to talk to us. He explained how if you hit the front of your head hard, it is possible for the lining in the skull to pull away, and fluid can build up - this may show on the opposite side of the injury, and may not show up until days after. An aquaintance had been in a car accident and she hit her head. Other person was worse off and ambulance only took that person. She went to ER, was given kist of things to watch out for for head ijury. Her vision went wonky, back to ER, they told her it was her eyes, not her head. Went to eye dr - eyes fine. Within a couple weeks she had died from her head seemingly benign head injury. So - trust your instincts and better safe than sorry in getting checked out.

I had had trauma as a child and fractured my skull and was in a coma for 11 days. Growing up I was told I was lazy and stupid. The frustration and embarrassment I felt in school made any confidence plummet. I believe I have ADD, but I'm not taken seriously. The anxiety is real.

I had severe hypoxia, resulting in damage to motor cortex and short term memories of the brain, I learned to create new pathways to walk again but memory centre still isn't great but it is better. But with that said most don't learn how to walk and talk again. In your case most don't come out of a coma and those who do often don't have the ability to function independently. You are awesome and smarter than the rest. I say smarter than the rest based on statistics on traumatic brain injuries on children, majority of your teachers and class mates would not do as well as you with same brain injury. Give yourself a high five every day for overcoming so many obstacles.

@JenniferJane78 you don't know what your words mean to me. It is in such contrast to what I'm usually told. Thank you. And to add to the mix, I've been living with double vision since the head trauma because there was nerve and muscle damage to my eye. Focusing and confusion is my daily constant. And not that I'm much older, with all the physical, mental, and visual changes, it's been a challenge.

Enjoy these podcasts immensely. While observing a brain surgery (student nurse @ 43), attending surgeon commented that the brain was the consistency of firm pudding. Tofu reference wasn’t in the picture 30 years ago in rural Georgia. He pointed out that the thin “wet thread” he was working on was actually a nerve. Studying the body is like being on a Magical Mystery Tour, which will now be my ear worm for the day. Thanks for posting!

16:50 when we had fire drills at work, it was my worst nightmare! I had to hold my fingers HARD against my ears, which is also probably not good, but I have epilepsy and our fire alarms also have the slow bright LED flash. The flashing lights don't induce seizures for me but the combination of the sound from the fire drill is sensory overload. Glad I work from home now. Love you so much since I found Blossum as a young 14 year old trumpeter myself then later branched out to French horn. Hearing those close notes musically most likely contributes.

My dad had a strange incident from a tackle at practice, leading to brain surgery in '69 at 16 years old. He's currently 71 and had lost all senses but touch. The surgery left him with double vision, his hearing went slowly starting at 37. No smell, so can't really taste. He has a hard time eating. He remembered maybe 15 years ago that he hit is head hard at football practice a few days before the "mini" stroke. He felt shook but the coach didn't do anything as he just said it "burned" inside his head but was otherwise okay until 3 days later. HIs balance is so bad now he can barely do much but walk holding onto walls. He's gone through so much and is angry that a tackle affected his life and definitely retirement. He can't golf and is embarrassed by his immobility. His mental cognition is failing now too. We have dementia in our family history but no one was affected as young as my dad. The helmets and protective gear are certainly better now, but one hard blow to the head or neck can be damaging in ways that don't show up for years. Incredibly risky. Thank you for this episode!

That’s an interesting label for - and interpretation of - songs that play over and over. As a composer and strong intuitive, I’ve found that repeating songs can relate to a variety of things: (1) a song from a show that I binge-watched the day before; (2) a new song that I need to write down; (3) a song that relates to a question I asked myself, heard in a dream or conversation, or even prayed about the day before (ie, it gives an answer or the key to an answer); or (4) an event or situation that occurred later in the day. I believe that God/Spirit speaks through my heart and that even spiritual guidance comes through a cultural and/or personal filter. Hence: a song to which I attach a certain meaning or message. It’s also possible that my subconscious mind is trying to capture my attention - again, with a message or an answer to a question. As far as precognitive messages go, I’ve had them pop up in art, only to see them unexpectedly mirrored in a situation I definitely wouldn’t have predicted or wanted, when I created the art (sometimes years before). Like any other experience, I wouldn’t recommend immediately assuming every song that pops in your head is a message from a higher power. Maybe, you just like the song.

In the winter of 1969 I dreamed an 8-sided Stones album called "Brighton Blues." When I woke up I could remember part of one song for about 20 minutes but didn't have an opportunity to record it (cell phones not yet being a Thing) and so I forgot it -- unfortunately, because it was pretty good. In the next year or three, the Stones put out a retrospective album in an octagonal jacket, and a new album called "Black and Blue."

I have Shaken Baby Syndrome and was shook and passed out 3 times as an infant according to my Mother. Father only knew about 2 of those times. I used to be MENSA I think because I officially test at 112 IQ but never could overcome the randomness my brain works, and my Father is smart and has a MS in Mathematics. I am on disability but my brother thinks I am a liar and faking it. My parents both gaslight me, and now he is. I was so "lazy" according to my brother, when I told him I was let go from every job I ever had. I tried to heal my randomness by drilling Sudoku 9x9's on an ipad. It didn't work. I got better at solving them, but I still push random numbers. I am not fast at solving them either and still struggle with Diabolical or extra hard puzzles. I tend to be more animated. My brother says if he starved me and banned me from food and water, and make me homeless, I'd learn how to focus! It is not a focus problem. It is a randomness problem. The Master level sociology comment I made in Freshman Sociology class (my area of savantness) I got wrong on the midquarter while I was trying to pull straight A's! I ended up graduating missing honors by 1 point. I was extremely upset. Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy I could never afford because the evil government stole the money that would have gone into my Special Needs Trust account. My mother was shook only once and that shaking was stopped right away, according to what her mother told her. My mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's at 72.

Thank you for talking about SPD. My son was diagnosed at 2 1/2 and my SPD bible is “Raising a Sensory Smart Child” by Lindsey Biel and Nancy Peske. It’s a fantastic book that really saved my bacon.

Earworms perform a very important function - they clear out unproductive streams of thought. Earworms get rid of 'cognitive constipation'.

The earworm title reminds me of the episode where Sheldon couldn't stop thinking about a song and got back together with Amy in season 9! Sheldon and Amy are the best fictional couple ever created! I can't wait to see you again as Amy in Young Sheldon!

Earworms? Sheldon’s! Earworm Reverberation’s “Darling”..& your magnificent Amy! I’ve my own earworms too. Today’s was one of my ‘first fav’ Cohen’s (sorry Jonathan, silver medal goes for you) “Alexandra Leaving”.. On a more serious mode, as an example of what you’ve explained at today’s episode: my mother developed a rare dementia called “Reduplicative Paramnesia” due to a serious inner brain’s injury suffered 20 years before her first dementia’s symptom. She died delusionally believing that her flat had been duplicated, or that it existed in two spaces simultaneously. Kind of “quantic” mental sickness btw!

So often science arrives after human experience. 20 years ago an old man from my neighborhood happened to be the world champion in boxing from back in the day (I think 70's) and although he was friendly and decent - the type of guy that aged well, was fit and was always well dressed (he also carried his training kit 24/7), he was totally "nuts". There was another known guy that used to be a famous wrestler and was constantly talking loudly to no one, would get enraged out of nowhere and snapped at random people and was ultimately taken by force to an asylum. I also had a good friend that lived on my block that one day had fallen from the top of the football stadium stairs and the head injury was such that fell into a coma for a decade and a half. When he came back he was always emotionally disregulated, depressed, anxious, would make things up all the time, and would easily get violent with whoever he felt like at that moment. So to all of us - the whole town knew these guys, it was a small town - seemed obvious that hitting your head was a huge contributor to mental illnesses. We didn't need a lab or science to tell us.

How do you grow up without ANY brain injury? Every kid hits their head all the time. How can they prove or disprove this connection? On a way shallower level: I LOVE your hair today!

I wasn't breastfed by my Mom for long. Or for the standard time for the beginning of my childhood. I was introduced to the idea of breastfeeding but, I refused the idea immediately. Even though I was born with teeth. I rejected the breastfeeding introduction / bonding time. I did attempt to naturally attempt to breastfeed from my Father and Mother.. realistically. Lol.. or not.. fact .. it happened. I bonded with my mother and father and so forth naturally.

@MayimBialik @JonathanCohen @BialikBreakdown Please invite Kathy Garver of Family Affair (1966-1971) tv sitcom fame! Was sitcom even a term used back then 🤔 The tv show was before your time, but is a beloved favorite of many. I just binged the entire series on @Hulu. It aired at such a crossroads in American culture. They chose not to address anything politically going on at that time, instead opting for good feeling, innocent family tv. They barely touched the hippie movement in one episode putting the focus on Cissy (Kathy Garver's character) wanting to wear "mod clothes" as opposed to proper young lady clothing. I'm sure she a lot to say. For those of us who loved Family Affair, who didn't want an Uncle Bill & Mr. French?! This show still brings me comfort ❤ P.S. Uncle Bill's Manhattan 4,150 sq.ft. apartment would rent for $85,000-$95,000 PER MONTH in today's market!!! 😮

I cannot comprehend how 50% of our population doesn’t have inner dialogue. Their minds are quiet. I understand they have to read and speak out loud to memorize things. How do these brains function? I can’t imagine not having a tune in my head and so many other things. Ever debate a best plan of action (escaping danger) without writing or saying it? Thanks

Excellent advice about not allowing a therapist to cross a personal boundary. A therapist is irresponsible who does that. Some therapists exploit their clients who tend to be co-dependent. Sorry, therapists, but it is client abuse. I like that Mayim is traditional about important matters.

Wow this is the first time i heard someone explain the feeling i get with sounds. I get agitation throughout my body when i hear two sounds at once and anger. I cant focus if i hear sounds outside my room and its to much. So people playing music, yelling, etc. i cant. I cant do textures of certain foods. And my husband says im autistic because i know all the feelings of my clothes. I can stick my hand in a basket of clothes and know what im feeling as i like how certain clothes feel vs some others and he thinks thats crazy. Im 26 and its been hard as no one understands.

When I hear or see a movie when a person gets hit or something breaks I get a jolt of pain. It’s like static electricity. Same thing when I see people get hurt or see someone’s surgery or any type of sores. But I stay quiet about it.
